So nice to see an historic home still standing proud after all those depressing stories of the Gilded age mansions that were torn down.

I agree, but if you notice most of the houses that have been demolished in this series are the enormous "marble palaces "that require both a large, disposable fortune to run/heat/keep repaired and a large staff of people who are no longer willing to do that kind of work.

@Lydia Gaebe, I agree wholeheartedly. I will never be among the bloodthirsty mob making excuses for why a perfectly good structure must be destroyed. Sometimes the better answer you & I believe in takes a little bit of patience. Period.

With alot of these older homes you show I always see some room or space or window..something and I'm thinking, 'uh! I need that in my home!' Or the other is 'ohhh, so that's what I was trying to accomplish'. Love older homes w the natural woodwork and every room, door, closet, hidden shelf ECT, has a purpose. You cannot beat an older home's style and class and dedication. They were built to last.

So many new houses are just a set of featureless white boxes...rooms with absolutely no character or personality. When did people decide that they liked that more than homes like this with all those beautiful features.
I honestly can't pick my favourite thing about this house, I loved everything. Even the shutters and the way they fold into the window frames are beautiful.

Thanks for the post. With 2 bad knees, my days of touring homes, museums, etc. are over. Thanks to internet videos, I am able to be an armchair traveler in both time and space (history videos). Unfortunately, you can't take long walks and hikes by video. I miss doing that, but get around a little better now that I have a rolling walker.

What a great find. The chandelier, to the best of my knowledge, was made in Spain. My parents had 4 or 5 in their last home. I've seen this type of window shutter, encased in the window frame, usually in Europe.

I love how the mirror over the fireplace in the music room will reflect the light coming in through the bay window. I am sure they only turn on the lamps in the chandelier after dark! I absolutely love the plantation window shutters that hide in the window casements. I wish that were more common, but I have never seen such a thing before. This is a beautiful house. On one hand, it is too bad that it isn't a family home any more, but on the other hand if it was we wouldn't have ever been able to see the interior. So for that I am grateful.

Massive Door Hinges: I think those door hinges are designed to allow the door to swing open in either direction. The then equivalent of a swinging door. There may be internal springs to close the door as well.

This is a beautiful home. Thank you for sharing it with us. I did some research on the family who lived here from the late 1800s to 1996. James Gurney was a gardener in London who was commissioned from Regents Park in London to help develop Tower Park in 1866. This home passed to his children and later his grandchildren who all served as superintendents of Tower Park. James Gurney had two granddaughters, Bernice and Flora, who were born in 1900 and 1906, respectively. Neither woman ever married or had children. I find this to be common among women in the 1900s who inherit property; with the financial security of home ownership they don't have to marry and follow the social norms of their time.

Ok? For all of the house museums that I have toured, none has ever had a staircase in a bathroom. I'm guessing that this house did not originally have indoor plumbing and bathrooms were snuck in anywhere that there appeared to be room. Is this home lived in and you have permission to tour it, or is it on the market? Or... you mentioned brides: is it used for functions?
What ever the reason, good video.
