Fantasia looks incredible, but don't be fooled. The controls are a sloppy mess and the game is inordinately hard, especially for a kids' title. Too bad, really - Fantasia should have had a better game.
alxxpspqr For sure, it was a huge disappointment. It verged on pissing me off tbh lol. By 1991 most games had endings that were better than the NES's oh-so-common one-screen ones. That bs handshake was hard won, for sure.
Well, the game (Fantasia) was developed by Infogrames, the same guys who botheched River City Ransom and renamed Final Mission as Action in New York (Still better than S.C.A.T).
One of the most poorly-programmed games I’ve ever seen. I think I remember the instruction manual actually saying something like, “if something weird or unexpected happens, it’s because anything can happen in a dream!” Good save, guys.
Yeah, the programming is very poor. For example, there is a special jingle that's meant to be played when you die with no lives left (you can find it in the Sound Test), but you can never hear it in-game due to the sloppy programming.
I think this is probably the first time I've seen anything past level 2. lol A funny story... back in the day I used to have Castle of Illusion, albeit via a pirated cart (these were [and still are] super common over here in Argentina) that for whatever reason had a label for Fantasia instead. The amusing part comes in when sometime after I got that, I see that my cousin, who at the time lived a few blocks away from my house, had an also pirated copy of Fantasia... with a Castle of Illusion label. It was odd, although I believe we had purchased said games from the same store, so it kinda makes sense.
Yeah lol, those pirates were funny as hell. I had a pirate cartridge of a beta version of "Daffy Duck in Hollywood" with a "Daffy Duck: The Marvin Missions" sticker on it, a game that didn't even exist on the Mega Drive lol.
I beat it when i was 12. It was probably due to the fact that Genesis games were expensive and since i was stuck with this crap, i had the mindset that i was going to at least beat it...and i eventually did.
i loved castle of illusion and finished it, so i got fantasia. ended up giving up on it after a while, not fun. i think i got to the jungle stage and it became a chore to go any further.
This game was insanely hard. Even as a little 6 year old gamer who could get all chaos emeralds in all Sonic games and generally beat any game put in front of me, this one I struggled with the most. Just take a look at the last level for example. You can't even tell what is a safe platform to jump on most of the time.
Absolutely. As a kid I beat Aladdin and The Lion King on Difficult but I could never even finish this game. I once almost got to the "final boss" (if we can call it that, lol) and died, I'm pretty sure I cried lol.
This game is the literal definition of "we have Mickey Mania at home" Also the underwater music at 03:00 is straight out of Stimpy's Invention. In terms of both style and crappiness.
This Game has a really dark vibe. I remember playing this Game with the jaw tight and My throath completely closed . Mickey's spirit, Hell's Trip, Some kinda Halloween stage, black pteranodons, weird shit.

I remember finding out you could hold Down to kill enemies... after months of playing :) It was a god damn revelation lmao. Before that I was puzzled how the game's attract mode/demo made it look like it you could bounce on the enemies, with a little jingle and all. I think I made it to world 3 with spells and just dodging enemies lol.
Believe it or not, this was one of my first video games. I'm genuinely surprised it didn't put me off completely, but at the same time I wish it had succeeded. It wouldn't be until Kingdom Hearts 3DS that we'd see Fantasia represented correctly in video game form.

Some of the only games not to use this logo were most Sega Master System games and every Electronic Arts game for Sega Genesis (including EA Sports games as well). But one EA Genesis game that contains the logo is Shaq Fu, while Baku Baku Animals, Bonkers Wax Up!, Daffy Duck in Hollywood, Double Dragon, Lemmings, Sonic Blast, Streets of Rage, Ultimate Soccer and Virtual Fighter Animation were the only Sega Master System games that contain the logo. The logo can be also seen on EA Game Gear games. It is generally left intact in most re-releases of Sega games of the time period like on Wii Virtual Console re-releases of Genesis games.
Am I missing something? I've got this cartidge as part of a megadrive bundle... but in my version jumping on things doesn't kill them, it hurts my character instead... making it EVEN harder???
I believe like in Castle of Illusion, you have to hold the down direction on the D-Pad while you're jumping. This will make Mickey stick his rear out, and bounce off the enemy. Just jumping on them normally will hurt you.
You gotta hold the down button when in mid air to kill with the jump. When i was a kid i had the same problem, i beat the game until the world 3 where is literally impossible to continue without knowing that. This game is so bullshit
I can find a lot of information on GEMS (Genesis Editor for Music and Sound Effects), but little of the release date on it besides a nebulous "1991". I have to assume it was made available after this game started development, and at a point where rewriting the music was a logistical impossibility. Asssuming the info presented on the game's Wikipedia page is legit, we at least know who to blame (Sega) for wanting to adapt an orchestral-centric film on the Mega Drive and the YM2612. It goes without saying that the soundchip's strengths lay elsewhere. It's kind of a pity that over the years there's been little interest of a Fantasia ROM hack to address the wonky moving platform code, sporadic enemy spawning, accidentally bugged-out music on losing all lives, clunky musical loops, and a general musical rewrite. It's understandable, mind - who'd want to go through all that effort for what's still a fairly middling 20 minute experience at the end of the day? It's just a pity the original devs didn't have enough time originally, and never really got the chance for a do-over either. Almost makes me wonder where the staff all went from here.
I am romhacking this game. I already fixed the tanky controls, but I am having an issue with bouncing on the enemies, because Mickey now bounces by default on all objects he can. I'm probably going to make it so you have to press Down if you DON'T want to bounce.
Why so many people hate this game,as a kid i always love playing this game, the graphic seems good to me,i never beat this game as a child but i go to the final level, and its fun to play, especially the secret and hidden dungeon
Holy shit!!! I never made it past the last faery!!! I didn't knew I had to kill all creatures!!! I was so close to finish this game!! OMG!! I remember everything so vividly, even after 25+ years! Thanks bro!

I thought I never made it past level one, but I remember almost every level from this video, except last two. This game as creepy as I remember. I don’t know maybe it’s because I never saw Fantasia.
Fun fact about this game's horrendous remixes of the movie's soundtrack: When reversing the audio and then converting it to a midi, the download link will redirect you to a video titled *GHOSTTOWNWALK_0000.avi* to anyone who understands the reference - don't worry, that video is fake.
This is the definition of pain, i hate this game to pieces, and would'nt be playing It again If not tô honor my grandma Memories by playing the games she had when alive
Wow..takes me back to those years I played over and over to win this game....my eldest sis was so good at it I see her as the only one possible to win this incredibly difficult game.
I don't understand something, perhaps someone can explain it. I played this game as a child and I remember it very well, as far as the first two levels go (inside the castle then outside) but then I remember going straight from that to the one around 13:00 where you climb up plants. I then remember only the last level being the hell one, and me and my father were stuck there. However, as much as those memories are certain, I just don't remember the rest at all as if I'd never played those. Coming from a third world country, we had what I think was a counterfeit genesis because a lot of the consoles were not originals there, and I think the game might have been too. Is it possible that those games were edited and shortened to fit on smaller cards or something?
Huh, interesting. That would be very surprising. I'm definitely not aware of any multicarts with Fantasia on them, let alone butchered out of levels. It's possible though.
Fantasia, one of the most ambitious projects from Walt Disney Studios Animation, with some of the greatest animated sequences of some of the most recognizable classical music of all time, had one game on the Sega Genesis with some of the WORST MUSIC EVER PRODUCED!!!!!!!!!!! HOW DO YOU MESS UP THE MUSIC FROM FANTASIA IN A FANTASIA GAME?!?!?!?!?! BTW: Please don't blame the inferior music capabilities on the Sega Genesis this time, because Mickey Mania, Castle of Illusion and World of Illusion were on the same console, and those games had music that sounded infinitely better. WHAT HAPPENED HERE?!?!?!?!
I wonder why they couldn't include a level based on the "Ave Maria" segment. Maybe this was due to the fact that it was paired with "Night on Bald Mountain" segment.
After I watched this video, I realised as a kid, even though I tried and played really hard, I never passed it more than 10-20% of the whole game... The devs were seriously cruel xD But that music in the intro gave me SO MUCH NOSTALGIA.
From what I can tell, Mickey's spirit has gone to the dream world, but if he runs out of health he's ejected from the world and sent back to his body, for a very rude awakening!
I may be alone here, but I LOVED the game. Yea, it took me quite some time to get used to the controls, but I actually liked how the heavy sorcerer clothing was applied to Mickey's movements. And again, yea, it was really hard to master the controls but once you get used to it, the game flows quite nicely. You may say that such learning curve is boring and unnecessary for your taste, and that's ok. But I enjoyed how the game urges you to take it seriously. You cannot play it recklessly. Even Castle of Illusion allows you to be reckless. I got so carried away by the easiness of COI's gameplay that Mizrabel killed me multiple times cause I didn't know how to take her seriously LOL. And honestly, even for todays standards, I think Fantasia is gorgeous.
It was an interesting concept at the very least. Too bad they didn't really make it work. Also, the plant level has the Pastoral Symphony and the Greece level has the Nutcracker suite? For shame. But I must give props for the Night on Bald Mountain level. The only thing that would have made it better is if it had a final battle against Chernabog.
Fun fact: an old Infogrames developer revealed a few years ago that Fantasia on Genesis was released prematurely and that's why the controls are so janky and why Mickey has such an awkward jump.
I remember playing this as a kid.....good lords this was brutal and I've never beaten it.....I wasn't even sure I had all the faffing musical notes for crap's sake!!!! And after seeing the ending for this, it was like 'Well, that was a waste of time! Not getting that back anytime soon!!'
Holy crap, the last couple of levels in this game look like they were cobbled together in a few days. How did Sega think this was okay to release in this state?!
Fantasia looks incredible, but don't be fooled. The controls are a sloppy mess and the game is inordinately hard, especially for a kids' title. Too bad, really - Fantasia should have had a better game.

Wow..takes me back to those years I played over and over to win this game....my eldest sis was so good at it I see her as the only one possible to win this incredibly difficult game.
22:20 I know this music! It's Mussorgsky, Night on the Bald Mountain (1867), just as at the start of 2nd level of Earthworm Jim!
Amazing Gameplay, Buetiful music, oh my god, top 2 Genesis game.
Yessssss 7:00
@@cyclone6976Ahh yes the Beautiful shades of shits and grays, no grey just needed a ryhme it’s just pure vomitshit
5:30 Even the DOORKNOB from Alice in Wonderland is in this game????
I was 6 when i played this game and i never beat the game...bringing back good memories though! Thanks for the upload man 👍
I wonder why they couldn't include a level based on the "Ave Maria" segment. Maybe this was due to the fact that it was paired with "Night on Bald Mountain" segment.
That could have been the Air World/Level, right.
After I watched this video, I realised as a kid, even though I tried and played really hard, I never passed it more than 10-20% of the whole game... The devs were seriously cruel xD
But that music in the intro gave me SO MUCH NOSTALGIA.
This game look cool I don't know why it's only for Sega?
I like the music. It is fantastic
I read reviews and it got mostly negative. But what do you guys think who played it?
The Game Over is weird, its like Mickey Died.
Mickey cannot die. Because if he did and Donald took over, Disney may never be the same.
Jeremy Riley I prefer Donald and Oswald (Who was in Universal, though) dough.
You Mean The Intro. There Is No Game Over Screen On This Game.
From what I can tell, Mickey's spirit has gone to the dream world, but if he runs out of health he's ejected from the world and sent back to his body, for a very rude awakening!
I can't tell you the hours of misery this game brought me as a child.
I remember this film you really love this game
Hardest game in my life
I couldn't pass the first level of this game. It was impossible with too less powers.
The original Dark Souls.
How would a Chernabog boss fight function in a game as perpetually flawed and sporadic as this?
Nunca pude pasar el nivel uno :(
7:37 never got past this leg part
Fun fact: an old Infogrames developer revealed a few years ago that Fantasia on Genesis was released prematurely and that's why the controls are so janky and why Mickey has such an awkward jump.
I remember playing this as a kid.....good lords this was brutal and I've never beaten it.....I wasn't even sure I had all the faffing musical notes for crap's sake!!!! And after seeing the ending for this, it was like 'Well, that was a waste of time! Not getting that back anytime soon!!'
Ironically this game is a Fantasia by itself.
Holy crap, the last couple of levels in this game look like they were cobbled together in a few days. How did Sega think this was okay to release in this state?!
That was Al Nielson's doing. He basically green-lit a pre-beta game...
Does anyone else find this creepy? Seriously! 😮
I never really understood this game. Somehow i wasn't able to play it fully. Easiest levels become hard to complete.
I remember saving shoots for late game. That was pain in the ass.
Muito bom não conseguir zerar no meu mega drive, o jogo é muito difícil !
I honestly don’t know how making a game off a concert feature would work.
Graphics are amazing good for today's standards
