- Are you looking for some altissimo fingerings for the alto sax? These fingerings have worked on EVERY alto I've ever played, and they are pretty easy to get from one note to the next. Check them out!
Disclaimer - altissimo notes are more about the tongue position than the fingerings, so if you have the right fingerings, but your tongue is not up high enough, the notes will not come out. Working on tongue positioning with the correct fingerings!
If you'd like a step by step course on learning and perfecting your altissimo range - check out my Sax School! You'll be squealing out your high notes in no time at all with the Ultimate Altissimo Course.

Try the Bb bis fingering combined with bottom side key and high f# key if you got one
For what note? Hmmm, I've never tried the Bis key for altissimo.
@@ScottPaddockG. Easiest it’s ever came out for me.
@@ScottPaddockit's an easy and very stable fingering, but can be difficult in technical passages
He went disgustingly high and still sounded crisp and amazing
This is very, very easy. And I was tired for so long. Thank you very much Scott.
Thank you!!!! This is exactly what I was looking for. I’ve been trying to figure out how to make my sax go that high for ages!!!

Thanks man I didn’t even know I could play that high on the baritone saxophone
It’s an alto
You can play the same notes on the bari…
@@spexyhalo4343 Ik but it’s an alto
Sure

For tenor, G has always been impossible- only getting it twice ever until I tried using
1 (left hand)
Side F# (right hand)
Easiest fingering ever, came out consistently first try
The other ones are a little different from how I would play them on tenor (for tuning reasons) but should transfer pretty well
Yeah, G on the tenor is all over the place and changes from horn to horn. Here's a video I did on it: ua-cam.com/video/L4Ea1gA9czc/v-deo.html
G histroically the hardest out of all of them
@@ScottPaddock do you have a recommended fingering for C Melody?
Mine and I’m pretty sure all of them don’t have an F# key
Thanks Scott really helpful hope you & your family are well your friend Paul from Manchester UK 🇬🇧🎷
Thanks Paul!
Great one
Thankyou so much... it means a lot for me to reach altissimo
Congrats!
Hey Scott! Thank you so so much for this video!! I am a jazz alto sax player and I’m around intermediate level, and after seeing this video on altissimo, I hacked away at practicing for a couple days and can play a G, G#, and an A in the range! Really appreciate you!
Awesome! Congrats ✌
The video I've needed for months... blessed to finally find it, a true real one indeed 🙏
Thank you so much for sharing this
It was just what I needed
I’m a skilled saxophonist and this was very easy and thank you so much for showing the fingerings on the chart , this is what made it easy
Bravo!!!❤❤❤
I've really neglected the altissimo range because most players I like (Art Pepper, Sonny Stitt, Charlie Parker) seemed to use altissimo sparingly or not at all.
This vid is a great starting place to include it in my practice now, really appreciate the vid!
Hey Mac, yeah the common and heavy use of altissimo is definitely a more recent thing. You don't hear it a lot in the bebop or cool jazz eras. When fusion & smooth jazz hit, it started becoming a regular part of playing the sax. Now, it's almost a mandatory part. I've done a few other ALTISSIMO videos on UA-cam that give you some great pointers on approaching that range of the sax. If you want a super comprehensive step by step approach, I've also got a course on altissimo in my Sax School. Have fun working on those high notes, but remember to practice them sparkingly as the altissimo is a serious lip killer!
@@ScottPaddockmore rediscovered than recent. It was heavily used in the very early and demonstrated by Adolphe Sax. It fell out of favor until Rascher advocated for it and then spread into other genres
@@joshuahuff607 I didn't know that! Thanks for sharing.
@@ScottPaddock Yup! A lot of the very early players were clarinetists who were already familiar with that range from clarinet.
@@ScottPaddock also, The Rashcher altissimo book was copyrighted in 1941, so it had already started gaining traction a good bit before that. In one of the books/biographies of Coltrane, it said he had started practicing it in his teens
Excellent ,Excellent From Montreal Canada Claudio
Altissimo is one of those things that is unique to each sax player. For when I would play altissimo, I would just use the top note to play D, and curve my mouth to go to the octave above that.
Yeah, you were getting an overtone, which is another way to get altissimo notes.
God Bless you Man!!! I been trying to figure this out
Thanks, I'll get right on this!
Thanks! I’m going to try this on my alto and see if it works!
did it?
Good luck! Let me know how it goes
Excellent information
I needed this. Thanks🎷🗿
😁😁
I learnt so much here thank u
Thanks Scott Paddock
You're welcome!
Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you. This is a break through...only took 30 years....lol
I’ve always used that fingering for G but when I told a recent private instructor about it he said there was no point to having the low Eb key held down. Personally I’ve tried it both ways and it just pops out easier and more consistently with it down so I’m glad to see this video confirming that fingering is a real thing
Yeah, the note comes out without the Eb key, but that key dials in the tuning as well. But when it comes to altissimo, there are no right and wrong fingerings, it just depends on who's playing, what gear they are using, and what comes out of the horn.
What do you use for Eb my man? I've been digging these, incorporating them into my performance of steven galante's saxsounds iii tomorrow.
Just updating this, I just over blew palm F#. Practice overtones :)
Good job🎉🎉🎉
thank so much this helped a lot

❤Super.. yo estoy empezando hace poco y que buen me ayudan estás clacesitas.
i didn't evek know this can go this far
Just tried these. They are good.
Glad they worked for you!!
I use the exact same fingering for both altissimo c and d! It’s a bit finicky, but I think I can have trust in my intonation 😅
Yeah, once you get up that high, it's 100% about tongue position!
I like this
1971 bundy alto sax
Oh Scott, you are really helpful for me. I am finding these keys but you cleared note by note. Thanks 🙏 But C note i don't understand. Please explain
thought we was about to play some mf doom
Nice 👍
Id recommend working on intanation and looking at other fingerings if you are learning altissimo. As you highrt on the work the less pressure you want to have on your lower jaw and also having the correct voicing for the note and learning your overtones will help a bunch.
This was a 60 second Short on Altissimo Fingerings, not a full how-to tutorial. I cover this topic completely step by step in my Sax School and have also done several full-length tutorials on my UA-cam channel 😀😀
Altissimo was always very interesting to me as how can such instrument have such a huge range spanning over 5 octaves (low Bb to C# with the altissimo) but now i'm realising that it's so squeaky 😂😂
Wooo
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Sick
THAT IS A DAMN BEAUTIFUL SAX WHERE IS IT FRKM
P. Mauriat 67RX
beautiful sax what brand and model is it?
we have the same sax
How do you get up to higher notes classically, for example I’m playing the Ibert Concertino and I’m trying to get up to the slrissimo E and F and can’t figure out how to get it
Scott are the altissimo fingering different for Low A baritones?
Yeah, bari is it's own animal when it comes to altissimo
Can you make the same vidéo for ténor sax ?
Yeah, it's on the list, it will come out either this week or next 🎷
Learning sax would be cool, I already play clarinet so it wouldn't be the hugest learning curve
Hello . Thanks for this amazing video. How can I practice it every day to play all notes correctly?
Step by step and just work on 1 note at a time. I have a whole course dedicated to altissimo in my Sax School if you want to check it out: www.scottpaddocksaxschool.com
Thanks man really appreciate the vid. What is your sax setup??

Can you do tenor and soprano?
Thanks man now my dogs are crazy
Haha!!! My dog always used to try and sing along.
Can you tell in which scale is this please?
Please tell me all about
This is hard for me, i can't even breath. 😅
It’s not that hard at all.
😅😅
I dont know how to place my fingers for e because i am a beginner and i need it to play twinkle twinkle little star for school help me please
Hey guys! Just want to ask. Is there any difference in mousepieces? Cause I couldn’t reach it on my mousepeice S90 SELMER, but can do it on others in the sax shop.
So is anyone knows what is the best balance mousepiece for jazz + altissimo notes?
Thanks!
Is it different mouthpieces if it is tell me the mouthpiece I need that or if highest is Theo wanne
Is it the same for tenor?
@ScottPaddock, This is Exactly what I’m looking for! Is it safe to say that the reed strength and brand makes it easier to get into this range?
It doesn’t really matter the brand or reed strength. You just have to use the right gear for you… But altissimo on a soft dead reed is tough.
@@Jaujau933 can you elaborate more about air flow Thanks 😊
굿
What brand of sax are you playing?
Is that your main horn or do you have several others? What’s your go to sax?
P. Mauriat 67RX - that's the only alto I play.
What do you use for the first altissimo F#?
Is it the same for bari?
try the octave key, the key above the 1st finger key, and the middle finger key.
❤❤
how are you playing this?
funnily enough i use your altissimo C fingering as my altissimo D fingering
Yeah, it all depends on the setup and the way you are putting air through the sax.
Why is C always a difficult note to get in tune?
That’s a funny looking instrument
Can I try these fingerings on my soprano
Those don't work on soprano for me.
1 3 1 3 split fingering for G works
Why I can't do it😢
Does it work on bari? If not can you make a seperate video for bari? Also great content:)
Thanks! No, there's fingerings only work on alto.
@@ScottPaddockThese fingerings work for me on bari
They might work, but are they in tune?? Cause I find that A fingering is terrible sharp, like all the time. I prefer 1,2,3,4 TA TC TF. And for Bb, I prefer just 3 followed by only C1 for B. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
what size reed do u use?
2.25 Legere American Cut
@@ScottPaddockis it better to use a smaller reed for higher notes? I use a 3.5 vandorin (idk if I spelt that correct lol)
@@magirehedge7585 altissimo notes actually come out easier on a harder reed, but you shouldn't change your gear for altissimo (or high notes). Use the reed that feels the best over the range of your saxophone. 3.5 is pretty stiff.
Does this also work on tenor cause y know they both have the same fingerings
Hey! No, the tenor altissimo fingerings are different, and in my experience, they aren't always universal from one tenor to the next. I will be doing a video on my tenor altissimo fingerings in the near future. Thanks!
@@ScottPaddock alright, thanks
@@ScottPaddock I am looking forward to the tenor ones. I've been using the Rascher fingerings on my alto for decades, but some of SirValorSax fingerings on the tenor.
GREAT INFO cause we're always trying to get that note that reaches the heaven.... FYI R.I.P DAVID SANBORN💔
Mine sounds way lower also my teach said G is al 3 left
I have an alto saxophone but I didn't even know I had the high C# and D
Please do tenor sax🥺
I'm currently traveling with only my alto, but when I get home, I'll do the tenor version.
This takkes a lot of practice to have a good stream of sound
Do b falt
Shut upppp I’ve tried so hard to get to altissimo and got taught other fingerings and it was soooo difficult like I’ve never really hit any especially G and this has helped sooo much but when I get to the C, C# and D I have to put my A and F finger down aswell
Teaching altissimo fingerings are tough, because they can vary from gear to gear, but these fingerings tend to work for me on every alto. Glad that you were able to get some notes out!
What brand alto saxophone you playing?
P. Mauriat 67RX
What mouthpiece do you have?
Barkley Brazil Kustom Pop 7 blue
Rip playing that D on my vintage
Your C fingering plays a D on every alto sax I've tried.
Awesome thanks 🎶
👍👍👍
What brand it saxophone and moundpiece?
P. Mauriat 67RX Influence / Barkley Brazil Kustom Pop 7 Blue
I recently found that my alto (Keilwerth ST90) can play a perfectly in-tune palm Eb if I use the standard altissimo G (front F) fingering; can still get the G just fine too, it just depends on voicing. Was wondering if anyone else has noticed this. It's stuffy on my Yamaha tenor, but still a really useful alternate fingering for something fast.
I’ll have to give it a try.
1-3,1-3 is more stable for c in my opinion. Then the same palm keys as you go up.
I'll have to give it a try! Although, with tongue position, I can turn that C into about 5 different notes 🤣😂
I just can’t get the sound right, it’s low pitched…😢
Sheeshhhhhh there is alot to press-
Yeah, crazy fingerings up in the altissimo!
@ScottPaddock frfr I'm gonna get a saxophone and I realize how hard it's gonna get for me to learn lmfao!
