BMW G310GS Review 2020 - Cons & Issues Galore

  • In this BMW G310GS Review, I take the baby GS away from Sydney for the day and put it through the test to see whether this is a worthy adventure motorcycle or should you look at alternatives?
The BMW G310GS comes with a 313cc single cylinder, liquid cooled engine that produces 34 horsepower. It has a 19 inch front wheel and a 17 inch rear wheel giving it a lower ground clearance than your traditional adventure motorcycles.
I personally think that the BMW g310gs looks aesthetically pleasing, resembling the same styling as its larger counterparts.
Although the BMW G310GS was fun to ride, I loved the sound of the exhaust and it is easy to handle. I was not pleased with its performance, build quality and overall feel. It felt clunky and unresponsive, the handlebars would wobble when you let them go while travelling a certain speed. The gear changes and revs did not seem consistent.
It seems as though the motorcycles build quality has been compromised and it isn't as polished of a product as the larger displacement GS motorcycles are. The bike goes for $8100 brand new however it faces some decent competition from its rival companies.
The foot pegs and standing position on the motorcycle make it awkward and hence I didn't feel like it would make a good bike for off roading.
I would be inclined to choose other motorcycles that I have test ridden.
    Anyway, enjoy the video!

You are providing a terrible review. You want it to be a bigger bike than it is. Why do you people do that? There are business reasons for certain decisions, marketing reasons, price point. All you are complaining about are things you can adjust. As far as the wobble is concerned that very well could be the front tire but why not contact BMW and provide an update instead of saying what you said. Just terrible.

I think the issue is specific to the reviewer’s test bike or maybe wasn’t properly assembled. Know about three people here in the US who have this and LOVE it. One guy beats the hell out his and runs like it is brand new (2 years). Cannondale tried to do that reverse cylinder setup with their MX dirt bike and failed.

I recently bought a used 2019 baby GS. Only had a 1000 clicks on it. I think it’s a fabulous bike. I have a 2020 Indian scout bobber and a 2017 Ducati monster. Each one is enjoyable in its own right. It’s a 310cc 34 pony bike. I don’t expect it to be like an 850 or 1200. It’s tons of fun to ride! And for $5300 it’s a steal. No offence, awful biased review

I love my 2019 baby GS. It's not a 1250GS, but I wanted a small displacement ADV bike that was maneuverable and not too much effort. I almost never ride highways. It'll do 80 MPH or 130 KPH, but it's a bit buzzy over 6000 RPM, which is 60 MPH. I love the design and the appearance. The fit and finish is excellent for a bike in its price range. I paid US$4920 new out the door with a three year warranty but I bought it in late fall when they were making room for the new models. It was easy to upgrade to all LED lighting which is standard for 2021 and beyond. Larger pegs aren't a problem either with $20 cheap bolt-on platforms or $200 teplacement Pegz. The suspension is soft but this isn't a motocross bike for big jumps. It's very comfortable to ride. My only complaint? I wish the fuel tank was 22 litres instead of 11 litres.

Well, that was 13:44 of my life I'll never get back. It's a beginner's bike, an entry-level BMW, a docile and lightweight, do it all bike. Clearly, the wanderer never got this memo. If one is looking for a "top of the line" adv bike, of course, this is NOT it. But if you're new to the scene and your frontal lobe IS functioning, then this clearly is a great choice. Yes, you'll probably be looking to step up within a year or so, depending on what kind of riding you do--which was the case with me when I got my 310GS. I had 2009 Concours 14 . It had that handlebar shake when you let go of it. I hated that about it. I changed front tires, brake rotors. Nothing helped. I read lot of bikes do that. My GS1200 doesn't. May have something to do with road having a crown for water to drain. I've had more than one bike do that. The first 750 Hondas some had a death wobble at higher speeds. This would turn me away from this bike more that it being a single cylinder.

I have a 2020 GS and i dont get that wobble at all, not even at high speed. I think its a dangerious that wobble ( i had it on a non-BMW naked bike and turns out when the replaced the fork oil/seal on my naked. The tigthened it too tight when put the suspension back causing that wobble you had). I think its your bike specific not all GS310 ( so a Quality Control issue i think ) as they might of overtightened at a maufucturer level or dealer tightened the middle, causing the wobble. I think you got a dud. But I would take it back to bmw and get that fixed by the mechanics. As that is dangerious, i would not ride a bike that did that.

Way off beam apart from comments about ergonomics which are spot on. After 1000 miles I reckon that this bike does have one or two frustrating points. Gears so close ratioed that finding neutral quickly isn't the best. Also reckon you could do with a 31" inside leg when getting on/off the bike or could get caught on a camber/poss parking up. Also vibey at 60mph. But it handles so well in corners and also super comfy across the road surfaces in UK, which are generally horrendous on back roads.

I wish BMW offered a G310GS Adventure version with a 5 gallon fuel tank, tubeless spoke wheels, an aluminum bash plate, engine protection bars, larger and more aggressive pegs, and fully adjustable suspension front and rear. Those upgrades would cost BMW less than $400 and I'd pay $2000 more for that bike.
Bike manufacturers, not just BMW, look at their small ADV bikes as beginner bikes. They use them to get new customers on the upgrade path to their mid size and full size ADV bikes. Older riders typically have more discretionary income and are buying smaller bikes because they have trouble handling and lifting larger bikes, but I'd argue that a small ADV bike like the G310GS is better off road for all riders. Unfortunately, the marketing department doesn't want to admit this, so they won't sell full featured lightweight ADV bikes because most people wouldn't buy their more expensive larger bikes. That's why smaller ADV bikes are built to a budget and are stripped of premium features. The companies would rather sell someone their first bike, that leads to their second and third. They aren't interested in selling old riders their last bike, so they miss the opportunity to make an R1300GS Adventure profit margin on a G310GS Adventure.

Great review, and consistent with other reviewers (D3Sshooter). The bike has issues with the mirrors, vibrations (to the point of causing numbness in the rider's hands over time), and let's not mention the caliper recall. There are better in-class alternatives (e.g. Honda CBR300R). And yes, I'm a Beemer fan, (R75/5 owner for 30 years), just not this one. Cheers mate!

Bike has some vibration at about 70 yes, but are you really trying to go that fast on this bike all the time? No. The caliper was as simple as taking it in to get it fixed, not a big deal at all. I am not sure what people expect out of a 300cc bike, this is meant for casual riding…..

Our Export 310 GS should have been better built than what we would get in India itself, but the very nature of your trivial details are more than a eye opener.. Maybe a Test ride later I may still stick to my decision. The reason any Indian Made bike will feel bad outside of India, is the Good quality of Roads, heck your Rural roads are way better than our National Highways or Expressways even.. and that’s where this bike may be better suited; in a sense that it’s performance is quite enough for our pathetic road conditions ova here 🙂😌✌🏽

I am renting a 310 GS in South Africa, at the moment. Test drove it, today.
The torque is so, so low. It is a city bike. You have to work, work, work through 1,2,3 to get it to start rolling and stop rolling. Stalled it several times in 2,3 while rolling and just thought I would rejoin traffic.
On the highway, keeping up with traffic at 85kmh, it takes one minute to gas it and get up to 95.
It doesn't even feel like 30 hsprs.
Single cylinder, revving between 6k and 10k for a lot of riding situations? Better be a tough engine.
Brakes are anemic. 300mm single disk and I count 2 pistons. Is it opposed with another 2?
Grab them hard is the only thing to do, and there is no modulation or feel.
This is an Indian bike. Perfect for the India city market. Compare the pricing. If you think you are getting a BMW and a GS, and paying for that quality? It is just marketing.
Would not take this off-road, and it wearing the GS badge is a joke.
Have owned many bikes, and single/thumpers, and there is no problem getting what you pay for, and fits you. Just don't think this is worth more because it is a BMW and they put on a GS sticker.
