The gentleman that takes off his hat for the camera at 7.52 minutes is my grandfather's brother Fred mortimore . At one time he was chairman of the teignmouth council.
I've shared this with my cousin. She is a Mancunian by birth but moved down to Teignmouth in her teens as her parents were relocating there - at about the time this would have been filmed. She is still there now, married a local and had a family. I've shared this lovely footage with her - it brings back so many memories. Thank you :)
Loved it! Thank you. At the council offices I spotted Ron Doel, Sam Dowsing, Donald Sharpe (Mr Teignmouth) Marjorie Line. Fred Mortimore. Arthur Bladon was Chairman of TUDC from 1965-69 which provides a time frame.
I love old films showing everyday life like this, a real time capsule. In the Council car park between 7:30-7:40, there's two cars, a Wolseley and a Volvo with suffix "C" numberplate registrations which would place this film no earlier than 1965.
There is a red R/H drive Renault 16 car in a few shots . These were not introduced to the U.K. market until the autumn of 1965 . Also the Christmas trees adorning the shops and pubs and the cold weather clothing people are wearing in some shots does suggest that we are in Christmas 1965 . It seems it’s a mix of two films where people are wearing clothes for spring and summer . So I think we are looking here at the spring/summer of 1966 too as the C registered cars from 1965 do look well weathered and no D registered cars are in any of the shots
I would estimate this film having been made in the mid sixties judging from thr vehicles, there is a newish Renault shown outside the council office, introduced into the UK around 1966 - 1967. I recognise the landlord at the London Inn in Shaldon from holidays taken in 1970 - 1971
Thankyou . I'll show this to a couple of people l know . Mike , whose parents ran the London lnn and Chris whose father may be one of the gentlemen attending the council meeting . And l had many games of snooker with Arthur and he was a regular in my mothers pub , the Royal Standard (Now a block of flats )
I grew up I. The London Inn. It’s my mum and dad behind the bar. My sister worked for Mr Howard in his solicitors office. Can see my grandads Morris Minor in the car park.
@@michaelparker5510 one of the things I really enjoyed was seeing all the old cars. Frank Howard did a fine job of capturing so much of teignmouth. He must have had a lot of fun being a cinematographer. These old films are absolute treasures.
@@simonhoward8836 Hello Simon! Lovely to hear from you. This video sent me off on a nostalgic trip down memory lane and I was wondering if Frank had taken any films on the trips to the Norfolk Broads that we went on. Auntie Joan had plenty but who knows where they have gone. It would be lovely to get copies if he had. Hope you are well. Cheers Jackie
Looks like the lucky guy with the mk 2 jag was 30 plus years ahead of his time ; he was ready to walk away after shutting the door, when he realised he didn’t have remote locking …….
What a superb film - complete with pub scenes. Amazing to hear sound on 8mm. Whilst the music is good, is there any chance of uploading again just with the authentic sound alone?
good point, I didn't realise UA-cam was adding those links. I've moved the timing so they don't come on until the very end now so hopefully you get to see a bit more...
Amazng how modern life and more money has destroyed our towns, I was there last week and it is a despertate place. Most of the shops are closed, the hotels are boarded up and trying to find a decnt place to get lunch was impossible. Sadly the fat cats at the councils who promoted out of town shopping and the greenies who want cars banned form towns have all contributed to this. Teinmouth is not alone I grew up in Bournemouth and the transition from wealthy bustling seaside town to a ghetto for drug dealers, gangs of migrant theives and drunken students has been allarming.

Hi Una, that's really lovely to hear - glad you've enjoyed it :)
Thank you for this wonderful memory of how Teignmouth looked when i was growing up .
It breaks my heart to see how far we have fallen, equally, it does me good to reminisce. Liked and subscribed.
Fantastic to see the back beach, quay, Morgan & Giles, dawlish road, train station - brilliant

Wow. That brought back many memories. Thank you for sharing.
Latest Car registration plates (several) I spotted were "C" at the end denoting August 1965 onwards, so I would guess summer of 1966?

I go down the back beach most days with the dog, it seems nothing changes except fashions and cars. Everything is the same almost.
Thank goodness those have changed! Cars and fashion then were awful.
This was truly beautiful to watch 💌
Hello Elaine how’s life
Wonderful. Thank you.
Young Tom cruise lookalike in the pub at 8.15 its image of him
Exactly what I thought!!
Lovely film❤️
Just loved this x
8 minutes 55 seconds at the end of this film is Mrs Mathews, Head Mistress of West Lawn Secondary Modern School Teignmouth. Those were the days.
Nice to see Tom Cruise having a drink with the locals (8:35-8:40)
you're not the first person to have noticed that.... perhaps Tom Cruise is a time traveller?
Crikey! You're not joking! He IS Tom Cruise!

Haha! I notice that too!
I spotted him too. Well, he has been in an awful lot films.....🤣

Yes. We have a new 5K scanner, so I was thinking about rescanning and re-uploading in 4K
Brings back great memories , how do you remove the notices of other videos from the last few seconds ,it covers people I would like to see?

Once a tip always a tip
too much shake on your camera.
Pointless criticism.
