- "Lie down, stretch, let's run; it's a tank after us," hromadske heard these words as the journalists ran, walked, and crawled to the forward positions of the Ukrainian army near Kharkiv. The Ukrainian military is advancing on the east of Kharkiv.
hromadske returned to the positions of the Kharkiv Territorial Defense, where we were in May. In two months, the military advanced two kilometers to the east and took positions from which they knocked out the Russians.
Both Ukrainian-made artillery and foreign-made artillery are working here now, including the American "three seven" M777 howitzers. Also, Ukrainian aviation is active in this zone. But over the past two months, the situation has also worsened for the Ukrainian military. Although they are moving forward, the Russian artillery is now three times stronger here. The car we left parked had lost its rear window by the time we got back. The shellings here occur every day. As soon as the Russians see the movement of people or cars, they immediately strike there.
Also, the forays of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups have become more frequent. One such group was destroyed by the Kharkiv Territorial Defense together with special forces in the middle of July 2022 near Dementiivka. The Ukrainian army is an army with a very high morale, very democratic internally, where every private knows their value and where there is no comparison to a blunt Russian drill -where fear of the superior is the basis, but this does not mean of course that Ukrainians do not know the concept of duty

I was in the army and had many firefights and close calls during my time overseas and during that time we had reporters join us on a few patrols with that being said I give combat reporters my upmost respect for willingly putting themselves in harms way with nothing more than a camera.

I sure as hell don't respect them. The ones we had to babysit back in 2004 got at least 3 family's killed in a rocket attack because of their north American attitude of "We are the press and are untouchable" "they wont attack us you stupid soldier". We got good intel that they new where the press were holding up and our capt went to talk with them and explain that they need to move back to the camp because they are a target, as are the civilians around them. they stuck their nose up at our capt and said no, later that night we came under attack. the second the sun came out the next day they ran tail between their legs back to the airfield and left the country. Got back to camp a week later and called my folks to see if what they did reach other news outlet back home. not a thing reached the light of day.

I understand and respect your reason as to why you feel the way you do towards them..... now where they the reason behind a couple of my close calls yes absolutely they where, but shrapnel to the face and "holy shit that was fucking close" was as far as it got, but the close calls that the afghan military caused unfortunately did end with a couple of casualties so when I say that I understand I ain't just saying it just to say I truly do understand.

Agreed, not sure if every unit does this but these men are clearly more than just a chain of command, these men are brothers in arms, trust each other and fight like one organism, with respect, care and passion. And that is also most likely why we see Ukraine fend off a much bigger force with such success. And what's even more striking, is how today, 6 months in, these brave men are still keeping their spirits up, still smiling and while in a serious situation every day, still positive, which means despite anything, they have very high morale.

Depending on 2022 drones for aiming like in WWI and WWII era in trench warfare artillery is so unusual. I suppose that it improves firing accuracy at least but makes firing away reveling your position even faster.

I used to be a 13F (Forward Observer) in the U.S. Army many years ago. It's amazing how tech has changed. I used to use bino's with a inverted T shape overlay that helped me do the math to adjust fire... now they fly drones to do similar functions. (I'm now a quad copter pilot as a hobby since I retired - the things I could have done with the new tech is amazing!)

I love the access this channel gets- that command bunker was icy calm and the mobile comms used by the FO an eye-opener...
