THANK YOU. I love that you mentioned that all BIPOC have to share the category! As far as data points to track in 2021, I think an interesting one to try out would be tracking self help books read? I didn't see it in your genre listed but I thought I saw at least one book that fit in that category

Have you considered getting an e-book reader, their screens don't give off tge blue light and are much more comfortable to read. I switched to ebook reader late last year and honestly I love it. Allows me to buy books without having the physical copy but reading experience is similar to physical. Also very portable/much lighter than physical books. (If you don't want to support Amazon there are a few non-kindle options)

Another fun thing you could track is where the books are set (in terms of countries), even though that sometimes doesn't work for fantasy/sci-fi. But it's still a fun way to "travel Around the world" 😊

I would be happy to see a video dedicated to translated fiction you read. I'm on a road to read a book (preferably classic or literary fiction/contemporary) from each country of the world, and i'ts going not great so far (however I read some amazing things).

When you said you hate e-books, have you considered a Kindle? I love, love, love physical books, but I started to read a lot of e-books when I did a year abroad and couldn't take my darlings with me. Kindles and other e-readers really make the reading experience very different from reading from a pc or cellphone, so maybe that would be a good thing!
My author recommendations are José Saramago, Mia Couto (both highly awarded Portuguese-native writers) and Chimamanda Adichie. Saramago and Couto are beloved authors for me given their native language - my native language ^^ - and they write beautiful pieces of art. Chimamanda I would say is the best prose writer alive today - her Americanah novel is an amazing construction of a Black African woman moving to the USA and the implications of such choices. Also I would recommend Women Who Run With Wolves, because that book is definitively an experience. Merry Christmas!

A couple of recommendations from Galiza (originally written in Galician), if you get the chance:
    1. Head of Medusa (originally, A cabeza de Medusa) by Marilar Aleixandre (woman). Published in 2008. Feminist fiction with elements from Greek mythology.
    2. Long Night of Stone (orig. Longa noite de pedra) by Celso Emilio Ferreiro (man). Published in 1962. Mid-century Realism poetry about the political repression under Francoist Spain.
    3. New Leaves (orig. Follas Novas) by Rosalía de Castro (woman and our National Poet). Published in 1880. Galician Romanticism poetry. This book started the Rexurdimento movement, which reclaimed Galician as a valid literary language.
    4. The Carpenter's Pencil (orig. O lapis do carpinteiro) by Manuel Rivas (man). Published in 1998. Historical fiction set around the Spanish Civil War (which ended in Franco's regime).

I've used the Bookly app this whole year (highly recommend ❤) and it tracks my time read and my reading speed, which is super fun for a data nerd like me lol. It also gives an infographic for each boom when you finish it! It has definitely helped keep me on track to meet my reading goals for the year, and helps me focus because I don't want my min/page ratio to fall lol. One of my favorite series I've read recently is the Daevabad trilogy, which is set in the middle east. I loved how S.A. Chakraborty twined the Muslim faith into the culture of the Djinn, and I learned a lot. I also got to meet her at my very first comicon and she was AMAZING. The only downside is that her books make me SO HUNGRY lol. Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already!
Thank you for all the work you've done on Plantmas! I have been looking forward to each video and I've gotten so many good ideas! This one and your reading bujo may be my favorite so far! My IG is @natalieryn 🤞🤞🤞

You have tracked so many data points, I'm not sure what else you could include! 😅 Maybe just in a monthly tracker, you can track how much you read per month, just focusing on reading progress overall, just to see what months you read more vs. those you read less?
To touch on genres though, for poetry and romance, since they were the lower ones for you, for poetry, I would recommend Lang Leav if you've not already read. I feel her poetry would be very approachable for anyone. Love & Misadventure, Lullabies, and The Universe of Us would be great to start with.
For romance, I can't do the stereotypical bodice busters; I usually stick with paranormal romance's because it's getting that fantasy/sci-fi/mythology vibes with romance/relationships. Off the top of my head, JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood comes to mind. It's been a few years since I've read it, but I do remember it being one of the first para-rom's I read that included a gay couple (it takes a few books before she gets to that because the characters are teenagers when they first meet, so you kinda get some slow burn vibes), but it is definitely a more M/F series than LGBTQIA+.

How about getting an e-reader like Kobo and Kindle? They don't hurt the eyes. I have a Kobo and you can adjust the light and the color which really helps! You can also borrow ebooks from a library directly from the device. I personally never thought I would like an e-reader but now I'm sold!

i think you should keep tracking diversity bc it is so important, i found out many books and authors because of you this year and it was so so so good for me in so many ways, next year i want to read more books about neurodiverse authors and stories be it fiction or nonfiction so maybe that' an idea :) normally i just go with the flow and don't track more than the name of the book, author and my rating, sometimes i even forget to write a review lol but i love seeing other people datas bc i always find something new! also, i felt it on my soul when you talked abt it how you were an avid reader and then life took over bc that's def what happened with me for the past few years, i'm still not as big as a reader as i was but i'm happy with my pace and i'm not pressuring myself and it's been great :) congrats on 125 books and happy christmas eve!! I’m so impressed you’ve read 125 books! I struggle to read, physical books are my favourite too, but audiobooks mean I can listen to a book on my daily commute into work, so audiobooks have been my most consumed format this year too. Maybe this isn’t for you, but could you have a section for Booker prize winning authors/other literary prizes? This is how I find books that are outside of my preferred sci-fi genre.

One Booktube readathon that really helped me find a lot of interesting books from outside of the USA was the CaribAthon. I also read a number of books this past year that had connections to both the Caribbean and Canada, so that would cover two of your goals in that respect fairly easily. One data points I forgot to track previous but will be adding going forward is for disability and nerodiversity.

I think a further breakdown of where you're getting your books would be interesting. I know you track ARCs, but how many come from Booktuber recommendations, how many from Goodreads or ads based on what you've already read, how many did you just randomly pick up from looking at an interesting cover with no one telling you anything about it. I don't do it much now (especially with Corona and all), but in high school I would sometimes just close my eyes, pick out a book from the library shelves and start reading without ever looking at the cover or author name. I don't know how to randomize audio books to the same degree that my "blind reading" method was, but it might be an interesting way to get you into genres or subject matters that you've never considered.

Oh wow you've covered a lot of ground with these stats! I'm not sure what else to suggest that won't come off as excessive but one data point which you don't necessarily need to track but can calculate from existing data is divide the book ratings by genres and taking an average, maybe it'll come off as a surprise if some genres rated more highly (or lower) than others and base your next book off that score? Or finding the average time it took for you to finish a certain book? So like X minutes (or hours or days) per page lol to see how engaging or not engaging some books were! I know that's something I'd be interested to find because even though I love Sci fi and fantasy I find that I take forever to finish them but I can finish Romance novels in two days 😅. @hirzanidea

Hi love how you've included so much information about what you track! I do have a couple of thoughts. How about tracking how you came across the book; i.e. a friend's referral, just perusing listings, accidentally, or because it was an author you liked. Also, exactly how much time, from the first page to the last page, it took for you to finish the book. Additionally, how many books you end up purchasing because you end up loving it so much. The books I loved readying are some of the following; in horror/romance/comedy are Queen Betsy series by Mary Janice Davidson, Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood series by Charlaine Harris; Sci Fi novels by Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffery, Rick Riordan, and JRR TolKien; for Fantasy novels by CS Lewis and of course J K Rowling's Harry Potter series are incredible reads!! I really love reading different gendres and these are just some of the authors I love! Sooo many more but can't recall right now! :P Forgot to let you know; I do not have instagram or twitter but can be reached on email at rpd963@yahoo.com should I be sooo lucky to win! I've been commenting on your videos but was not aware it was not posting as I had not "created" a channel!!! Sigh! :(

You track so many things! Honestly the idea of reading horror terrifies me, I can barely look at a book that is about wars (like the violent type) :0. This might be similar to the "when books were published" category, but I would be interested in seeing how many of the books you read would be difficult to acquire. For example, there's this book series I love by Elinor M. Brent-Dyer, called the Chalet School, and recently I've started trying to find physical copies of the books. Unfortunately, this series mostly went out of print years ago (it was pretty old even when my dad was a child), and some of those books are now retailing for $1000 or over (I nearly fainted, and now I obviously can't get some of the books :/). I guess this might count as a combination of "least popular" and "date published" though.

How do you track? I just set up my journal last night and just have a notes section to explain if they're BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, have a disability, etc. So mine isn't the most sophisticated but I also have a quarterly check in to see how diverse my reading is and what areas I'm lacking in.
To answer your question, I think you should break down the BIPOC category like you are saying, and also the LGBTQIA+ category, and maybe adding a Trans author section in your gender tracking.
Also, do you think you would diversify your French reading? Like books from Canada, France, and other French speaking places?

  • @keyschristina

What do you DO while you listen to audiobooks? This is my problem! Stare at the wall? Paint? I think this year with stores opening (later in the year), you should track if you bought the physical books, borrowed it from the library, bought the audiobooks or borrowed the audiobooks from the library, and bought or borrowed the ebooks too. Or borrowed from friends, got as gifts, or from publishers. Oh and also the setting (if on earth) of the book, to go along with diversifying from English/American. @keyschristina

Awww yes delicious statistics. I doubt I'll get as many in as you, but I'd love to do something similar for my own reading next year!
The House of Styx is totally on my TBR.
The horror part amuses me! I'm a giant weenie as well, and yet the fandom I got the most into this year was... Vampire: the Masquerade. Which, uh, doesn't skimp on the horror elements. I guess it depends on the KIND of horror? (I'm not great with unreality-related stuff.)
For tracking stuff, you've done awesomely at looking at diversity, so it might be interesting to look into Own Voices. For instance, autistic protags being written by autistic writers, nonbinary protags being written by nonbinary writers, stuff like that. It'd also be fantastic for you to compile all this info so it's easy to find stuff that fits our particular tastes!

This was fascinating!! I've been meaning to diversify and increase my own reading, and while you feel your numbers could be better, this was very inspiring.
I don't know how you would track this per se, but it would be interesting to track publishing date along with book setting, as a kind of compare/contrast thing? Like Jane Austen is "contemporary" for a period that a lot of "historical" novels are set in? Also, near-future dystopia or sci-fi looks very different when it's 1970 or 2000 writing about 2050... does that make sense? It might be more of a qualitative than quantitative analysis. It might also be interesting to track neurodiverse/differently-abled characters. (I have a really cool book called Wonderstruck where some main characters are deaf, and recently read All the Light We Cannot See, which features a blind character, for example.)
As for recommendations in your specific goals: for poetry, if you haven't, although I imagine you have, read Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by TS Eliot. I also would recommend checking out Plum Rains, which is a near-future/historical fiction (yes, it's both) set in Japan. In college, I took a course called Black Women Writers, and some I still remember from the syllabus: Krik? Krak! by Eldridge Danticat; Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston; Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid; Praisesong for the Widow by Paule Marshall; and I'm pretty sure there were books by Nella Larsen and Toni Morrison, but don't remember which ones; and others that totally escape me right noe.
I could list other recs, that are more general, but you'd be reading that for a while.

There's actually some middle grade that I really adore - Percy Jackson has a lot of charm for adults (I didn't read it until I was an adult, anyways), and Animorphs which I've always thought kind of endured across demographics.
One of my very favorite books ever (Brave Story) is also arguably middle grade given the age of the protag. I think they tend to be marketed less to adults than YA though.

Lovely video! This is not a stats suggestion, but a reading suggestion nonetheless: you said you hate to read e-books because reading on your phone strains your eyes. A kindle will improve your life! It's not as nice as paper, of course, but it's more similar to reading from paper than to reading from a screen.

Anyway: 1 thing you did not track is time spent reading or listening. This number could be shocking! Not sure where you are in Canada but if you’re in the GTA, I can happily lend you some books in French !

Highly recommend “The Three-body Problem” , a sci-fi fiction written by a Chinese author. Good work by the way. 125 is reaaally impressive and inspiring. I try to keep track with my reading plan in the first half of 2020 but didn’t stick with it then. I will try to do better next year.

I remember that you read a book by Cixin Liu earlier in 2020, but I wonder if you'd like to read a book by the translator Ken Liu? I'd like to recommend The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by him. I've seen it described as science fiction, fantasy or magical reality, but what the synopsis doesn't touch on is that Ken Liu weaves a little bit of Chinese history and culture into almost all the stories. I've been watching your 2020 bookish videos and so far I haven't seen you read a collection of short stories (I'm only on the June recap so maybe that changes, or maybe they're just not your thing?) - perhaps this could be a less intimidating way to start reading books by Chinese authors as this isn't a full novel.
For me the collection was very impactful. It's a book that helped me accept a little more of my Chineseness when living in a predominantly white society, and it would be great to hear your thoughts on it.

Since you’re looking into reading more international works I can very much recommend books by Sebastian Fitzek. He’s a German author but I believe some of his books have been translated to English. His works are mostly Thriller but even if you’re not into that genre I would very much recommend them, I personally love many of his books.

You are already calculating what percent of books are by b.i.p.o.c authors and you said you want to read more translations. You probably already are planning this, but you could chart what languages the works were translated from and what percent of the books you read were translations. FYI I'm going to find a copy of "The House of Styx"
    Thanks for sharing, Happy Holidays.

It would be interesting to see how long it takes for you to read a book. With physical books you would track the hours and with audio books you would track days (did you listen to it all at once or did it take several days). Also I love plantmas and your content in general. You have inspired me so much this year ❤️ (ig: @kirsik)

I think all the stats you are currently tracking is a good start. Breaking down own voices even further might be an interesting stat to track. Like the country they come from, the language they speak, etc. I really enjoyed this video. It's always fascinating to go back and see how our reading went throughout the year. My own reading didn't go well this year but I do plan to pick it back up in 2021.

I would love to see you track where you got the books from. Did you buy them, were they gifted to you from friends/family/the publisher/the author, did you borrow them, are they library books etc. And maybe also what you do with them afterwards, mostly regarding those you own. Do you keep them, so you intend to reread them sometime or do you re-gift them (I love getting books from my friends, that they have already read, we have a whole little carrousel going).

Yes! One of my favourite book tubers is Ashley from Bookish Realm (she’s a librarian and has the most soothing voice). I just started watching Brody from Et tu, Brody? and they are indigenous and make super entertaining videos! Chronicles of Noria was recently recommended to me and she is an absolute delight and lives in Nigeria, I believe. I also really enjoy Jess Owens’ content (and her adorable franchie, Nigel) - she always makes me laugh. I can’t think of anyone else off the top of my head but maybe I should put together a little sheet of recommendations and share it somewhere 😅

Another idea for tracking is for disability/accessible points of view in stories. I bring this up because I have a romance recommendation that might be more interesting to you than some of the other books. It is called The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang. The author is a female POC who has autism (but she didn't know until later in her life). Her main character is very similar: female POC who is noticeably autistic but is very high functioning. It is a nice book because it takes the usual tropes of romance and flips the genders. The man has more 'feminine' traits while the woman has more 'masculine' traits. But these traits are never portrayed as a 'she is so manly' or 'he is so feminine'. The gender-swapped traits they have are easily explained through their own characters and back story, so they don't seem out of place. And, overall, the book was well written. I picked it up and finished it in the same night. It was a short, quick read, but it was amazing to see a different perspective so well written. And, if you do read all of it, read the afterward where the author explains how she found out that she was moderately autistic. It was eye-opening to me.

Thank you very much for that video, it was very interesting :) I am going to find The House Of Styxto read it ^^
I am catching up with all of your videos, so I only discovered today that you speak french and tat you red La Passe-Miroir ! As a French person and a big fan of this series of books, I as so excited about it !
If you want to read more French writer, you can try anyting written by Pierre Botero. He made 4 series of books that are linked together. La Quête d'Ewilan and Les mondes d'Ewilan are a bit more for teenagers, but they are still nicely written. L'Autre, and mostly Ellana's trilogy are a bot more for adults. They are not fantasy, more fantastic universes.
You can also try the Arsène Lupin's series (by Maurice Leblanc). There old fashion books, a bit like Agatha Christie's ones, so the french in it is a little bit 'old fashionned'.
I also read Rouille by Floriane Soulas his year. It takes place in a steampunk universe. not the best book I read, but still nice :)
And, maybe you already know them but here are my two favourite series, both written by women :
The Yorkshire detective, by Julia Chapman; it takes place in the depth of Yorkhire and has so many loving characters. You can not be bored with theses books.
The other one is The Mercy Thomson series, by Patricia Briggs. The are not very famous here in France, but they are very great. The main character is very stubborn and funny, and again, it is very easy to become found of the others characters in the story. I do not like vampire and werewolfs stories, but I love this one, were you will meet supernatural creatures from many origins (europe, like werewolf, faes and vampire), but also american indian's, etc. And it is not scary (big scaredy cat here too), but supernatural creatures are not nice or underunderstood poor creatures. They have rules, strenghts and flaws that make them believables and interesting.
Once again, thank you for that video, and good luck for your 2021 objective !
