A few notes on GA4. Yes, it does suck. And it is a big step back in usability from the previous version, as if Google strictly prohibited the developers of GA4 from speaking to any end-users. And, on top of that, GA4 is, in most implementations, still not GDPR compliant. If all you care about is basic website use data, then you can get away without using GA4. But, if you advertise with Google, you will almost certainly get pulled back in to using GA4 and GTM, along with a cookie consent tool and other steps if you need GDPR compliance. GA4 can be made a bit "better" but using Google Looker Studio to build your reports and dashboards. Still very complex, but a good option if you have more sophisticated needs. I have a couple of projects coming up where I'll be using Umami. Deploying the cloud version only requires adding a JS include in the header, and the basic reporting, combined with Umami's support for UTM parameters should address 99% of the needs.
I got so fed up with GA4 I'm building my own tool. We're still in the testing phase, but so far the data reporting seems on par with Google Analytics. Wish me luck!
I'm an analytics newbie. But...can't you just put a script on your server to get the IP address and other stats? Is there no open source software you can use for free for this purpose?
@@Craylor Ok. Awesome! But, then why pay a monthly fee for some other option? Also, ad-block I think wouldn't affect a self-hosted option vs the blacklisted-by-ad-blockers other options.

You can! Plausible, Umami, and Matomo are all open source and free to self-host on your own server.
