- An Alitalia Cargo MD-11 carrying toxic materials from Milan to Miami makes an emergency in Boston after the pilots reported a strange smell in the aircraft. The subsequent investigation reveals that the odor was not due to a chemical spill, but rather to a 5 ton load of onions the plane was transporting.
Recorded on liveatc.net
Boston John is a winner...a great controller with a sense of humor...it seems like you can tell the temperament of an air traffic controller just by listening to his voice, and if were I checking onto his frequency, I would assume he is in a good mood...this video made me laugh out loud...also glad to hear the Air Italia landed safely, no matter how ridiculous the emergency.
"Cooooolgan..." i had to LOL
Btw i just got my PPL here in italy and passed the TEA exam and you have no idea how useful are this videos to practice aeronautical conversations, ty.
Boston John, come back ! We miss you !
no problem, always glad to help. take care and peace out!
nobody can beat Boston John, it's only him and that controller at amsterdam, I think they're the best
Now I'm curious how to find the Amsterdam dude... 11 years later. 😂
well it may be funny, but imagine if the pilots had dismissed the smell, and rather than it being the onions it was the chems, than you probably wouldve read a different story than onions, you wouldve of read of a plane crash.
I got so entertained with Boston John that I completely forgot about the emergency, until I read the smell came from the 5 tons of onions. Glad it was a happy ending.
What kind of onions are valuable enough to ship air freight?
You'd be surprised what's shipped through air freight. Let me tell you something, the company I work for ships flowers on their flight almost on a daily basis. When I started working there I thought the exact same thing as you :-)
+headhunterke well their flowers! Theyre expensive specially the exotic ones and need to be sold fresh.
Onions though hehe
+krelshell4 I know, but everything is shipped by air. And not just fancy, expensive and exotic things. Even cheap fish etc. Can you imagine, shipping fish to an island that has a rich fishing history?
The craziest thing I've seen being shipped were bees. Yes, bumblebees. Nothing is too cheap/expensive to airfreight.
i loooooooooooove when they speak in spanish... how cool is that!!!! love the acent..for me who actually speak spanish is very nice to hear those guys talking like that
Moral: Check the shipping papers... lol!
He even says FIFE instead of FIVE - always correct language.
Very good controller.
Boston John EVERYWHERE ! Glad to hear him!
It should be reported on the cargo manifest exactly what they are transporting. Unless someone forgot to inform the pilots they were carrying onions... minced too.
WizardOfOdds you apparently missed the part where they had toxic cargo on the manifest. Many times these toxic materials are laced with an onion or garlic like smell to give an olfactory warning to a leak. If I were the pilot in this case I would have erred on the side of caution and assumed that onion smell was the toxic cargo. The more you know.
Way to go Boston John, like your style.. Karlos, Doncaster ATC, UK.
Couldn't agree more!!!
That Traffic Controller, is the best!
Hasta la vista!
Boston John is awesome.
it's the alt calibration meaured in inches HG. it depends on the atmospheric situation. STD is 29.92
it's Boston John! Hasta La Vista!
speedbird 14G fly runway heading contact boston dep.
Godspeed
gotta love that
It's nice to know these cargo jets are carrying toxic materials next to the minced onions. Nice Controller though I don't know if I could talk to him, mi espanol es no muy bueno.
I guess having MOCHA John on the main BOS frequency sort of lightens the mood for the smelly onions occupying the .725 Skyways frequency.
Notice that Boston John also pronounces his FIVES correctly as FIFES.
Top man in my book!
UN2811 is a "toxic solid, organic, n.o.s."... So how do you figure it's selenium oxide? IMP code is RPB, class 6.1...
crazy ATC
5:11 the pilot says "we're carryng 50 kilo of UN 2811",
check wikipedia for details
in easy to understand terms: they tell you an altimeter setting and if you don't set the airplane's altimeter to match what you are told, your instruments may show your plane flying higher or lower than it actually is which can obviously cause a crash or other problems. hope that helps. peace!
5 tons of minced onions......that would do it!
Mr. Boston John!
how can a pilot not know what cargo he is carrying?
@737FSPilot yes...the ils procedure is downgraded in non precision approach when GS is not usable
i'd like to hear you ATC
Wow, the woman flying the Jet Blue is a pilot and a terminator fan... how cool is that?
Why are onions being transported in the same vessel as toxic materials?
Boston John's made a cameo on this vid! (y)
fantastic in the final!!!
Yeah Boston John. Just love that man. :)
Is this the ATC who was told to speak English by a pilot after saying hasta la vista in another video?
***** Yeah, I did some research, it's Boston John!
***** he is the famous Boston John, a real flirter. Tell Rodney Dangerfield....
Sodium Oxalate is an ionic compound, therefore it could not fall under "organic toxic"
Is Ken Adams the Boston controller?
how do you record the atc???
Jet Bluuuueeee- I love Boston John. Even there, where an emergency is xD
Boston John is handling departure...
How do you make an ILS Approach without the glideslope? Is it like a non-precision approach?
you're mostly right except for one thing... an oxalate is an ionic compound, so it could never possibly fall under UN2811. Salts are ionic, not organic.
Pilot claimed it was UN2811 they were carrying. MSDS Name: Sodium oxalate.
I can understand them being nervous but mistaking the scent of onions for that?
@tstdesign Thanks.
What is Boston John's last name? I heard he was at San Juan tower now.
What I don't get is why someone would pay international air freight costs to deliver MINCED ONIONS???
Onions turning sour is an emergency in italy.
They're not going to fill the entire airplane with one type of thing. There are probably a bunch of computer parts, etc on board too. They don't put all the onions on one plane then bring in another plane for the computer parts.
Well, I guess you take no chances in a situation like that
Think he is reporting the toxic materials as UN2811 (6.1 Toxic solids, organic, n.o.s.)
all that hassle over onions!? 5 tons of minced onions. hilarious!
Wind 200 at 7... sheeeew that's some wind!
UN2811 could not possibly be Selenium oxide. UN2811 is "organic toxic, not otherwise specified" and selenium oxide is an ionic compound. Therefore it cannot be both organic and ionic, so it couldn't be UN2811.
Does anyone know why they say goodbye in spanish?
It looks like 9L4979 likes Boston John just as much as we do!
5 tons of onions? From what I recall the captain had pallets of 30kg, 20kg and 25kg of some code-number of god knows what on board which was designated the 'toxic material'.
Things aren't designated 'toxic' if theyre 'harmful' or 'corrosive' or 'hazardous' products. If I had been on oxygen for the last 3 hours piloting that aircraft I would be extremely concerned as to what I had initially inhaled before putting my mask on. Fuck knows what it genuinely was, could have been cyanide for all we know
sorry , "godspeed " what does it means?
what is the meanning of "gosspeed "?
Boston John!
Wow. Man Boston Controller got humor.
I might be wrong but what the pilot said sounds more like "UN 28211", which doesn't exist, but UN 2821 is phenol solution.
@aolambros Yes but i was making a point!! It was in context..
that controller sounded like john "jetbluuuuuuuuuuuuuuuue" boston, didnt he?
So.... how is the aroma from a 5 ton load of onions finding its way into a pressurized cockpit?
the entire aircraft is pressurized not just the cockpit
It's ALitalia not AIR Italia, other than that I do agree with you...
Realy cool controller ! Cooooolgan, Jet bluuuuee... thats awesome ! :-)
I love that Boston controller, and one day a Continental 383... xD
Love it! Love the onions! :):) Onions RULE!
From what I hear he says at 5:10 : UN2811
Yeah! But who was speaking was jet Blue and not Alitalia (who only spoke in English). It was playful banter in spanish by americans...
They were carrying disodium oxalate
can u smell onions?
@aolambros Not in the UK sweetheart!!!!!! There is a world outside of the USA you know.....
Oh yeah
they dont
Madonna & Justin Bieber the masterminds behind this...
How do you come up with that proper shipping name? UN2811 is "toxic solid, organic, n.o.s.", hazard class 6.1 IMP Code RPB.
"N.O.S." means "not otherwise specified"... So how do you guys come up with these proper shipping names? You do not know what he's carrying unless you packed it yourselves, only thing you do know: UN2811 toxic solid, organic, n.o.s.!!!
Not all pilots are men ya know!! Hehe I'm a female aviator and i love it!!!!! ;-D
50Kg of UN2811 (Toxic Solid, organic, n.o.s)
Sounds like he said UN two eight twenty one.
ionic, organic? I don't really care, I was just citing what is said in IATA's DGR... And is says: "n.o.s." = not otherwise specified...
@737FSPilot you just fly the plane, it's that easy, just fly it down manually.
Whatever happened to proper PHRASEOLOGY? It sticks out like a sore thumb.
@landmark425 In England we are actually taught how to drive and have the strictest driving test in the world!!!!!!! If you knew ANYTHING about Aviation, then you'd know the MASSIVE difference between being a 'Woman driver' and a female pilot!!! £80,000 and 3 years of training!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hasta la vista baby how cool is that waw
to cool the bosstower!! XD
Jet Bluuuuuuuuuue !
Estos tanos...
@traceynorthernstar yea and you probably fly like you drive
haha nice controller!!
yeah.. i did that once in c-172.. the results wern't good.. lol
Thumbs up for "Cooooolgan 4979"
Cooooooooolgan HAHAH XD loved the controller
Coooooooooooooooolgan.
the jet blue pilot is HOT! lol
LOL boston john!!
Cooooooolgan!
Coooooooooooooooooooooolgan 4979~~
