  • The rules basically say that if you are coming into the airport, you have to have a legitimate reason to be there. You can’t loiter or panhandle or find a place to sleep.

    As a kid in the 1970s growing up in NYC, there were what was called SROs in many neighborhoods - cheap residence hotels where you could live in a room and use shared bathroom facilities. They were kind of seedy places with sketchy residents but it must have beat living in a tent! Many thousands of SRO units disappeared starting in the 1960s. There are a lot of complicated issues contributing to homelessness but one big one is the lack of really cheap places to live anymore for those who simply cannot afford more.

    • @microbios8586
      @microbios8586 4 дні тому +4

      You are absolutely correct. I don't understand why boarding houses aren't common these days. Short term rental units with shared bathrooms would solve so many problems.
      It's certainly possible to find people who sublet bedrooms, but it's often illegal and among people of the same immigrant background. Perhaps there is too much liability in renting short term to unstable people? Perhaps we need to change our laws so that there isn't such a heavy burden and risk for the property owner.

      In my rural town there used to be a campground. It was seedy and it had many trailers and campers unsuitable for year-round living, even some in tents. But it was all that some people could afford, and the owners worked to maintain the toilet and shower facilities and to make it a safe place. But new town and state regulations made it illegal and it had to close. Where could all those people go?

Some of us have worked hard, planned ahead, spent our money wisely and saved where we can, we’ve also addressed any medical (physical or mental) needs as best we could. I understand it’s tough for some and even tougher for others but many of these people have put themselves in these situations.

    • @TVHouseHistorian
      @TVHouseHistorian 7 днів тому

      That’s not why these people are on the streets. It’s the result of a decades-long, burgeoning substance abuse issue that’s been growing underneath our noses. Most of these people do not want real solutions to their problem. What they want are free handouts so they can sustain life while they destroy their life on their own terms, and take society down with them. That is what chronic homelessness is all about.

      Ok I don’t want a smelly homeless person around when I’m eating either, but jeez have some compassion! Most of these people aren’t homeless by choice - and many normal Americans are one missing paycheck or medical disaster away from the same thing happening to them.

      You are not wrong. Once I saw a homeless person walk into the restaurant that I was eating at and boy did I not know that he ended up sitting at the table next to me. I just couldn't eat because the smell whiffed at me. I had to report him because A, I'm a paying customer trying to enjoy my meal and B, I can't eat if I have the smell coming at me. And this was not his first time since the owners told me that he was banned from the establishment for panhandling and bothering the other customers. If he wanted something to eat, I don't mind getting him something. Most importantly do not walk into an establishment and sneak past the host stand to seat yourself or try to invite yourself to someone's table.

    I agree with them limiting access to the airport to those with legitimate reasons. But I suppose the concern is what do you define as legitimate? Is it strictly a ticketed passenger catching a departing flight or arriving from a departing flight? What about those of us who go to the airport to buy our flight tickets or deal with reservation issues which we couldn't deal with over the phone? What about those of us picking up a family member or wishing a family member who may be leaving us for sometime a farewell?

    The ordinance is to vague and allow anyone to expelled from a public facility with any reason. Those who agree with it will only disagree when they are expelled from the airport. Legitimate business can be anything such as auditing where your tax dollar are being wasted and how your right as this is being violated by a ordinance. People should know that just because you don't like something doesn't mean its harrassment/uncomfortable. Yes homeless people sleeping at the airport is an issue and most airports don't allow that to happen anyhow.
    That Ordinance could open up a can of litigation for the airport

    Portland is one of the national punching bags for the homeless issue, but I’ve never seen homeless people at the airport there, which I fly in and out of several times every year. What’s different? They’ve got public transit directly to the terminal from downtown, so it’s not access.

    Instead of dealing seriously with the issues of homelessness in the US, authorities, corporations etc are just doing what they can to make live even more difficult for these poor people. Not everyone is a criminal, drug addict or even illegal immigrant. A lot of people are ordinary people whose life circumstances just took a turn for the worse. A lot of these people wouldn’t be homeless either if the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world bothered to care for its citizens in much the same way most European countries do.

    Well, what is your state doing for the hounless from what I can tell nothing? Other than the population of homeless people in Georgia is ridiculously high. I mean, it's almost as bad as Arizona. These people didn't originally be homeless. They became homeless from misfortune. Whether I'm losing a job during the pandemic, there just needs to be a place where they can lay their head until they can get back on their feet or if they have mental issues, they should be able to go to a mental hospital.

    • @emmettturner9452

      Most came to Georgia that way. Others prefer that lifestyle and were enabled by Federal policies. Hard to blame the state for either. I myself was left homeless after an EF4 tornado when Biden refused to declare the Federal disaster for individual aid even though surrounding states got theirs for EF0-EF3 tornados. Says it was because Newnan, GA has more money than the others hit by the same outbreak but fat lot of good that did me with my retail job and recently paid off Corolla (original owner) left crushed under a tree. Thankfully, a friend gave me a 25 year old van that’s barely running and the landlord invited me back once the house was repaired two years later (months ago). Had to stay in my rented workshop with no overhead lights, insulation, shower, or stove for two years.
