    Just sitting down after finishing mine. Very good video. All the tools I needed. I was happy to find your video as mine is the same plumbing. I recognized the shower diverter valve in the middle. I'm paranoid doing plumbing on this old house. Snapped the head of the Philips screw off the knob. Knob came off OK. (Better than stripping the head and not getting the knob off lol). Valve came out easy, 19 mil. deep socket just like you said. But then I could not get the slotted screw off at the washer end no matter what. It was welded in. Took the whole valve over to Canadian Tire and they had the WALTEC cartridge non- oem #76101 for 8 bucks. It said cold side but was the same as my hot side. I think that might mean if you have the handle style of knob and they turn off in opposite directions. Nice to have this finally fixed. Thanks LUCAM.

      You would need to see if there is a main shut off valve for your unit.
      Do you have your own hot water tank etc? Or is it shared. If you have your own there may be a shut off by the tank or where the water pipes enter the unit.
      Depending how the place is built it may have only a single shut off valve or one to each unit.
      Would need to sort that scenario out.
      If only one shut off exsists;
      Prolly need to make arrangements to do repairs.
      I would consult with your landlord before doing any repairs, if you were to make a mistake and the issue becomes bigger it could be your responsibility to pay any further situations.

    So what would happen if I did this without turning the water off? Because I don't have access to that, the controls for the water are in my neighbours unit and they're extremely difficult people who go out of their way to give me a hard time so I don't think they'll shut if off for me if I ask. Would it be okay if I did it really fast or is that a bad idea no matter what?

      I am thinking you are correct but I and not sure 100% how it comes apart as I never done one before. If you are in an apartment shouldn't the land Lord cover the repair? If you were to do something and cause more damage it may come back on you. It may be a simple fix or may be a mess. I don't know. Best to be safe if you are a renter and have the landlord have his repair guy repair it.

    I have changed the stem on the showr. Then the one for the cold water. I had to special order the diverter becaue it was so old. Then I replaced the stem for the cold water. Everything seemed all good at first but for the past week or so the cold water has startd leaking. The cold water stem is a newer version so Im thinking I might need to special oder that one, too. Might as well get 1 for the hot water while Im at it. Can you tell me what the differecne is between Delco 3S-8H/C and a 3S-9H/C? IDK if one is bigger round than the other or if one is a bit longer than the other? Im not a plummer kind of person and learning as I go!! I should note that when I put the diverter in I couldnt get it to go all the way in but when I put the chrome thing on that goes over the extention part it held it in place and worked like it should. Only problem is its really hard to turn it from the tub to the shower head! The parts they used look like the parts you use for the bathroom sink not the long pieces I see fo the bathtub that everyone else uses!! Then "whoever" put this thing on in the first place dome a half as job IMO and didnt use the correct parts ! Just used what they had on hand. Its to hard to get into where all the parts are at to just replace the whole thing with a whole new thing and correct parts or I would just do that! You can only get to it from the back side and it is in such a small space it cant be accessed from either side without removing some of the wall!!
    Thank you for your time!!
    Sincerely,
    Fabo Lee, Sr.

      Hey not to sure what the difference is between the two parts for Delco 8h & 9h. Check discriptions or look at the differences of the 2 parts in hand.
      Sounds as it might be installed a bit to tight for the bath to shower option? Not sure. I'm not a full out plumber. Just know a few things when seeing a problem.

      @@LUCAMTire I figured out what the problem was, the little black rubber piece that went into the back tore so I replaced it AGAIN. Seems to be working for now. But those 2 parts look almost identical to me in hand. I think the 1 I need needs to be about 1/8 of an ince shorter than the 1 I have. Its a really tight fit when you put the chrome sleeve back on it. Im using new parts on an old system because they dont carry the parts I need at lowes. They are that old.
      I just wonder if there is a difference between the stems with the 2 small holes in the back or bottom and the ones with the moon crescent in the same spot or place. I would think as long as the flat part covers the whole hole where the water comes in through that little black rubber piece that has the little spring behind it so it stays flush with the flat part when you turn the water off. Thats what the flat part is for and the holes or cresent allows the water to flow. Im learning as I go.

    I have the exact same set up as in this video, and my hot water is leaking badly. I'll be using this video to guide me. I have 2 questions tho. I'm wondering the size of the rubber washer you replaced. On the Canadian Tire website, they list sizes of their outer diameter, while in your video, you listed 1/4 inch, I assume was inner diameter. So I'm confused, lol. And secondly, I am in mobile home, and although I can access my hot water tank to kill the water, I have no idea where the main water shut off is, nor if I can even access it. Is shutting off the water at the hot water tank enough, and if not, why is that?

    • @LUCAMTire
      @LUCAMTire  3 роки тому

      If you are on a well you can shut your well pump off which is normally a stand alone box at the water entry of the home. You should also have a shut off valve. It is a old valve turn with caution as they tend to fail being old. You want to shut the pressure off. I shut my hot water tank off as I did not know how long I would be working on the system and didn't want the hot water coils to burn up incase the water was to bleed off from the tank.
      You want to shut off the water pump or main line coming into the home or when you take the tap apart and water will start coming out at you if you remove the valve and the water is not shut off as there is pressure behind the tap valve. 🤣
      I bought a little kit that came with an assortment of sizes and just matched up what I needed. Inside or outside diameter I am not sure. It was either a 3/8 or 1/4 inch rubber I used. When putting things together with new rubber. If remember correctly I needed to have the tap open so it didn't prematurely crush and tare the new rubber. If the tap valve was closed and you wrenched in the valve it would put to much pressure on the rubber and would tare it.

      Thanks for replying. No, I'm not on a well, but I've since located the main shut off. Now, burning out the heater coils in my tank was not something I had considered, as I'm very unfamiliar with hot water tanks, so thanks for that 'heads up' as well. My hot water tank is actually located immediately behind the wall where my tub taps/faucet are situated, so I'd imagine any space between the tank-to-taps is very limited, and the chance of there being any shut off valve right there where I could really use one, would be even less likely. So I'm going to kill power to the water tank at the breaker, to avoid any damage to the coils. Then I guess shut off the main water feed, and if there's an accessible shut off where water feeds into the heater itself, I'll kill that too, just be safe. Then, I guess just let the water in the tank cool a bit to protect the coils, drain it, and then begin the repair. I think i have a plan in place, lol. Thank you again.

      Why would you drain the hot water tank just to fix your taps? Sorry but that makes no sense.
      Just shutting off the water coming in to the house should be enough, and the electricity to your tank if you really want, but even that is unnecessary because your tank won't empty unless you're there for days...
      Seems to be a waste of water.

  • @DaLeSy.
    @DaLeSy. 4 роки тому

    Yeah but even if you shut the main off don't you still have several gallons of water in the hot water heater? Doesn't all of that have to come out before you can work on the hot water side handle?

    • @LUCAMTire
      @LUCAMTire  4 роки тому

      Not that I am aware off unless maybe your hot water tank is upstairs and the tap your working on is down stairs then it might gravity feed. But if you shut off water at your main and shut your hot water tank off then open the tap release the access pressure and water in system. Whatever is in the line will drain out. Then you can work on it.
