Growing up bi in South Carolina in the late 70's early 80's I can still remember hearing this song for the first time on the radio, pulling my car over to the side of the road and sitting there shaking and sobbing until I could drive again.
My favorite from the Smiths would be "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now." When I worked in retail, I would sing that to myself almost every night at work. I never let anyone know what I was thinking, of course. :)

He is riding around with his crush, and is on cloud nine, but when they are alone under the bridge his fear of rejection stops him from making a move. He's alone even when with his family. A teenager who's lost and unsure of himself. The Smiths are dark and brooding, but the music is brilliant.

It’s noteworthy that she keeps dancing in her seat despite the dark lyrical content. I think this is one of the reasons why the smiths endure the test of time. Their music combined Morrissey’s gloom with Johnny Marr’s often uplifting and catchy melodic guitar playing. It always gets me dancing...and nostalgic at the same time.

It is such an uplifting song. No matter how dark, how awful your life may become, there is hope, there is light, there is a light always shining for you. There is always a better day, a better time ahead. Never give up. I am certain it came from Dylan Thomas's poem "Do not go gentle into that good night" where he talks about death and not to lie down and succumb to it but to "rage, rage against the dying of the light". It is an incredibly uplifting song, if you have the open mind to listen and the intelligence to understand.

I think you have not understood the song 100%. He does not mean to die with her, but with him. The song talks about a gay teenager in love and who is not accepted by his family

Morrissey's lyrics have a gay point-of-view, though he tends to avoid being specific about gender in songs about any romantic inclinations. But, duh. We all know he was singing about guys. (Except in the best case of him being gender-specific, "Girlfriend in a Coma."). "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" evokes a common theme, one familiar to any of us who has been a closeted gay boy--while you lust after your best friend, you're hoping that fate will please please please let you get what you want, and, failing that, maybe crashing a 10-ton truck into the two of you, allowing you to spend all of your final moments together and eternity intertwined in peoples' memories. Morrissey doesn't get gender-specific in this song, which leaves it open to be embraced by people beyond angst-filled gay teenagers. Do you know who this song was written about? Do you know how they ended up in that car? Do you know whether or not they found their double-decker bus? Does it matter?

But, with all great songs, the meaning reaches out beyond the concrete. My favorite song by the Smiths. I think we can all relate to being in love like that as a teenager. The lyrics are dark and depressing but the music is so lively and cheerful that it always puts me in a good mood whenever I listen to it. I listen to it at least 2-3 times a week. The commentary about not being loved by your family on top of being lonely and depressed had me start crying, I’m not gonna unload my story here but the reason I started liking reaction channels is cause I don’t feel lonely watching them. Like when an author writes something incredibly relatable, it’s like someone heard you and understands you and is holding your hand. That’s what your commentary for this video felt like. I think people (UA-cam reactors anyway) usually get hung up on the hypothetical death in the chorus and interpret the song as suicidal or depressed -- I always thought this song was a relatively hopeful. Yeah Morrissey's character feels ostracized and unwanted even at home, but at least he has someone in his life who is his lifeline: a person he feels so close to that he would have no regrets spending his last moments with (likely another man, which would explain why he feels like he can't go home -- lots of The Smiths songs are full of allusions to homosexual experiences, some more overt than this song). It's a song about closeness to someone. It's as close as Moz gets to sweetness. Btw. Moz has a tendency to bring up death haphazardly (in part b/c a lot of The Smiths songs seem to be from a youthful/immature perspective, also he just seems to be a morbid, dramatic person IRL). I sometimes think people interpret their songs as being sadder than what was probably intended.
Morrisey was an amazing artist, his music inspired so many people. Especially during the 80s being depressed as a man was considered weak, Morrisey made it ok for men to feel down and made people aware that men could also be depressed and it was ok for men to express their feeling and talk about them

I'll be honest with you I listen to Morrissey still almost everyday. I fell in love with him in the 80s and still I hang on to some of that teenage angst that I carried back then. It's reminiscent. It's beautiful. It's My Life.
your reaction to that song is beautiful and reflects how i feel when listening to a number of The Smiths tracks. on the verge of tears but with all this longing that the "main character" of the song is going to get through it and find love, and the light that never goes out...which i can only guess is "hope". Its a kind of joyful melancholia, wallowing just a bit (?!), but with that added serenity. "To die by your side-" seems as much about, "let all the pain be over cos i'm with you now in this perfect moment and if it all ended now, we at least have this". thank you for playing it and showing us your response.

One of the most important English bands ever, the Queen is Dead is probably the best album but they are all amazing tbh so listening to them in order is probably the way to go, enjoy 👍

I love The Smiths, one of the best bands of the '80s and this may be their best song. There are plenty more excellent ones though. Yes Morrissey who wrote the lyrics has a dark sense of humor, for instance another of their songs is Girlfriend in a Coma.
I always take this song as a young man trying to express himself to someone he loves or has a crush on. He's trying to connect to them, but maybe the awkwardness of youth makes it difficult. So he says "if a double-decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is a heavenly way to die." In other words, even if he were killed, if she were with him it would the best moment for him because she was with him!

Last year I saw Johnny Marr the guitarist with the Smiths who’s now a solo artist) play this live with an orchestra in Manchester. Imagine a huge room full of Mancunians (people from Manchester) belting this at the top of our voices.
Discovering a band that is so different from anyone around now must be an eye opener and I wish i could experience it all over again. Well done for this India. Their songs are sad but uplifting at the same time. Peerless melodies and Johnny Marr on guitar

I once knew a girl who introduced me to The Smiths back in 2018. Before that i already knew Morrissey but i had no idea he was in a band. We were in Manchester in the cat caffee and they played a lot of the Smiths songs and i just sat there, vibing with her and instantly fell in love with their music just as i did fall in love with that girl.... I was actually happy for once but when i got home and 2 weeks or so passed by... while i was listening to more The Smiths songs... she suddenly ghosted me and i never saw her again.... Now i cannot listen to ANYTHING from The Smiths without always thinking of her. I love their music and yet it hurts me so much…

I think you have not understood the song 100%. He does not mean to die with her, but with him. The song talks about a gay teenager in love and who is not accepted by his family

Morrissey's lyrics have a gay point-of-view, though he tends to avoid being specific about gender in songs about any romantic inclinations. But, duh. We all know he was singing about guys. (Except in the best case of him being gender-specific, "Girlfriend in a Coma."). "There is a Light that Never Goes Out" evokes a common theme, one familiar to any of us who has been a closeted gay boy--while you lust after your best friend, you're hoping that fate will please please please let you get what you want, and, failing that, maybe crashing a 10-ton truck into the two of you, allowing you to spend all of your final moments together and eternity intertwined in peoples' memories. Morrissey doesn't get gender-specific in this song, which leaves it open to be embraced by people beyond angst-filled gay teenagers. Do you know who this song was written about? Do you know how they ended up in that car? Do you know whether or not they found their double-decker bus? Does it matter?

Although the greatness of the song is that the feelings are universal and applicable to everyone, for me is it much more understandable if I focus the meaning in a hypothetical concrete case. I remind you that English is not my language, sometimes I have to use that kind of tricks ...

But, with all great songs, the meaning reaches out beyond the concrete. In the last few days, I've asked many friends about this song, and my straight friends tend to find it as meaningful as my gay friends. And, by the way, your English is very good!
My favorite song by the Smiths. I think we can all relate to being in love like that as a teenager. The lyrics are dark and depressing but the music is so lively and cheerful that it always puts me in a good mood whenever I listen to it. I listen to it at least 2-3 times a week. Great reaction India!
The commentary about not being loved by your family on top of being lonely and depressed had me start crying, I’m not gonna unload my story here but the reason I started liking reaction channels is cause I don’t feel lonely watching them. Like when an author writes something incredibly relatable, it’s like someone heard you and understands you and is holding your hand. That’s what your commentary for this video felt like. My FBI man really be reading my diary and showing me this recommendation
I think people (UA-cam reactors anyway) usually get hung up on the hypothetical death in the chorus and interpret the song as suicidal or depressed -- I always thought this song was a relatively hopeful. Yeah Morrissey's character feels ostracized and unwanted even at home, but at least he has someone in his life who is his lifeline: a person he feels so close to that he would have no regrets spending his last moments with (likely another man, which would explain why he feels like he can't go home -- lots of The Smiths songs are full of allusions to homosexual experiences, some more overt than this song). It's a song about closeness to someone. It's as close as Moz gets to sweetness.
Btw. Moz has a tendency to bring up death haphazardly (in part b/c a lot of The Smiths songs seem to be from a youthful/immature perspective, also he just seems to be a morbid, dramatic person IRL). I sometimes think people interpret their songs as being sadder than what was probably intended.

Morrisey was an amazing artist, his music inspired so many people. Especially during the 80s being depressed as a man was considered weak, Morrisey made it ok for men to feel down and made people aware that men could also be depressed and it was ok for men to express their feeling and talk about them
India, keep in mind, as often as people label The Smiths as depressing, Moz' lyrics were mostly toungue-in-cheek. He loved dark humor and loved a tragic joke. After all...he has Irish blood❤

I'll be honest with you I listen to Morrissey still almost everyday. I fell in love with him in the 80s and still I hang on to some of that teenage angst that I carried back then. It's reminiscent. It's beautiful. It's My Life.

"To die by your side-" seems as much about, "let all the pain be over cos i'm with you now in this perfect moment and if it all ended now, we at least have this". thank you for playing it and showing us your response.

And being black girl from Washington DC, it wasn’t cool........ but I listened, and I loved him anyway!!!! And this is one of my absolute favorites!!! 🌸💜🌸

I always take this song as a young man trying to express himself to someone he loves or has a crush on. He's trying to connect to them, but maybe the awkwardness of youth makes it difficult. So he says "if a double-decker bus crashes into us, to die by your side is a heavenly way to die." In other words, even if he were killed, if she were with him it would the best moment for him because she was with him!
When you're up for it, another song of interest is "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division. Lead singer Ian Curtis had that distinctive voice.

I strongly believe that when he mentions the darkened underpass is exactly the place where he would have had the chance to kiss the person he's with, in that car, but then again the fear always stops him from doing anything.
The Smiths “Ask.” Please? It’s a much more upbeat song, although it written during the Cold War and mentions “the bomb.” Just a little background if/when you react! 😊

I don't know if it's this way for anyone else, but I find his lyrics to be so constantly sad and depressing that I laugh at most of his songs. Like he's so doing this on purpose to see how far he can push it. The titles seem to make it obvious too. Like he's almost parodying himself. I just have to chuckle.

There is loads of fun and humor in Morrisseys writing. Some of his lyrics have made me actually burst out laughing.
I once knew a girl who introduced me to The Smiths back in 2018. Before that i already knew Morrissey but i had no idea he was in a band. We were in Manchester in the cat caffee and they played a lot of the Smiths songs and i just sat there, vibing with her and instantly fell in love with their music just as i did fall in love with that girl.... I was actually happy for once but when i got home and 2 weeks or so passed by... while i was listening to more The Smiths songs... she suddenly ghosted me and i never saw her again.... Now i cannot listen to ANYTHING from The Smiths without always thinking of her. I love their music and yet it hurts me so much…
