Steve, it takes courage to even mention dealing with a family situation and I'm sure that somewhere, someone will see this video and do the same thing - grab their camera and go out in nature to shoot whatever they can. We sometimes forget we are mammals so being out in nature is completely normal and has so many benefits to our souls because, at the root of who we are, we belong out there. Good luck to you and your family. I hope the situation comes out as positive as possible.

Steve, as it turns out, that was exactly what I needed as well! Incredible video, awesome production and amazing shots! As an official ‘old guy’ (just turned 70), I am now obligated to offer unsolicited advice: “When you wake up one day and find yourself walking through Hell, just keep walking.” As overly simplistic as it sounds, sometimes the best we can do is suit up, show up, listen with empathy and if called on, be honest. Looks to me like you are doing that. Get back out there soon!

I recently became familiar with the Western Tanager at a rental on Whitefish Lake. A gorgeous male frequented our deck every morning. I quickly became a fan and looked forward to his visits. Back home now in Florida and I really miss seeing him on those cool mornings! Nice to know that you got some respite with nature….wishing you and your family some ✌🏻during this challenging time.

Great work. Love your hike and shoot style. It's as much about spending time with the critters as it is getting the shot. I was just telling my son in law that being out taking pictures is one of the few things I do that I forget about time and don't think about someplace else I should be. Good luck with whatever issue you are dealing with.
PS: Just replaced my D500 with a Z8. I've done some casual backyard shooting. Can't wait to get it out in the wild. Although, chasing a toddler around trying to get a good shot can be pretty wild.

I am very envious of your time with the Tanagers, when they pass through my area, most of them keep on going and if I am very lucky I will find one or two which have stayed behind when I am out. Fantastic captures. As to your personal trials, it is better for you to get out and recharge your personal battery than stay immersed in it. You will be more use to your family if you can approach things with a calmer mind. My life went into the crapper about 10 years ago and the only thing that kept me going was getting out and shooting. I did not even need the perfect image I just needed to connect to nature and regain perspective. Life is better now and I have a better feel on life than I did. Do not feel guilty for taking time to look after yourself, you have a connection with being in nature and that replenishes those parts of yourself that have been drained. It took me a long time to understand that we all need boundaries where we can say no and not feel guilty. You are doing yourself no good by not looking after yourself. I wish you happy shooting and that life gets better.
