That's true, Missyou Simbolon, because the purpose of swaddling is to help your baby feel secure during the transition from being in the small space of the womb, to being in the naturally open space of the world. Babies start feeling comfortable without needing "walls" usually around three weeks of age. Perfect!

Thanks for your comment. Newborn babies have bent legs and arms at birth because of their position in the womb. For about 2-3 weeks your baby will be in this bent position naturally. Swaddling your baby in the natural position for the first 2-3 weeks is best. You baby will "unfold" naturally, without intervention. Thanks! Hope this is helpful.

Good observation. Having the hands comfortably bent inside the blanket, similar to being in the womb, is comforting for newborn babies. Yes, they do tend to sleep better when swaddled in those first couple of weeks of life while getting used to being in the open spaces of the world. Thanks!

I'm 30 weeks pregnant, so close to meeting my little guy, and i was just wondering, what does swaddling do for the baby? Why is it recommended? Don't babies prefer to move freely, even while asleep?
Congratulations! I'm so happy for you! Good question. Actually this swaddling technique, with your baby's arms inside the blanket is for calming your newborn and for helping your newborn sleep more comfortably. This swaddle is only used for the first 2-3 weeks of life to help your baby transition from the confined space of the womb, where your baby was swaddled by your body, to the open space of the outside world. Some babies startle easily without borders, sometimes get upset, and being swaddled helps your baby to feel more secure, very similar to being in the familiar confines of the womb. It's a tool for you to use to help your baby be happy during the change from inside to outside. For feeding you will want to swaddle your baby with the hands up by the face, out of the blanket. Or, if you are breastfeeding, your unswaddled baby covered with a blanket might work well. The most important practice as you are learning newborn/baby care is to shower your baby with lots of human touch, love, and attention. These three energies, when given abundantly, will help you to raise an amazing human being. You'll see! Again, congratulations! Hope this is helpful :)

Swaddling is only for the first 2-3 weeks of life as your baby adjusts to being without the boundaries of the womb. It is comforting to your newborn.
Immediately! And no not for first weeks of life. A baby should be wrapped especially at night or if it is really cold. I did it because it makes them feel safe and it conserves heat to the body. Did anyone realize just how confused a child was at birth? Not only are they confuses at where they are or what happened but they are also frightened because they are not confined inside Mom or even in the dark, most of them can't see. They can't understand what is touching them. They've been in the dark and in H2o for 9 months. They have heard Moms voice but no one has touched them at all. I've seen newborn babies cry and try to hit whatever it was that touched them. Some of those kids had a great arm. If they had been older they could have knocked the nurse out! Always wrap ur child until they are used to it and are old enough to understand that u aren't going to hurt then. It's all part of their security!

The advantage of swaddling your newborn is to help calm and center your baby during the transition from being in the womb to being in the outside world. In the womb your baby is very curled up, like being in a ball. In the outside world your baby has no "walls" and no boundaries. Most babies like to return to walls and boundaries off and on until they get used to being without them... usually during the first 2-3 weeks of life. The swaddle blanket provides the sensation of walls and boundaries that comforts your newborn. When your baby starts to fight being swaddled it is time to stop. Honor what your baby "tells" you, always.

Swaddling a baby depends on a country's climate... Tropical climate countries shouldn't swaddle their baby
Swaddling is used for the first couple of weeks in your baby's life. It helps your baby transition from the tight "wrap" of Mom's body to the outside world. Being wrapped or swaddled is comforting for your newborn. If the temperature inside the home is cooler than the tropical climate, swaddling is good. Yes, if the temperature is too warm for blankets, then perhaps swaddling is not a good practice in those circumstances. Thanks for mentioning this idea.
Jansen surya that's not true. I was swaddled as a baby and I was born in a tropical country. If you look up baby swaddling from around the world, you'll see that its very common, the different techniques are used depending on climate

You hardly every see babies get swaddled in jamaica. Im gona be a mommy in a few weeks. Especially in this hot summer. Swaddling isnt something ill be doing. But i love seeing babies swaddled tho. So precious.

Hi, you're a really good Mom to be asking, paying attention to your baby, and noticing that your baby "hates swaddling." Good for you! When your baby does not enjoy being swaddled it is time to stop. Swaddling is just used for the first 2-3 weeks of your baby's life to help your baby transition from being in the close confines of the womb to v=being in the very open space of the outside world. Most babies find swaddling comforting for about the first 2-3 weeks, then they get used to being free to move arms and legs and they adjust very well. Your baby is already adjusted to being outside the womb and apparently loves the freedom of movement. It's really great that you can read your baby so well. Continue to pay attention to what your baby is telling you, and always honor your baby's needs and desires. Together you should have lots of fun exploring this new world of parenting. Good luck to you both! Oh ... the other two parts of exceptional parenting are: lots of human touch, and lots of love showered upon your baby.
