- Baba Muhammad Hanif lives in Ghang village near Sheikhupur district of Punjab, Pakistan. He had been working here as a teacher, so he is called Master Muhammad Hanif.
He recalls the prepartition days spent in his native village Sujanpur near Pathankot, India. Sujanpur was a big village situated two miles away from Pathankot. Upper Bari Doab canal passed through Sujanpur and flowed to Lahore in those days. Its origin was Madopur head. Baba M. Hanif stills misses his childhood days he spent with his hindu friends at bank of canal where they used to eat mangoes.
He was in 9th class when partition of India happened. His school name was DB Model High School Sujanpur. The names of all 19 classfellows of 9th class are still fresh in his memory. One of them was Santosh Kumari, whose father treated M. Hanif like his own son. Santosh Kumari also wrote letters to M. Hanif for two years after partition.
M. Hanif stills remembers the subjects and teachers of his school.
He says that all muslims, hindus and sikhs were leading a peaceful life in Sujanpur. They were like brothers. Sikhs and hindus of Sujanpur did not harm them when they had to flee.
116 members of his family left Sujanpur and reached Gurdaspur in evening. Their buses were surrounded by sikh mob. A sikh officer of finance department, his sons and wife Kuldeep Kaur brought out guns to defend the muslims. The sikh family saved their lives. They called police and military to escort us uptill Lahore.
Baba saw trains filled with deadbodies.
His story is full of pains of separation, migration, killings, loss and much more.

This is my ancestral village and we are a Chechi Gujjar family. My great grandfather (b. 1898) was a land surveyor (patwari) of British India and my grandfather (b. 1918) was in the Royal Indian Airforce. I would like to have the contact of this uncle. My grandmothers grew up in batala and their father was in the police and they were in school in 1930s. Their naana was Imam e masjid Batala. So we are a pure Gurdaspur family. After coming to Pakistan some settled in Rawalpindi and later Islamabad F6/3. My naanka are Choudhary family called Ferozpuria of Ghazi minaara village and Sheikhupura.

My mother belongs to sujanpur.il was a CITY not "pind".her caravan was attacked by sikhs. she received injuries by hand grenade thrown by Sikhs many of her relatives were killed by sikh attackers.this baba ji is lucky to survived.

I spoke with him and his son yesterday. And he was the class fellow of my grandfather’s (Ch Ramzan) younger brother called Farman. He remembered my Great grandfather Fazal Din who was the patwari. They lived in Choudhary mohalla in Sujaanpur.

Salute to Babaji memories. All the villages named by Babaji are still exist with same name. Language and culture is somewhat same, many words used today are similar to Babaji addressed. Babaji gate and hospital still exist.
