I still remember years ago when I did this grading after being stuck on 9 kyu for a year due to not grasping the back stance no matter how much I got corrected

Thank you for these, I'm enjoying doing these myself a lot :D! One question, sorry if this comes off as ignorant! Everywhere I go, Soto uke is the block that in this video you call Uchi uke, and vice versa. Has everyone been getting the names wrong ALL this time? I thought I was crazy when I first heard you invert the names so I even looked around on the Internet to make sure lol

      Hmm I think the same.

I was going to say the same thing. I used to study at a Shotokan Dojo and I'm sure I remember Soto Uke being Outside Block and Uchi Uke being Inside Block.

No he has them correct Soto uke is a block TO the outside not from the outside same with Uchi uke but TO the inside not from it.

@@harleymarsh8756 Hmm, I see... I'm starting to think it's more a matter of interpretation, as in the terms can technically be interchangeable so it's not really wrong to call one block one way or the other? That said, nowadays it's pretty much widely accepted at this point that Soto uke is *from* the outside and Uchi uke is *from* the inside, but really there could easily be an alternate universe where the opposite is the case? We need Jesse Enkamp to clear this up hahahah

@@harleymarsh8756 OK, I crosschecked with other youtube videos by searching 'Soto Uke' I could only find one other video that backed up your point of view and I stopped counting at 20 tutorials on how to perform Soto Uke as an Outside to Inside block.

Are uchi uke and soto uke reversed in this video? I know that you are basically from where Karate was born, but it seems odd that for so many years to be taught wrong by several Shotokan Karate masters.

Oh Nono! The term is controversial. You can perceive the block to the outside or from the outside
