The best recent A24 film is Everything Everywhere All At Once. And Hereditary will always be considered as Ari's career best film.
Beau Is Afraid. Yes. Already my favorite film of Ari’s.
Without doubt EEAAO is the best recent A24 film. Incredibly happy they won 7 Oscars and well deserved.

The set design and the world they created was fantastic but overall the movie felt as exhausting as it was entertaining.
There are literally only two short scenes that are semi-unimportant in this film, it’s purposely atmospheric and slow paced and they executed it well, if you don’t like long films just don’t watch long films.
Beau is Afraid is hilariosly preposterous while being very serious, scary while also being sad, completely surreal on the surface yet dealing with something real underneath.. and for me, it didn't make me feel those things at different times in the movie, for most of it these things were felt simultaneously. It's completely unique and original but it reminded me of Hereditary and Midsommar more than I was expecting, especially it's tone which was unsettling but in a different way.
I was watching and reading alot of spoiler free thoughts on the movie and was expecting it to be alot less coherent and cohesive than it was. Not that i understood everything but I didn't find myself getting too lost or wishing any section of the movie would end to get to the next thing like many people have felt.
And there's basically 4 major sections of the film and it really came together for me narratively in the final act, and the ending made sense to me given what I thought the movie was trying to say.
This movie was a whole experience. Everyone in my theater that was sitting there during the credits was sitting there in denial.
10/10 for me, BEAU IS AFRAID is my favorite full-length since Prospero's Books (1991).
A visual essay on consciousness, hermetic philosophy and spiritual rebalancing, Aster weaves in recurring Kubrickian motifs: monoliths, masks, pentagrams, low-hanging circles, diamonds, along with obvious nods to each of SK's films and Wizard of Oz (emerald clothing/unconditional love, rainbows, brick, fib spirals). "You're the same-- except for your face and body" Elaine Bray (Light-Brick) to Beau. Goodbye stranger, hope to see your point of view. We see Beau through the elevator monolith on the left, representing Wendy Torrance's (The Shining) mental breakdown (see Wendy Theory-- Kubrick retelling Oz) and Beau's courageous half being locked in his mother's attic while she feeds him mind-control pills (Clockwork Orange ref). Sparks flying as the door opens symbolize The Covenent of Parts-- "They would be strangers in a land where they would become oppressed and enslaved. The Hebrew term for establishing a treaty between two parties is 'kritat brit' which literally means 'dividing'". Masks and monoliths are inverse of one another (1- Amalgamation of Mona's MW/medium-wave "employees" for her low frequency/vibration/red transmission/mask on wall - standing tall like the Virgin Mary/radio tower, 2- Stars revealed as audience viewing 4 monoliths in arena lit by cosmic latte (average color of universe), later seen exiting theater as if unaware of the starlight from behind/hitting their eyes). Flamingo (feeds young with milk resembling blood-- not Kosher--- that give its young beta carotene needed for pink color [Mona calls him both Angel and Carrot] with legs crossed into a 4 (YHWH/GOD) to the upper-left corner of Toni's doorway adjacent to a string of transparent pentangles signifying Beau's is one of an infinite line of tests to restore balance. Painful impact brings Beau into this strange stage-- strange bed, caretakers, sister, decorative aspects-- his facial scars resembling the feathers on his pillow (reference to Kabuki theater makeup), oblivious to the effect this has on Grace- monstera plants throughout in pebbles-- no soil for Carrot/Beau to take "root" (chakras)-- evidenced as Grace "turns" on him (note inverse pentagrams on her son's bed)-- Beau similarly becomes an interference, impediment, hinderance to her grief-- on hands/knees with a baby mask/blue lips (cyanosis). Roger, Grace, Mona and Dr. Cohen represent multiplicity in 2 directions, Beau as the unifying centerpoint. Roger carries an American football before he leaves to "Roger" Grace-- it's a prolate spheroid-- shape of nebulae, animal testis, atomic nuclei AND the MW logo-- he suggests Beau not perform any jumping jacks-- aka star jacks-- derived from the puppet toy-- activated by pulling string in opposite directions. "Don't incriminate yourself" written on a paper napkin-- ref to Ezekial 18:4: all souls are God's, his life not being his own to dispose of but God's alone (channel 78 on Roger/Grace's monolith ref to Psalm 78-- narrative around the inverse relationship between God's goodness/man's badness) They have Beau's odyssey on DVR so we're watching from their TV/monolith while the 4 world elephants (Hinduism) support the 4 arena monoliths that project out-of-context recordings on the world. Our cinematic monolith/film screen reflects our inherent "otherness" back upon us, a conglomeration of stars eerily familiar but never among us/the living. The complete rainbow symbolizes Beau's 360 rotation rebalancing as he eventually rediscovers the wisdom, empathy, and finally courage to confront his mother/Wicked Witch, his foot/carrot/flamingo leg stuck in the "moon pool" as the fish gets his wish (note how he tugs at his therapist's prescription, winning the larger bone/his secret wishes-- spiritual balance, a real family, her death, we later see a wishbone in a tree outside Mona's house-- Mona spoke/listened to Beau through every character he interacts with, including his puppet therapist, confirming her love from her POV.)

Dude whaaaat I loved the ending lol. I was legit frozen 🥶 for like 4 minutes.. So hysterical and scary, actually one of my favorite ending scenes I’ve ever seen in a film. Up there with the ending of The Shining. Joaquin Phoenix was perfect.
Its kind of crazy how short the closing credits are that they could just keep it stuck on that final shot through it.

I loved this, seen it twice already. I got the chance to watch it in IMAX the first time and it was such a trip. I can see this is going to be a very divisive film, but if you’re looking for a unique film or overall movie theater experience, this is something you don’t wanna miss in my opinion.

Wow what an insane movie. I liked the insane antics of the first hour and a half of the film, but the entire middle section of the movie felt like a drag (specifically the entire bit in woods and the play). The final act was definitely something that I need to understand better. Also… that scene in the attic. 😦
I agree that this movie needs to be rewatched and is very reminiscent of a Kaufman movie.

The reaction to this film reminds me of the reaction to Aronofsky’s Mother!
And while I used to think Aronofsky is a complete genius, I’m at the point now where I feel he’s about 50/50, with his movies either being phenomenal or just very bad.
I hope Aster doesn’t go that direction. But that’s always the risk with any artist that creatively ambitious. And its probably why they are as successful as they are, when they are successful
Just as good as Everything Everywhere if not better.

I’m going tonight and I can’t wait. Ari Aster is right up there with Robert Eggers as one of my favorite upcoming directors. I loved Hereditary and Midsommer. I don’t expect this to be everyone’s cup of tea. I hope that I love it. I’m avoiding all spoilers but with that said I’d love for you to do a spoiler video. It would be nice for you to break it all down. I’ll edit my comment after seeing the film. I’m so excited. It’s Beau tonight and Evil Dead Rise tomorrow night.

I never fall asleep in the theater or watching movies period. The forest scene for me was so tedious and uninteresting that I started to nod off. Still don’t know what to make of this one overall. I don’t hate it, but I don’t think I like it either.
This was certainly Asters most ambitious film to date, but also his deepest IMO. Even though on paper the story is simple, there are a ton of layers to unpack here. Phoenix was simply fantastic as was supporting cast. The amount of genres craft-fully blended together worked for me

I felt very at home watching it, even the parts that dragged on kinda just remind me of an average day and I wasn't really bothered, kinda just smoldered in my feelings. To be honest a lot of the negative feelings many people have expressed are things i feel about most other movies. It's not my favorite movie ever but I can't think of any movie in the last few years that was as good. The negative reviews remind me of audiences throwing tomatoes at stravinsky
And i agree that its all perspective. But the perspectives can be so far unrelated that it made no point

This movie reminded me a lot of Men by Alex Garland. I was really liking it and entertained by it throughout the beginning but omg does it spiral into nonsense by the end.

I had the same feeling. However, "Man" actually made me feel axious and scared, the ending however was fucked up shit. When it comes to "beau", through 3h i was trying to came up with conclusion on what was going on before my eyes. I felt no fear, just confusion throughout the whole movie. Ive just seen it, i must watch some explanations, but now i can't tell i liked it

I was looking forward to it at first since it seemed to do alot I like about physiological horror but then I heard it's just a cruel three hour comedy about a man's misery and I can't stand a comedy thats mean for the sake of mean. I know comedy derives from tragedy or joking about something requires making fun of it but I rather laugh with someone than at someone else since I don't see suffering as humorous, so I'll ask would I be able to get passed this or is it just not for me?

Yea it was a waste of time i heard people in the theatre getting impatient with the dragged out senseless scenes. Director Tried way too hard imo
It was indeed an exhausting watch. The cinematography was beautiful in some parts, but I still felt there is a lot of unanswered questions and it's ultimately a little bit too surreal
I completely understand
The movie is actually horror comedy but it still is a horror movie first and foremost.
I definitely see this going on to be another rare horror movie to win an academy award.
I see this movie on par with silence of the lambs. But different in terms of tone. Silence was set from the detectives perspective as she uses lecter to track down the killer buffalo bill.
In "beau is afraid" beau is already in custody, and hes being processed as a mental patient they are building a case against and everything is from beaus twisted perspective created by his mothers cruel upbringing.
(I used to work in a state mental facility with forensic patients, and i can see hints of the techniques they use to draw information from unwilling or dillusional sources.) This movie is full of them btw.
The movie is shot and told very well to keep you guessing the whole way up until his death at the end in the electric chair. This is why he's in a boat in the middle of a stadium and what should be a gas engine is spitting out the same electric sparks we see coming from the elevator throughout the movie. Beau is in the electric chair receiving his punishment, and the whole movie is the experience he goes through in his mind while he's being electrocuted and descends further and further into hell.
The faces around the stadium at the end are the families of his victims and the society he terrorized. All throughout the movie as the setting constantly changes around beau, it is because hes being terfed from ward to ward and the delusions of the other patients are bleeding into his own as he struggles to make sense of whats happening to him on his way to the electric chair.
That's why he's told to confess several times by different characters randomly.
It's why he sees his defense attorney kill himself when he knows his case is over.
And the worst part of it all. Beau still sees himself as the victim in all of this which is why the whole movie attempts to project his innocence to the audience.
The damning evidence is at the end of the movie when we see the wall of drugs replacing family photos representing all the behavioral drugs beaus mother has used on him as a child.
It culminates in beau entering the attic he was imprisoned in most of his childhood because of his mothers penis envy over being raped but choosing to keep the baby, when beau fights the penis monster representing beaus father.
The reason beau as a serial killer even got caught in the first place, is because his mother died, and at her funeral, he finally conquered his own penis envy with parker poseys character 'Elaine' the girl from his childhood. Beaus mother forbid him against seeing her but still he has a photo of her after all these years.
So unfortunately beau is already a lost cause and strangles her mid coitus and kills her, then proceeds to sleep with her dead body until he gets caught which is why we see her carried out with rigor mortis.
And the naked man with the knife is beau, beau projects his own faults and failings onto his reality as a coping mechanism for his pychotic schizophrenic delusions, but in reality hes a serial killer sitting in the electric chair and the whole movie is beaus mind processing how he came to be there in the first place.
This movies greatest trick is convincing you it isnt a horror movie about a mans descent into hell which is also the devils greatest trick.
Also ari aster made a short film before this movie called "beau" and its very similar to how this movie starts with stolen keys and luggage and weird anxiety. And in the short beau gets dragged to hell by a demon because he used a quija board.

I couldn't stand O LUCKY MAN, the first time I saw it, but I loved it the 2nd and 3rd times. Despised every second of SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK both times I sat through that trash. I'm never watching this movie, so please bring on the spoilers!

I am afraid of not liking Beau is Afraid. I really like Hereditary and Midsommar was okay for a watch. So probably not watching this in theaters unfortunately.

Ari Aster calls this a nightmarish comedy. Doesn’t sound there are a lot of laughs here.

I absolutely hated this movie, it failed to engage or entertain me, and at the end of the day, committed the ultimate sin of just not being an enjoyable watch. It felt like 3 hours of confusing, frustrating nonsense to me.

I think of this movie as “white guy’s Bardo”. I’m really curious how critics and society in general will react to it compared to their generally negative takes on Bardo. Personally, I don’t like either, but think Bardo was simply a better made film.
Turn away! You are going to lose 3 hours you cannot get back! This is easily worst movie of 2023 by miles. I don’t like to be negative, but I was filled with anger when the credits rolled. The insanity was pointless. It is if Everything Everywhere - hotdog hands, plugs, rocks, but there is no coherent payoff. Terrible! Reminds me of Movie 43.
