I wonder why the portuguese keep referring to her majesty as Isabel II instead of Elizabete II
In Portugal we translate names into the closest "true" portuguese form. Elisabeth in the Portuguese vernacular is Isabel, and as such should be used, since Elisabete is an Anglicism, as would be a Marguerete instead of Margarida, or Carol, Charles, Karl instead of Carlos, etc. It is for these reasons that we say Londres and not London, Bucareste and not Bucuresti, Nova Iorque and not New York, Moscovo and not Moscow, etc.
