      duuuuuuude yes watching her have to pretend like that as she burned a satirical effigy of her best friend and regret or even just think about what might have happened if she went with elphaba was so poignant.

    Ariana, a soprano, spent an entire year training her voice to be more operatic than pop. She truly meant it when she said she never wanted anything as badly as this role. She has dreamt of it since the age of 10.

      I remember when Linda Ronstadt did that back in 1980 for “Pirates of Penzance”. I’m just as impressed with Ariana as I was with Linda. Any artist whose vocals improve so noticeably as they mature gets a 👍🏻 from me. Folks think it’s easy but singing is very complex

      But all the coloratura soprani I‘ve worked with have no breathy tone and Ariana has it in every part of her voice. She did a great job anyway.

    • @LamHoang-dp6ui
      @LamHoang-dp6ui 2 дні тому +3

      @@Oberon90 Ariana is a pop singer, and she's very used to sing airy vocals + whistle tone, so it was probably because her muscle memories. You probably know that when you sing that high in your register, muscle memories will affect how you sound significantly. Or, maybe, she just did that on purpose because it sounds more soothing to the ear than a fully compressed head voice, and she didn't need to project her voice like theater singers.
      I like how she didn't try to be exactly like an opera singer though. She did her own version of the song with airy vocals, runs, riffs and whistle note. It sounded like Glinda, and it also sounded like Ariana.

      @@silkspectre7979 Opera singer here- opera is more so a genre of entertainment than it is a singing style. You wouldn't sing a Rossini aria in the same vocal styling as you would a Purcell, for example. The same logic would apply to musical theatre. People may have an idea that comes to their heads when they hear "musical theatre singing," but Carousel would sound quite bizarre sung with the vocal techniques used in Rent, and vice versa. Wicked is wonderful because it intentionally features roles that span in range and style more than many other musical theatre shows do. Glinda, originally played by opera singer Kristin Chenoweth, was written to be and has always been performed in what some in the vocal world call "legit singing." That is, essentially, a more classical style associated with opera- with purer vowels, a diaphragmatically supported head voice, and less of the chesty or sometimes nasally buzz associated with belting techniques. All that yapping through with, I see no reason why not to refer to her singing here as opera except for the fact that Wicked isn't an opera (that in itself is arguable, but that's a separate conversation topic from this). Perhaps you associate opera with a taller, darker tone with heavy vibrato, but that's simply not Ariana's voice type. She's probably a light lyric soprano, so she's always going to have a softer, lighter, brighter sound as she soars through her upper register.

    • @PensadorProfundo42
      @PensadorProfundo42 14 днів тому +10

      @@xhappyponyxwasmyoldname1395 the BREATHINESS in the tone is just terrible from an operatic pov, but fine from a pop singing stance. People are so used to Ari’s pop style of singing that her taking a role that’s synonymous with Kristin, people are going to automatically say she’s just trying to do a Kristin voice. Let us be glad
    Let us be grateful
    Let us rejoicify that goodness could subdue
    The wicked workings of you-know-who
    Isn't it nice to know
    That good will conquer evil?
    The truth we all believe'll by and by
    Outlive a lie
    For you and -
    And Goodness knows
    The Wicked's lives are lonely
    Goodness knows
    The Wicked die alone
    It just shows when you're Wicked
    You're left only
    On your own
    Goodness knows
    She died alone
    Woe to those (Woe to those)
    Who spurn what Goodnesses
    They are shown
    No one mourns the Wicked
    Good news!
    No one mourns the Wicked!

      @@arc7375 I'm an opera singer and I don't see the need to make a negative comment or gatekeep. If this person enjoyed or was perhaps even moved by Ariana's performance, wouldn't that be a good thing? Ought not we welcome more people into the art via whichever avenue may be most accessible to them? There's no reason why the "fine arts" have to be kept on this pretentious, classist pedestal with a big fat sign saying "plebeians: don't touch." If you really cared about the validity of their comment, you might suggest who they should listen to next, a la: "if you enjoyed her performance, I'd recommend checking out x in y! They're fantastic, one of my favorites." Instead, you chose to make a pass of personal superiority and failed to elaborate on your point. Also, from a technical standpoint, Miss Grande killed it, so perhaps you just hate her more than you love opera?

       i don’t think they were trying to rain on the person’s parade, i think they were simply just adding their own opinion, and also were probably taken aback by the word “unmatched”.. i love ariana & i know little of operatic history but i _do_ know, this isn’t the most superb operatic performance ever. i think both opinions may come off as extreme but they are entitled to those. and it sucks that people can’t simply state their opinion without it being labeled as “hating”.

    I really admire her commitment to making this the best version of Wicked it could have possibly been. Even as a pop icon, she allowed herself to become a working part of the vision, and not the focal point, if that makes sense. From her acting to her vocals you can tell she loves the original version, and probably grew up watching theater bootlegs like a lot of us. Even her opt-ups are choices Broadway Glindas do as special little treats on good nights. I am blown away and have a whole new appreciation for her as an artist.

    Even though the song is called "No one mourns the wicked," I feel like this is, in a way, a tribute to Alphaba's memory. Rather than forgetting her, everyone sings about her with intense emotion. I feel like this is Glinda's way of mourning and honoring her friend, especially when she poses the question about being born wicked or having wickedness thrust upon you. She doesn't answer the question. She gives context and humanizes Alphaba. She tells her story so we can determine for ourselves what it means to be wicked.
