The rockies having talented young players and refusing to build around them or attempt to make the team contend? Color me surprised. -20 year rockies fan
Legit surprised the name 'Kris Bryant' wasn't mentioned at all. I think that signing makes the trade even worse because you can't even claim 'salary dump' to justify the shit return when you turn around and pay big money to a lesser third baseman a year later.
Some context for that 2020 season, it's been suggested that Arenado spent most of that shortened season playing through a pretty nasty shoulder injury. Which would explain a lot of his lower numbers.
If he gets a pass, but people don't give Machado the same credit after his nasty ankle Injury in June 2022, where he mostly played through it, still put up great numbers, and out performed arenado in his "best WAR season to date" then I just don't know anymore
Imagine saying that when you have to play the Dodgers and Padres so much, as a well as a mediocre Giants team and an underrated Diamondbacks team. Rockies will almost most likely end up dead last in their division
I still think the main reason the Rockies traded Nolan was because they expected him to opt out so it appeared to the fans that he left and they tried to keep him. However, the pandemic financially crunched teams and Nolan likely pressured Rockies management that would indeed not opt out. So they traded him so they wouldn't have to pay him if he stayed. Unfortunately, the Rockies care more about their public image than winning games
Yeah this video completely ignored that he was leaving whether they traded him or not. All the other teams knew this and had no reason to offer any star players for him.
@ryryshredder148 Honestly that wasn't really the case. They made the playoffs in 2017 and 2018, and 2020 was just wierd for everyone. They still had enough talent to build a winning team before 2021. They had a great rotation with Freeland, Marquez, Gray, and Senzatela, Arenado, story, Blackmon, and a couple promising talents in McMahon, Rodgers, and Lambert. Not all of them worked out obviously, but at the time they were still promising. The rockies also run a huge payroll for a midmarket team, so they could have spent more than they did (owners were doing fine, but the only way to be a billionare is to be a criminal so it's not surprising they all lied I guess). The point is the rockies were at a point where they could absolutely still turn it around if they had wanted to.
What's a little odd about the Goldschmidt trade is that every single player from that trade made the big leagues, but none of them have been great. Luke Weaver and Carson Kelly looked to be the best receptions from that haul, but Weaver struggled with injury and consistency and is now on the Royals (and not doing so hot) while Kelly just had his first major injury cause his starting role to be supplanted by Gabriel Moreno's hot start (who himself was received in a notable deal, but notable for how it looks like an excellent decision for the Diamondbacks). Andrew Young didn't truly pan out, he hit the ball really hard but is now out of the league entirely. The Diamondbacks also received a competitive balance round B pick with the trade (more on that soon). Overall, the biggest Diamondbacks benefit in the long run has been that 1B was cleared up for Christian Walker, who has been an excellent producer with the bat plus being far and away the best defensive first baseman in the league. He's so good defensively that he's the only first baseman in the top 50 of Outs Above Average last year (and has put up excellent career metrics), and more than doubled the second place 1B in that leaderboard. Also, it's really early to tell for sure, but Dominic Fletcher, who the Diamondbacks selected with that Competitive Balance B pick they received, has looked really good in his first couple weeks with the team. Even when he regresses to the mean, Fletcher stands to have good league potential to stick around. The aggregate WAR of Goldschmidt in his STL years is 20.2 and counting. The Diamondbacks trade return gave them 6.5 and counting, but if you add in Christian Walker it becomes 16.5. So it's a heist as far as prospects are concerned unless Kelly and Fletcher start putting up big numbers, but Walker has done a better job than most could have done as a Goldy replacement. As a Diamondbacks fan I'd rather see Paul here still, but everyone's production coming together has made a bad trade more bearable.

Yeah this trade sucked. I still think the Vernon Wells trade was worse, or at least competitive, given the huge $ amount when you adjust for inflation.
I like all your videos, and I just happened to read your pinned comment explaining the repeated gasping before watching…..still couldn’t help but laugh my ass off every time hahaha keep it up
The Cardinals did give up two future elite starters in exchange for two middling seasons from Marcell Ozuna, so this trade may just be a wash when combined with that one.
There's also the Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis for Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Burke Badenhop, and 4 failed prospects where Cabrera outlasts all the MLB players and prospects involved even if Willis was a failure away from Florida.
I wasted 23 years cheering for this sorry excuse for a team! I cheered for them from day one and when they sent Tulo to Toronto (the 2nd worst trade in Rockues history behind Arenado) for basically nothing, I had enough. And then this HORRENDOUS "trade" just solidified my decision to leave Colorado for Boston!
Granted, even though Tatis was a lottery ticket at the time, Shields for Tatis Jr. is already really really bad and is only going to get worse for the White Sox in the coming years as Tatis gets better and better especially with that lineup protection he has in the Padres lineup currently.
Signing Arenado to the extension in the first place was far worse than trading him. Trading him and his under water contract was not a bad move. Also, Montero hit very well in the minors last year.
Hes the greatest player the Rockies have ever had, and he earned every dollar of that $260m. Not sure how it was an 'under water' contract, thats the going rate for superstar position players these days. Machado got more money and he isn't worth half what Nolan is. All hes done since being traded is finish 2nd in MVP voting, go to 3 ASGs, win a SS, 2 GGs and 2 PGs.....Thats more than the entire Rockies franchise combined ffs. So yeah, trading him wasn't a bad move....it was a horrific one.
It was a bad return for sure but I think the intention was there. The Rockies aren’t going to touch the playoffs as long as SF LA and SD are in the same division. A fresh restart like the astros or cubs did isn’t a bad idea. Maybe get lucky on some prospects and top picks
when I heard the news of Arenado going to Saint louis I knew that we were never gonna see the playoffs agian, then they traded Trevor Story and i thought about burning my merch
I think this happens more often than not. I get that new faces need to be brought in to the league and the constant turn over helps with keeping talent on a high level. However this move wasn't a competitive trade at all. It was Colorado trying to pinch pennies and dump salaries and I think MLB needs to start blocking these kinds of moves because all it does is hurt fan bases and only benefit owners. Baseball is so corporatized it's bullshit.
The only logical reason for the move was Arenado saying he wanted out and the cardinals being the team he wanted to go to. He kinda held all the power in this.

Dog your breaths in between sentences are crazy 💀
For a contender for the worst trade in recent MLB history, I'd like to nominate the Shelby Miller-Dansby Swanson trade between the DBacks and Braves
There's also the Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis for Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Burke Badenhop, and 4 failed prospects where Cabrera outlasts all the MLB players and prospects involved even if Willis was a failure away from Florida.
Just would like to point out that at the time of writing this comment, the Cardinals are 12-24. That is all.
Crazy thing about that trade is I literally can’t remember even when it happened hearing any reasonable explanation for the trade lol
insane to me that my man here can pronounce spokane right but has no idea how to say saint louis
Rick Wise? He had a baseball card store here on Beaverton, Oregon. He bought my collection from me for a whopping $60.
Sox trading Betts was pretty lopsided as well
Homie breathes so hard into the mic

Raisel iglesias for Tucker Davidson and jesse chavez is also crazy
I wasted 23 years cheering for this sorry excuse for a team! I cheered for them from day one and when they sent Tulo to Toronto (the 2nd worst trade in Rockues history behind Arenado) for basically nothing, I had enough. And then this HORRENDOUS "trade" just solidified my decision to leave Colorado for Boston!
St. Louis the S is not silent. Your not wrong but you are. If that makes sense lol
Granted, even though Tatis was a lottery ticket at the time, Shields for Tatis Jr. is already really really bad and is only going to get worse for the White Sox in the coming years as Tatis gets better and better especially with that lineup protection he has in the Padres lineup currently.
Yordan Alvarez for Josh Fields will go down as another one of the most lopsided trades
As a cardinals fan it will always be the Ozuna trade
This and the time the A's gave up huston street and Carlos Gonzales for a sharply declining matt holiday are the 2 worst ever trades to be made.
It may not be worse but Marcel Ozuna for Zac Gallen and Sandy Alcantara is close
The WORST modern baseball trade...? The Pirates' Chris Archer trade would like a word...
“Saint louie cardinals”? It’s pronounced lewis cmon man.
Being a Rockies fan is a different existence. Thank God weed is legal in this state.
The #Astros have acquired Cuban minor league IF/OF Yordan Alvarez from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for RHP Josh Fields.
As a Cardinals fan I'll just sit here with a big grin 😁
Two months after this, I believe the Braves/A's trade involving Murphy will go down as the worst. Especially since Pache was already go.
It’s St. Louis not St. Louie
The Pirates trading for Chris Archer was the worst modern trade.
I'm not a Rockies or cardinals fan, but trades such as this are straight up bad for the sport.
mookie betts trade???
Worst trade of the modern era you say? *Nervously laughs in Johan Santana to the Mets*. Twins legit got NEGATIVE WAR from all players in this deal.
It’s not like Johan was much better. Dude’s injuries caught up to him HARD.
@@Gemnist98 true Santana throw out his arm for his no no. But at least he spent more than 2 years with the Mets.
I still think the mookie Betts trade was worse, probably because I'm a red sox fan...
You gotta cut out the breathes in the audio
Breathe
The Josh Donaldson to TOR trade was horrible
It was a bad return for sure but I think the intention was there. The Rockies aren’t going to touch the playoffs as long as SF LA and SD are in the same division. A fresh restart like the astros or cubs did isn’t a bad idea. Maybe get lucky on some prospects and top picks
The NL West is the worst division in baseball, nowhere else to run to if you want to simply stay a bad team forever.
@@Shmuely33 The AL Central and NL Central are far worse divisions
when I heard the news of Arenado going to Saint louis I knew that we were never gonna see the playoffs agian, then they traded Trevor Story and i thought about burning my merch
Story wasn’t traded they let him go in free agency
@@theohenry938 because they're too inept to try to trade anyone of value
The title is wrong. I think this is the best trade in baseball history
For the Cardinals yes one of the Best Trades made in Club History for the Rockies though not so much.
Dudes eating the mic wtf
"St. Louie Cardinals" 😂
absolutely criminal
Who the hell says Saint Louie? Offensive
I’m a suffering pirates fan
chill with the breathing plz
The rockies owners built a new hotel district. That was the sole purpose of the trade. guaranteed return
The Glenn Davis trade was way worse.
Nolan is the major leaguer I want to meet more than anyone. So I can apologize to his face for all the shit I talked about him when he got traded.
Almost any team in the league could have made this trade. My twins could have got him for like 4 of our top 30 prospects
St. Louis uses the Rockies as one of their farm teams.
Seems like a great deal for us
Lets go cards
dude, Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas
1:01 is why i clicked off this video what is that breathing
padres for juan soto might be the worst ever.
Hope you make it tony, see ya hunting season
Idk why so many people focus on the mic stuff. Just watch and enjoy the content 🤷🏻♂️
make a video like this about the Mookie trade
I think this happens more often than not. I get that new faces need to be brought in to the league and the constant turn over helps with keeping talent on a high level. However this move wasn't a competitive trade at all. It was Colorado trying to pinch pennies and dump salaries and I think MLB needs to start blocking these kinds of moves because all it does is hurt fan bases and only benefit owners. Baseball is so corporatized it's bullshit.
St Louie is always funny
The only logical reason for the move was Arenado saying he wanted out and the cardinals being the team he wanted to go to. He kinda held all the power in this.
Worst trade ever? Can I introduce you to Chris Archer?
Silly that anyone thought he would be better than chipper
Mike Schmidt best 3rd basemen of all time? A Rod might have something to say about that
