  • This was my 1st Pocket PC to have a VGA screen and what a difference it makes to the clarity of text and images. A powerful device with CFII and SD slot alongside 128MB RAM and while the camera may leave a lot t be desired this is a great device!
    VGA software, should work on any WM2003SE with VGA screen

    This lcd is led backlit transflective lcd. It is more yellowish because it is made by Sony. They were warm but saturated. Sony lcd was used in FS and HP. Dell, Asus and Toshiba used Sharp lcd. They were cold, but also not so colorful. Overall Sony lcds were considered the best at time

      So it is an LED? Thats good to know, my spare unit the screen is very dim so perhaps that's a dead capacitor or similar and can be fixed...

      @@HandheldComputing Yep, LED. The last time CCFL was used in PPC was at the time of reflective screens in FS 600 (Asus OEM, NEC LCD), iPaq38x0 (HTC OEM, NEC LCD), Cassiopeia E200 and Jornada 560

    I was a PDA-obsessed kid. Probably my worst mistake was wasting $600 on an hx4700 instead of a pocket loox 720.

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  Місяць тому

      The hx4700 has high specs and gets good ratings, I haven't got one to do a comparison with. What would you say was better on the Loox?

    • @HackCausality
      @HackCausality 17 днів тому

      @@HandheldComputing The biggest thing was the hx4700 had a stupid touchpad instead of a d-pad. That made it bad for emulated gaming, as well as very awkward for my primary usage, which was ebook reading. The loox not only has a d-pad, but also a jog dial for page scrolling. It also has a camera, which I would have loved. Sadly I was chasing high specs instead of features, and I couldn't resist the 624mhz processor and accelerator chip.

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  16 днів тому

      @@HackCausality I did wonder what the track pad was like to use, I can see that it wouldn't be good for games though! The Jog dial is a must for e-readers, auto scroll can be OK if the screen is good but can make you motion sick after a while 🤣
      The Loox camera is terrible so I don't think you missed out on that 🤣🤣😂😂

    I have a loox 420.

    You made a good choice. I can t say that Loox720 is better than x50v, because the latter doesnt even come to the point of comparison- it was completely useless. Its performance is the worst i ever saw on any PPC (UI, switching between programs...) and downright frustrating, screen angles are also the worst ever (along with Acer n300 which uses the same LCD), and battery life was 45min (not kidding), while i needed 4h for my exams back in the college days.
    As for FS720, the inability to connect to my home wifi router (or any other) is a huge problem, and setting it to WPA mode doesnt resolve the issue. There is a 3rd-party client (Odyssey), but couldnt find wm2003 version. There is also an option for adding a more modern wifi adapter to the CF slot, which i did bought, but need to find a driver.
    Also, you are right about LCD degradation, mine is pretty dim now. I tried to replace it with the LCD from QTEK 9000, but its flex cable is a bit short and i managed to break its traces. Need to find some time to repair the flex cable.

      Yes, I have the n300 and the LCD has such poor viewing angles!!! Its nice and bright but lacks saturation on higher brightness levels - shame as the device itself is really compact! 45min runtime!!!! that's crazy bad. I have found that WM5 and 6 are very slow compared to WM2003SE which is snappy even on a 200Mhz chip.
      I have just snagged a Dell x51v on ebay for £25 so I will finally get to see if its any good! 😃

    • @fradd182
      @fradd182 Місяць тому

      @@HandheldComputing X51V is pretty much the same thing as x50v, i had at least 4-5 devices going through my hands (both 50v and 51V) and have all the same issues. I ended up buying extended battery which finally had decent run time (about 3.5h) but device wasnt "pocketable" anymore. The worst disappointment about X51v is the same poor UI performance as X50V. I can clearly remember the article where some Dell spokesman responded to poor performance criticism. He blamed it all on WInGDI api that wm2003 uses for UI, and said that directX, used in wm5/6 on x51v (is it though?) will bring significant improvements. It didnt.

    Dell Axim graphics cards are useless. Axims don't feel like premium devices but the screens look good and the touch works well. There are a lot of WM6 ROMs made by enthusiasts.

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  Місяць тому +2

      There was an official WM 6 release for the 51V. The
      HTC Advantage also has a graphics accelerator chip and it performs worse then the Loox 720 when it comes to video playback

      First IMHO WM2003SE is the best Pocket PC OS, as it has all the essential features but doesn't have a lot of the bloat so runs faster on similar speced hardware then WM5/6, also the Loox 720 has a great spec and is a very solid build

  • @dosgos

    Does the Loox feel like a premium PDA? Is there WM6 support?

    • @HandheldComputing
      @HandheldComputing  Місяць тому +2

      No support for later versions of WM, that was a feature added during the move to WM5
