..... I am absolutely thankful for your video, I was searching variations of the Bill Evans piece... and stumbled across this video. I love slowed down and messy ..... almost abstract variations of an original piece!!! Where the artist gets lost in the piece and we're along for the ride. Your teaching video does that for me on this one Thank you, I'm saving this lesson in my cuts Playlist to listen to a s enjoy over and over. Thanks.
Mark, I really appreciate this video. I listened to it repeatedly yesterday for about 5 hours as I worked. Is it possible to create a piece same as here as you mentioned in the training.... one where you just go for it, have fun, stay slow, .... when you moved to the black keys it was an excellent twist. Please create a longer piece we can jus
.... enjoy, of course with the narrative, but just to freely enjoy the melody and twisted and abstract.... repetitiveness. Thank you in advance, stay blessed.
PS: I love the permission and encouragement to not always know what you’re doing exactly, and the joy and freedom of improvisation!! That was never a part of my classical instruction and why I abandoned it. Much love to you!! You’re encouraging freedom.
Hi All, Time sensitive news: I will be doing free ZOOM jazz class online (donations welcome) Sat., July 13th, 2pm EST All students of jazz are welcome, especially piano players. Playing by attendees is strongly encouraged. To that end, using a computer so that you can use the ZOOM SOUND SETTINGS (Original Sound on) would be a great thing, but not required. Not sure if "Original Sound on" is available on a phone or tablet Questions on the day, or in advance are welcome. us06web.zoom.us/j/84691999549 POSSIBLE Topics: 1: Voicings 2: Chord Substitution and Reharmonization (is there a difference?) 4: Playing in the groove (how to make a metronome swing) 5: How to memorize a simple tune. Donations are welcome Details in the chat during the zoom.
At last , somebody who understand beginners like myself to teach really what is needed; i hear and see a lot of online pianoteachers who talk a lot and show some little lyrics and baselines but not give first a helicopterview to where the music road goes as point of orientation. This improvision lesson is in some way a relief to discover a way to learn to play in your own way.
This is a really good video with well conveyed thoughts about this signature Bill Evans moment. It's probably true that Bill just intended to go into "Some Other Time" and just felt this too much . But also- I read in one of those "Letter from Evans " newsletters way back that Bill's girlfriend at that time, Peri Cousins, used to encourage Bill when he stuck with the vamp awhile when he was playing at home. She would say , "Keep doing that." So it became a little Berceuse to Peri Cousins. It sounds great the way you are doing this, Mark E- Doing it and talking about it.
I’m so grateful for this! I was trained classically decades ago and gave up because it didn’t fit me as I felt so intimated to transition into my true love which is jazz. You’re an excellent teacher!!! Your expertise and nuances are inspirational. I cant wait to start practicing again!!!!!
Thanks for the nice comments… Please share with anyone you think might be interested. Maybe subscribe, as I’m always putting new things on the channel. 🙏
i have a number of pianist transcriptions for this that leave out the "B" in the first chord which I just don't get...many leave out the "G" in the C^7 but I think it is essential to hearing the inner tone movement. so kudos and ty! lol i wrote the above and then saw how u left out the G in the first C^7 and it did sound good! I think it was the G in the second chord that is more significant...maybe...enough rambling...ty again...
All my gratitude because you totally helped me to open my mind in front of the piano with this lesson. I went from fear to enjoy the practice. I’m not a jazz player, just an average musician in love with this piece. I’ll keep on working on it and the others to come. Thank you so much sir… you made my day! Greetings from Spain..
well done, very useful! in fact, I will try this today :) My biggest challenge, as I am new to improvising, is how to keep the left hand correct and on tempo, while the right does its things... Your video may help me overcome this so thank you in advance! 😄
Freedom! Not theorize but hear it, feel it. First time since weeks I cannot wait to sit in front of the piano. 🎉
Thanks! Glad to hear that it's motivating. Please share with others.

I’ll try to do one without talking!

This beautiful meditative video spoke to my mind and my soul
Thanks, that's so kind of you.
