Part 2 was a perfect mirror piece to the first one, and closed out just about all loose plot elements from the first one perfectly. This is one of the few times I'm disappointed to hear about a sequel to a great movie. No idea what else they'd explore at this point
I think an easy conceit for the film would be to lean even heavier on the idea of drones taking over BUT THEN there's a situation where skilled IRL pilots are needed to save the day. I could even see them using the younger pilots to train AI drones which then get taken over and then they need MAVERICK to step in. Of course, this does skew awfully close to the last MI film.
To be fair, we also used to say Top Gun 2 was not necessary. And it wasn't from a "Universe" or "Canon" perspective, but they just did the most exciting movie they could and it worked. But if the same people that made Maverick awesome are working on this, maybe this one is worth it too

But if there had to be another story with these characters, There’s always the story of whatever happened to Cougar from the beginning of the original Top Gun? He got scared, Maverick had to guide him down, and then he stepped down. What’s the story of the pilot who never makes it off the ground, and do they ever recover that drive. Having Maverick see a pilot who’s as old as he is, but spent a lifetime afraid of his dream, and seeing if he can go for it this late in life, could be interesting. There’s also the fact that Rooster is now older than Goose ever was, and likely is going to have a family of his own. Maverick seeing his best friend’s son reaching middle age, and settling down, having to confront why he still hasn’t. That question of why he’s still a captain after all this time, and how it’s “one of life’s great mysteries.” One great thing about the 2nd film, was that it didn’t follow the legacy sequel formula of the hero now being depressed and out of action. Maverick is still very much in action, despite his age. But I think there’s a way to maintain the dignity of characters, while confronting them with human problems. As healthy as Maverick is, what happens when he’s told he isn’t allowed to fly, or a health issue causes him to be a liability?

The other incorrect statement John said was that Maverick should retire from the Air Force…WRONG! Maverick is a Naval Aviator in the U.S. Navy. TOP GUN is a Naval Aviation Fighter School run and operated by the U.S. Navy. Lastly, John mention that Maverick talked to a general (the scene where Maverick was in the office talking to a “general” during the first part of the movie) He was talking to an Admiral. The rank of General belongs to the Army, Marine Corps, and the Air Force. The rank of Admiral is in the Navy and the Coast Guard. Enough said…🤨
A top gun 3 with Rooster and Hangman as the main pilots on some funky new mission with Mav just being support/teacher. The whole point of "TOP GUN" is that it's a school where you learn things. Besides, the 2nd movie took the whole drone thing a bit too far. The military isn't anywhere close to being fully drone only. Hell, the new fighter in the works is meant to be flown by a pilot with drone wingmen but you'll still have a human there calling the shots. Hell, why not have the 3rd movie be about competing next-gen fighters with Rooster and Hangman as test pilots with Mav running the program?
My idea is the US switches to all drones, but then the US satellite system is taken out in a cyberattack. Only old style aircraft that have been mothballed still work, so they have to call up Maverick again because he's one of the only people who are still experts at aerial dogfights.
Interesting how Paramount announced this just as Tom Cruise moved to WB. I don't believe for a second this is happening, but if it does it will likely be without Tom Cruise as he waited friggin years before doing Maverick. And the release doesn't even confirm TC is connected to it.

Now, only a couple years later it won’t have that weight and gravity like Maverick had. It just could feel like a cash grab instead of telling a worthwhile story is all.

I'm not sure how they could do a part 3. didn't look like there were any pieces you could use for that. for the drone thing, I feel like I kind of remember there being some kind of fighter pilots vs a drone ship movie. I think it was called Stealth. Mind you that was a little more sci-fi and out there. I don't know how that movie did. 100% TG3 is not being made. Firstly he's to old now. He was 56 when he was making Maverick. He turns 62 this year. His body simply won't be able to sustain the fierce G Forces of being in the plane again. Secondly he's not going to risk making a movie that underperforms and dampens his legacy of Topgun. MI7 underperformed nearly $230m below MI6 and $120m below MI5. Thirdly it's not believable that a man in his 60's would be the Navy's 'go to' pilot considering the amount of pilots they have available (if that was the assumed story). Unfortunately he's looking his age now and its simply not realistic he would be the main pilot. There's no story we want to see him part of other than a pilot. It would be underwhelming to have him play a character like Viper. Because THAT was Topgun '86. Tom Skerritt was 50 in Topgun - that was believable. Fourthly if it's so CONFIRMED then where is all the official confirmation from the stars on their social channels? Fifthly this rumour is perfect timing from Paramount after the announcement of Warners. Every business wants headlines and stories written about them. @@clarkjosephkent2876 just watched it and they say an Iranians nuclear enrichment plant it's at the briefing mav has with the two admirals near the beginning of the film. 1.26.58 in the film just checked they do mention Iran but it's a brief mention and they don't mention it again but it's quite explicit.
