  • Fun stuff!
This is the 2nd in a series of me getting back into playing jazz, just by myself now, and making UA-cam videos gives me a goal to work toward.
    Serious stuff!
I studied music at Laurentian University in Canada which has now gone bankrupt because of the corrupt and bloated administration that is plaguing all North American universities mostly resulting in price gauging students in order to keep and increase a high number of highly paid admin staff. I dedicate this series to the great professors I had, who future students will not know because the music program is gone. I was a better player in university but I think they'd like to know that music, including the many things I learned from them, has filled my life with love, fun, (frustration LOL) and friendship - some of the first friends I made here in Japan I met at a jazz jam session and they're still friends now. Thank you!
    Bass stuff!
Bass: Washburn AB20 fretless I've had for about 30 years. I know there's a buzzing sound. You can't hear it plugged in, but acoustically you can hear the truss rod rattling.
Strings: LaBella black tape wound, probably medium gauge.
    Recording stuff!
Video: iPhone 11, back camera using Filmic Pro which was a mistake because I didn't know how to use it and the video was too dark. I lightened it, but now it's grainy.
Audio: AKG 414 as you can see in the video capturing the bass and vocals, and a direct line from the bass. Both of those are plugged into a Zoom AMS-44 going into my Mac laptop into GarageBand.
Mixing: I mixed in Digital Performer using RX 7 spectral denoise to get rid of train noise (I wanted to record in my living room which is nearer the tracks), RX 7 decline to reduce the clacking of the strings, then EQ, and on the bass direct channel just Waves Brass. On the master channel is Waves MaxxBass to make it sound ok on small speakers, then Ozone 9 using EQ, Vintage Limiter, and then setting the level to -13.5 LUFS for UA-cam.

Super great Brent! (or Bee'g From the Valley ...LOL). The bass translated very well on my side (Mac-book pro laptop). All the mixing moves you did worked great. As for your heritage/Alumni ...etc from Laurentian. That is a shame for sure!! That was such a promising school. Glad you got to experience it. I sure miss the years before that, with both Ray Laronde and Rob Mills. You are a polished player to this day!! Don't stop playing. The nylon strings....Yum!

Thanks brother! Laurentian and Cambrian and the culture surrounding them were (and partly still are) diamonds in the nickel mine that is our hometown where people interested in "something more" can find it. I had GREAT professional jazz musicians as teachers so I think I was lucky. Rob!! Haven't seen or heard of him since the last time we squabbled about something. LOL!
Polished - you haven't heard takes 1-19!! LOL And yeah, nylon is the way to go on fretless IMHO.

Hahhhhh, I haven’t heard from Him either. But that’s ok too I suppose. Sudbury could rival any music city. You are right. For the curious minded musician. Sleep well. Night ‘

Ironic you sing that, considering how much you get around!
