A great compilation of clips, that HST reanimation crash was spectacular. These machines and their MK3 coaches are one of thee safest locos and coaches ever built. I love the HST, it passes my work several times a day on the east coast mainline in Scotland. I hope they last forever as the day they are gone I don't know what I will listen and look out for! I fear 2018 and the end of these iconic machines, they got me interested in railways and model trains. God love em! Thanks for your vid!

Well they've had the best life that they could ever ask for. I mean almost 50 years is a remarkable lifespan, These trains have been the pinicle of british train engineering for over 40 years. In My Opinion the HST 125 has placed itself into my heart and it will never leave me. RIP HST 125 For Your Amazing Lifespan
The XPT is what got me really interested in trains, (The XPT is the Australian version of the HST, very similar in design); I'll miss them once the goverment sends them to the scrapyards.

Thanks so much for this video. I love the Class 43, they are the best trains ever in Britain along with the Class 91s (Intercity 225) in my opinion. @@1BarnetTE. Yea, 43002 Sir Kenneth Grange is to be kept and conserved at the York Railway Museum. The HST operated for almost 50 years, and the IET can't even do 4 years. Long Live the HST 125. (BTW because i lived at Bath all the way up to 2007, my favorite liveries are FGW Barbie and FGW blue).
This video is so bittersweet. It gives me nostalgic back to the late 2000s early 2010s it was a great time and I grew up at that time. the music of this video makes me nostalgic and of the HST its the Train which introduced me into British railways. These trains has a special place in my heart. I love them in the Intercity 125, Intercity swallow and in the older First liveries. I love the Valenta engines!

A load of the HSTs are going to be preserved, Project Miller (The ones preserving whats left of the prototype) said they can't wait to get their hands on a HST, which, I imagine would be liveried into the original HST colours or executive colours, but that's just a theor...Nevermind wrong place
Yeah its the best of british :/ from what I know its been given a lifeline with a few companies, there are still full liveries under one company (cross country) and first great western have converted all the coaches door mechanisms and stuff and only kept 4 carrages and junked the rest
Don’t worry everyone, they are not going to be on their original routes anymore but they will be going to other operators until their withdrawal dates just after 2030 Which is when they turn 54 years old. UPDATE: At this point, the 43’s have been taken of the ECML GWML however are still in fully operation with EMR and CrossCountry and once out of service with EMR they will be put in to storage. Also EMR took some ex-LNER sets until late 2022 when the ugly IETS enter service. EDIT 2021 ! : now the EMR HSTs have 6 days left in service :(
as far as i know they were to be replaced by newer electric loco's, some have been replaced with class 91's and others with the 220 and 221 voyagers. the class 43 fleet have had work to keep them on the rails for longer as their isn't enough money to replace them completely just yet, thank god.

Originally these were suppose to be replaced by the APT, but obviously due to the problems with the APT they never got going. What was BR's loss back in the 70 was a gain for all of us to the present day. These will be phased out by the Hitachi Super Express on the Great Western & East Coast lines, then the Midland MainLine at a later stage. They will still be the backbone for another 10 years plus yet...
Fantastic overview of an iconic world famous train. Towards the end we clearly see and hear how HST has been bought up to date by the re-engineering with MTU power & other mods. I have never been a fan of `clag' and one of the reasons I liked the old Thumpers (class 205 DEMU) first built in 1957 was the almost complete absence of smoke even under full load. The Valenta scream was awesome though. I didn't realise until recently that HST technology was purchased by Australia - see XPT on YT.
@@MrAvant123 Yes, having watched many XPT videos it seems that the VP185 was a vast improvement on ‘Valenta’ especially regarding lube oil smoke. Checkout ‘XPT at Wauchope’ to see what I mean (the longer of the 2 videos although both are of interest in that it’s so rare to see an Express train stopped shortly after departure to assist a customer).

At the time, the Intercity 125 was a symbol of hate. It was what dethroned my beloved Deltics, but over time the Intercity 125 became an icon of British rail travel, and its heartbreaking to know their time is coming to an end,
I can fully understand the hatred towards intercity 125 at the beginning, i am so happy that a handful of the iconic delitics survived, when i look at other trains around that time and read that no examples of that train exist anymore its heartbreaking, i was so offended reciently when i found 125s were being painted as blue pullmans, i would much prefer them remake a pair of pullman powercars. I just hope that the companies in charge of the railways now keep a few full class 43 sets as they are now officially junking alot of powercars and excess carrages

XD the class 43 is amazing and that in itself is not such a good thing considering that it was born at a time when the railways were to be amazing and that failed spectacularly for the second time, first under privatisation and then nationalisation. The class 43 is still loved and lived on only because we couldnt make anything half decient to replace it and be loved as much

British trains suck now but at least at one time there were beasts like this gracing the tracks. Say what you like about snobby Britain but there were few trains that could compete with the HST and still couldn't today.

The crash footage is not real footage, to my knowledge there was no cctv of the crash, it is a cgi reconstruction, it is probably one of the best examples of cgi reconstruction from that time though

Bonniefan 1987 they have already fitted the mtu engines, hense the lack of scream and they are slowly being phased out, i have no idea if its due to the age of the trains themselves or if its all to do with the very gradual electrification of the uk rail network or both
Nice idea. I lived in Swindon when the 43s came into service in the mid seventies, and I have loved them ever since. But it's a shame nobody has time to watch things at real speed. Was the video speeded up to match the length of the music?
Most of the clips are real time speed, a few have been sped up a bit, just because they drag on and I wanted to keep the video moving, i did try to time the clips somewhat
Its gonna be so weird seeing a class 43 waiting scrap or on a preserved railway, its really going to be quite sad to see them go, East Midlands Trains probably won't use the uncomfortable Hitachi sets for a good while and I imagine Grand Central will keep their HSTs, not looking forward to seeing Hitachi class 800s on my local line (ECML) I saw one actually near my school the other day...
No that came later, first great western at the time of the video had the blue livery with the weird ribbon lines through it. I think sometime later they rebranded, turned the hst to a 4 car set (junking unused cars) and then slowly painting their trains green with gwr on them. At the time I made this video the first great western/great western railway region was talking about electrification and replacement of the class 43 trains, I didnt think at the time they were going to repaint them as they seemed to be in the process of replacing them with the hitatchi junk (cant beat the class 43) and such and companies years before said it wasnt fuel economical to run the class 43 with less cars so i never expected a shorter livery to happen aswell
@@otterlyamazing2605 too much work xD would have to source the clips again and such as i dont have the video without the music to rework it and I dont think there are many new liveries either, I will probably remake it once the class 43 is finally decommissioned for good as it will avoid a few years down the line another livery coming out xD

im not sure why FGW had alot of HSTs tbh but alot of HSTS were pushed off the northern london routes by the class 91 in the 90s and then pushed off the virgin and virgin cross country routes round 2003 and other companies took up the trains from those companies, when FGW changed the GWR and started getting rid of the HSTS for the class 800s? to my knowledge they went back to angel trains who then passed them on to scotrail along with the old national express ones and all that. also the HST was first tested on the FGW routes before being rolled out. Im currently looking into the history of the HSTs for a new video but information on company history ownership of the HSTs is not easy to find. However I can give you this information... 1 prototype powercar of 2 scrapped (1993) 197 power cars built of which: 18 scrapped (atleast 6 due to crashes) and most in 2021-2022 1 waiting disposal and scrap 5 being gutted for parts 3 awaiting repairs 1 damaged but no pending repair 5 exhibition status (decommissioned) 37 in storage (future pending) 2 ceased operations 126 in service (63 trains) GWR currently has around 35 (including the gutted) GWR gets its class 43s from angel trains who have 30 in storage right now for use (12 reciently got scrapped from them of both old lner and national express livery as well as FGW) cross country currently have around 15 (cant remember if thats sets or powercars) scotrail took up stock from angel trains which is the former redundant midland stock along with FGW stock (before GWR rebranding) 54 power cars in december GWR are retiring the HST sets completely meaning that angel trains will get an added 35 powercars (they said they are struggling with the future of the HSTs so if demand doesnt arrise then newport will likely see another batch of HSTs for scrap in 2024 cross country have plans to retire the HSTs scotrail has caused a ding dong because they dont want 60 year old HST stock

Buffer HSTs 43013 and 43014 are owned by Network Rail and they weren't upped to 434xx because confusion

The music was to cover the fact the train sounds were very sliced and diced in alot of places, in most of the documentary stuff the guy would talk over the sound so would have to be creative with replacing it with other sound clips and such
Not cool to throw in footage of the Ladbroke Grove crash happening, people were killed in that clip. Hardly a great tribute to the victims being part of a music video and not a great highlight for the HST’s.

Originally they were supposed to be replaced by the InterCity APT-P but it never took off as it had problems, they have been kept in service for quite some time now, but sadly they will be slowly phased out in 2018 when the Hitachi Class 800/1 hits the rails
yeah, they even copied my video info bit 'all liveries under 2012'. I mean i used loads of clips from dvd's and a few you-tubers (for short clips) to make this video possible, but that is something else lol

Did you Michael do *any research whatsoever* Class 43s are NOT cramped and are better then pendolinos, Pendos are cool but the class 43 is better, the coaches are made so they can fit morep people in, so the pendolino is the cramped one, you simply *CANNOT* beat the comfort of a class 43, *AND THE SOUND* Pendolinos never had engines that made screams now did they?
michael chick I have to agree with DMHD trains here, the class 43's are alot better than you give credit. The only benefit of the pendalino and voyager is the fact the sound proofing is superior, all the tech and comfort of the hst is in the pendos and voyagers, arguably it is up to the individual rail companies how they treat the 125 and pendo stock. When maintained properly the 125 stock is just as good as the pendos and voyagers. The added appreciation has to come from the fact that the hst is possibly the best train that britian ever made and has been going strong for nearly 50 years now.

The Valenta sounded good at speed but the smoke from the more 'worn' Valentas became beyond a joke really.

I can fully understand the hatred towards intercity 125 at the beginning, i am so happy that a handful of the iconic delitics survived, when i look at other trains around that time and read that no examples of that train exist anymore its heartbreaking, i was so offended reciently when i found 125s were being painted as blue pullmans, i would much prefer them remake a pair of pullman powercars. I just hope that the companies in charge of the railways now keep a few full class 43 sets as they are now officially junking alot of powercars and excess carrages

What slow outdated and stopgaps? XD the class 43 is amazing and that in itself is not such a good thing considering that it was born at a time when the railways were to be amazing and that failed spectacularly for the second time, first under privatisation and then nationalisation. My parents were on the first of the Paddington crashes, fortunately they were to the rear of the train and escaped unharmed, hate watching the footage of the crash

My mums friend almost died in Ladbroke Grove she was in first class of the HST, she barely escaped the burning carriages

The crash footage is not real footage, to my knowledge there was no cctv of the crash, it is a cgi reconstruction, it is probably one of the best examples of cgi reconstruction from that time though

They aren't retiring they are being fitted with MTU engines.
Bonniefan 1987 they have already fitted the mtu engines, hense the lack of scream and they are slowly being phased out, i have no idea if its due to the age of the trains themselves or if its all to do with the very gradual electrification of the uk rail network or both

Nice idea. I lived in Swindon when the 43s came into service in the mid seventies, and I have loved them ever since. But it's a shame nobody has time to watch things at real speed. Was the video speeded up to match the length of the music?
Most of the clips are real time speed, a few have been sped up a bit, just because they drag on and I wanted to keep the video moving, i did try to time the clips somewhat

Its gonna be so weird seeing a class 43 waiting scrap or on a preserved railway, its really going to be quite sad to see them go, East Midlands Trains probably won't use the uncomfortable Hitachi sets for a good while and I imagine Grand Central will keep their HSTs, not looking forward to seeing Hitachi class 800s on my local line (ECML) I saw one actually near my school the other day...

No that came later, first great western at the time of the video had the blue livery with the weird ribbon lines through it. I think sometime later they rebranded, turned the hst to a 4 car set (junking unused cars) and then slowly painting their trains green with gwr on them. At the time I made this video the first great western/great western railway region was talking about electrification and replacement of the class 43 trains, I didnt think at the time they were going to repaint them as they seemed to be in the process of replacing them with the hitatchi junk (cant beat the class 43) and such and companies years before said it wasnt fuel economical to run the class 43 with less cars so i never expected a shorter livery to happen aswell

Historically it was because they were quieter than steam and the yellow was to make them more visible

The FGW livery painters had a good time... why did FGW have so many HST liveries!?
im not sure why FGW had alot of HSTs tbh but alot of HSTS were pushed off the northern london routes by the class 91 in the 90s and then pushed off the virgin and virgin cross country routes round 2003 and other companies took up the trains from those companies, when FGW changed the GWR and started getting rid of the HSTS for the class 800s? to my knowledge they went back to angel trains who then passed them on to scotrail along with the old national express ones and all that. also the HST was first tested on the FGW routes before being rolled out.
Im currently looking into the history of the HSTs for a new video but information on company history ownership of the HSTs is not easy to find. However I can give you this information...
1 prototype powercar of 2 scrapped (1993)
197 power cars built of which:
18 scrapped (atleast 6 due to crashes) and most in 2021-2022
1 waiting disposal and scrap
5 being gutted for parts
3 awaiting repairs
1 damaged but no pending repair
5 exhibition status (decommissioned)
37 in storage (future pending)
2 ceased operations
126 in service (63 trains)
GWR currently has around 35 (including the gutted)
GWR gets its class 43s from angel trains who have 30 in storage right now for use (12 reciently got scrapped from them of both old lner and national express livery as well as FGW)
cross country currently have around 15 (cant remember if thats sets or powercars)
scotrail took up stock from angel trains which is the former redundant midland stock along with FGW stock (before GWR rebranding) 54 power cars
in december GWR are retiring the HST sets completely meaning that angel trains will get an added 35 powercars (they said they are struggling with the future of the HSTs so if demand doesnt arrise then newport will likely see another batch of HSTs for scrap in 2024
cross country have plans to retire the HSTs
scotrail has caused a ding dong because they dont want 60 year old HST stock

The music was to cover the fact the train sounds were very sliced and diced in alot of places, in most of the documentary stuff the guy would talk over the sound so would have to be creative with replacing it with other sound clips and such

Originally they were supposed to be replaced by the InterCity APT-P but it never took off as it had problems, they have been kept in service for quite some time now, but sadly they will be slowly phased out in 2018 when the Hitachi Class 800/1 hits the rails

Did you Michael do *any research whatsoever* Class 43s are NOT cramped and are better then pendolinos, Pendos are cool but the class 43 is better, the coaches are made so they can fit morep people in, so the pendolino is the cramped one, you simply *CANNOT* beat the comfort of a class 43, *AND THE SOUND* Pendolinos never had engines that made screams now did they?
michael chick I have to agree with DMHD trains here, the class 43's are alot better than you give credit. The only benefit of the pendalino and voyager is the fact the sound proofing is superior, all the tech and comfort of the hst is in the pendos and voyagers, arguably it is up to the individual rail companies how they treat the 125 and pendo stock. When maintained properly the 125 stock is just as good as the pendos and voyagers. The added appreciation has to come from the fact that the hst is possibly the best train that britian ever made and has been going strong for nearly 50 years now.
