All it takes is one JERK on the water. (How to pass people on the water)

  • My buddy Jason and I decided to fish the Skeeter Owners Tournament on Lake Fork and had a blast. Problem was there were thousands of boats on the lake which meant we were going to encounter a bunch of fishermen. Every time we passed a boat, or got close as we moved down the bank was fine except for ONE guy. I decided to do a video and show you how we go about handling these situations and that we think is the right way to pass people, and not cut people off.

Growing up in the 70s my uncle would take me out bass fishing , one thing I always noticed how friendly fellow boaters and fishermen were, always a wave, sportsmanship was utmost importance, not today , its crazy, I fish Lake Chickamauga about 10 times a year , I'm surprised now when I don't have a jerk cut us off or pull in front of us , people are just so selfish now

I've had guys see I was trolling down a bank and they would leap frog me and start fishing where I was headed....so I leap frogged them and started fishing. I wouldn't do that if they didn't do it to me 1st. I like how you guys have respect and consideration for other anglers....there is always water to fish, may not be the freshest water with no recent pressure, but that's when you have to throw something that nobody else is throwing.

i respect you guys more then the guys i deal with. i was sitting on a bed with a couple hogs one time with a rental with a crap anchor system and was trying for awhile. dudes on a nice boat hitting everywhere on lake they want basically still had to come and try to cast right on em. other day i was out early on banks hitting a cliffy area hooking up here and there. some old dude creeps his boat to shoreline and drives straight through where i been casting and catching and waves to me.. some people man. i usually dont say anything because i can easily take it to the next level and go crazy but i would rather just stay cool we are all fisherman. usually the only time i lose it is when i get spooled but i still blame that on myself that i should pay attention and reel in asap when i notice the people not paying attention. i just fish for fun. and i love dropshot and weightless i got a two pole license so ill throw out a texas rigged 6" senko far cast and then drop shot a few casts while the senko sinks to bottom. and ya i been spooled from doing that. but the way you guys pass is what i can respect. you give the dude his casting lane and distance and move on. compared to guys who see you catch move up on you and cant find their own fish. on the banks i deal with fisherman and wakeboarders always trying go close to shoreline and hit where im catching. its annoying. usually in the rental ill just leave the spot and turn on motor right there and rip that 10 hp motor as fast as can to hopefully blow the spot for guys trying catch smae fish i just released. cant really do anything about the wakeboarders i hate them the most when they have rookie and they fall in front of where im fishing and spend 20 minutes doing donuts trying get the rookie back up... hopefully with the new boater license they are introducing it will have a class on boating etiquette and how to respect other people on the water along with it.

As a new bass boat owner I love these videos. I didn't really have to make those decisions in a kayak as most boaters understand that they can freely move to a new location and I couldn't. So one other note to these encounters is the fact there are some boaters like me that may not do something maliciously, but are just ignorant of all the unwritten rules. Now I would never clearly cut someone off or anything and I always try to ask if it is okay to go this way or that, but I am not going to lie I have like a mini anxiety attack every time I am faced with a go under or over someone decision or especially pulling up somewhere with a lot of boats on the lake that day. Sometimes I will just leave to avoid the potential encounter. The way you handle these encounters is really impressive. Thankfully I have not had a bad encounter, but I know it's coming. It is inevitable and you have set a nice example of how to handle them. So be nice people! Some people just don't know or are new as well.

Actually you kinda temporarily do. In tournaments for example you can't fish within x distance from another boat. Also there are laws (vary by state) to keep x distance from boats. Distance increases for non powered boats and especially sail boats. They have right of way since they rely on the wind. Yet I see time and time again people going full speed close to unpowered vessels. I've almost been hit by a boat who was not paying attention and didn't have his nav lights on wich is required by law.

I was pre-fishing for kayak tournament yesterday, hitting the bank in a 5 acre pocket yesterday and a boat was in there, I stayed on my side and they stayed in the area they were in, opposite sides. I heard them talking about coming in behind me and fishing out and the boater just said nah, we'll bounce to a different spot, they idled out and were very cool. All the pleasure boaters I think wanted to see if they could flip me with their wake! Its so much easier and relaxing to just be polite and chill with each other. The guy like you ran into is just so much wasted energy. I probably would have asked him, so you're not having any luck getting bit huh? And left it at that after laughing at him. Lol.

It's been a few years ago I was fishing down a bank catching fish on a wacky worm. I seen a couple of secondary points in the back end of that cove I was planning on fishing when this guy comes in from behind me trolls down the middle of the cove and gets right in front of me and fishes that point and heads toward the back a total cut off he knew I was going that direction. I turned the boat and went straight across the cove and fish the other bank going back out only to have him do the same thing to me again only this time we had words he invited me to the bank and I proceeded to go to bank but then he give up. I asked him are you fishing the tournament today and he said no are you and I said no would it have mattered and do you always make it a point of fishing in front of people. I explained the lake was 13 miles long plenty of water you don't have fish on top of people 🤷🏻‍♂️.

We have the James/Chick Rivers, Northwest River, North Landing River, and the Chowan River in NE North Carolina along with some other rivers in close proximity, which allow you to fish the weekends and tournaments without being that jammed up. Not saying there arent close encounters, but they are waaaay less than what you showed. You could probably drop over a thousand Lake Forks in all the bodies of water I mentioned. This went on for years and the last I fished in his boat I was like 18, and he tried to jump on another guy's boat to start a fight because he thought the guy had cut us off (he didn't) so a screaming contest starts. Years ago fishing a cove, I was in the cove first and a guy came in on the other side. He anchored and started fishing a pocket in the grass along the bank. When I went up that side of the cove, I stopped casting and went around him with at least 125' separation between us. With his woman onboard, dude starts screaming and cursing telling me I stole his spot and he was coming over to kick my a**. I just laughed at him and that angered him even more. He pulled his anchor and started toward my boat and got about 5' away, I just told him that stepping onto my boat was going to be a life altering decision for him. He seemed to decide that his balls were not as big as he thought they were.
I have always been respectful toward other guys at the ramps and on the water, most fishermen are the same way. But of course, when you spend years on the water, most people will eventually run across an a**hole on the water, especially at the ramp.

Todd go captain a high-school boat in their tournament, you wanna see crazy fools that just went and bought a boat for the kids to fish and have no clue how to run it, that's the place. 1st year I stayed pissed, now I just laugh and move on. Every now and then I have to say something about what an adult is teaching his kids but it normally ends up with them wanting to fight. I always tell them our check in time and where we can do it at and I've never seen them.

Years ago I was fishing a point that was created by the bend in the large creek (dog leg) it is called and a two guys in an alluminum boat just had to drive between me and the bank as they were headed to the back of the creek, even though a wider part of the creek was behind me and it also has less stumps in that part. They also had what appeared to be a young boy probably 10-12 years old sitting in a pedistal chair on the front of the boat as they were cruising along in a very stumpy area of the creek. If they would have hit a stump, the kid would have gone flying off the front of the boat and into the water, and possibly run over by the idiot driving the boat. Lots of stupid people out there, and especially now, people seem to be getting more stupid all the time.

Hmmm, In my experience boat fishersman never respect bank fisherman. I'll be out fishing trout from the bottom and they will just go out of their way to go over my line and even cast in my direction despite my poles being up high and obvious. With plenty of room to not even have to go near me. Even had a few situations when boaters have snagged my line.

However I have my head down a lot of times fishing down the bank, and will accidentally roll up on a guy fishing the bank and never see his lines in the water. I can promise it’s an accident and usually too late and I’ve already gotten to close.

@@davidgalloway904 I think it might have something similar to do with why people will speed up to a car in front of them on a road late at night and not pass the person in front of them despite the road being empty. They are afraid to be alone or something.
Most bank fisherman however want to be alone and relaxed and take in nature. Boat fisherman seem like they are in a hurry and every casual sunday is treated like a derby tournament. The only thing that deters them is when they see the long rifle propped up next to the fishing chair. Of course it's meant for the bears and cougars but the boaters are usually so self absorbed they think it is meant for people like them and their own self doubt about their possible past actions makes them move along in most cases.
