However disconcerting rolls may be, we wouldn't be hearing this because it was not technically possible to record a 14 minute piece in 1907. The pneumatic piano roll technology of the time was actually rather crude, and the dynamics of the "reproducing piano" are frequently all wrong BUT what is 100% accurate is the recorded notation. So the performance should be 'filtered' through one's imagination in order to 'hear' the original performance. Unless the roll could be electronically remastered.
Merci pour tout votre travail et ces incunables que vous partagez avec nous. Juste une remarque, il s'agit ici du S. 389 (version piano solo) et non du S. 122 (version avec orchestre)
Well maby you also could take a welte-mignon that plays better than this one.? this one is great, but it could do better..=) And the photo at 5:03 is from Duo-art! not from Welte. Welte (red) was never re-masterd after it was recorded!=)
"I do not like the rolls and often find them disconcerting" - listen to the Pierian CDs with Welte-Mignon recorded by Kenneth Caswell or Nimbus Records Grand Piano series (Duo-Art), or the ones on the Pianola Institute web site. It will change your attitude and will prove that reproducing pianos were a technical miracle capable of the most precise capturing of all the nuances of the pianist's playing. However, the same cannot be said about this roll which, regarding the mastery of Busoni, sounds awfully and unbelievable. I could hardly understand the piece. The tempo is questionable (too slow to me), the reproduction is clunky and mechanical. I'm convinced it's NOT the fault of Welte-Mignon or whatever system was used but incompetence of those who took on the task of operating the performance.
One of the worst rolls. Busoni didn't even bother editing it. There's a false start in a fioritura passage that isn't even excised and it would have been easy to do, if anyone had cared. But if you have the piano score it's interesting to see how much Busoni changed things, omitted things, added, etc.
I rulli per pianola ci permettono di ascoltare un po'più nel passato ma non tutti poi hanno la fantasia di rievocare l'esecuzione, e questi si lamentano. Altri sono qui senza sapere cosa è una pianola, ma è un'altra storia
I am privileged that my piano teacher studied under Rudolph Ganz, who in turn studied under Busoni.
Puso en orden Toda. La Música de JS. Bach., que además es indispensable para la técnica. Gracias Busoni. ♥️
Io ne vado pazzo. Uno dei miracoli in musica che mi è capitato di incontrare.
