    --SUMMARY--
A dictionary attack in cybersecurity is a method used by attackers to crack passwords or encryption keys by systematically entering every word from a predefined list, known as a "dictionary," into the targeted system. This list typically contains commonly used passwords, phrases, or simple combinations that users are likely to choose, such as "password123" or "admin." Unlike brute force attacks, which try every possible combination of characters, dictionary attacks rely on human predictability in password selection. Since many users tend to pick weak or common passwords, these attacks can be effective, especially if the attacker has a general idea of the type of passwords being used. To defend against dictionary attacks, cybersecurity best practices recommend using strong, complex passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA), and enforcing account lockouts after a certain number of failed login attempts.
