I actually am having great results with water only washing. I got complete sebum coverage in a month. And honestly now my pervious favorite conditioners make my hair dry now. I love sebum it stretches my hair and makes my hair so soft. When I first started I put a little almond oil on my ends so they wouldn't dry it, also eating a healthy diet truly makes you produce more sebum. My scalp is oily now which I've never experienced with my natural hair. Also if your feeling like it's too dry you can deep condition with banana purée or banana baby food. The banana will wash out and it doesn't strip your sebum. Hope this helps someone.
When first doing this method what should you use to clarify? I’m protein sensitive so that’s what’s making me willing to try this method. I know I’ve heard about the apple cider vinegar rinse & let’s just say it didn’t work for me.
I decided to try "water only" on my hair - so far, it's been about a month and a half. By that, I mean: over a month of NO styling produces, NO masks, NO shampoo or conditioners, no oils, powders, stringents or detanglers, NOTHING but water... and air. I found out that my hair was a completely different "person" than I thought it was. hahah! After a complete clarifying session and 8 weeks of strictly water and air, my sebum achieved total coverage in about 25-30 days; lightly sticky/tacky when wet, and has a "holding" effect when dry. I have about 8 inches of 4B hair with no manipulative or chemical damage or thinning at the ends. My sebum turns into a silky lube in a hot shower preventing knots of any kind. When dry, it doesn't feel like the rough, dried out hair like you'd expect... in fact, it feels ridiculously baby-soft and sheathed; protected and held in place whether I wear it in protective twists for two weeks or sport the enormous Afro 3-4 days in a row. I use my fingers, and a wide toothed comb. No boar's hair bushes. My husband is constantly playing in it (as I smile and grit my teeth LOL) I sleep on a silk pillow case and embrace the rain. My hair & scalp's natural smell from every-other-day water-washing and air drying ranges from sharp cheese on gym days, to the clean smell of warm skin on air-dry days. And when I air dry my hair around the house or outdoors, it is a quick process. Something about the total sebum coverage makes my hair dry faster than it ever did under a blow drier or bonnet drier or any other alien chemical/electrical/heat treatments applied after washing. I also want to say that the total sebum coverage was NOT about preening or scritching or employing the inversion method for ME. I didn't do any of that. What I DID do was rest under the shower tolerating the warmest water my skin could healthfully handle, with up to 20 minutes of finger combing every other day. NO towel drying. Just simply letting the water run off onto a shoulder towel and styling. That was MY experience. Thank you for this video. Scientific approaches are all I care about.
Sounds great! Noticed a big change with my 4c hair. I actually went back to shampoo and conditioner after a few weeks and boy did I regret it. My hair got super dry again and my scalp eas super itchy again. With the water only method my scalp wasn't itchy and my hair was really soft.
Sounds great! Did you wear your hair loose or did you have it in twists or braids? Large, med? So if you did not scritch nor preen I'm trying to clearly understand what exactly you were doing in the shower. Was you just letting the shower run over your loose hair and it pushed the melted sebum down for you? Just trying to get a clearer picture of what worked for you as I may like to try your version. hope you reply. tia
Just re-read your post and you said you were finger combing, so I'm assuming this is when you were under the shower stream. So I would say this was a form of preening as the sebum would be pulled down your strands as you did this. Would still love to hear from you.
Yeah, I washed my hair about every 3 to 4 days. If you wash it every day, just make sure you're not putting it in a style that prevents it from drying in between rinses. That will produce a moldy smell over time.
christine1962ful yes, standing in the shower with warmest water did bring down the sebum. Finger detangling helped this process. I parted my hair down the middle from front to back, racked thru one side at a time with my fingers until all tangles were out and then took large sections under the water and twisted them. I hope that made sense. Take about a third of your hair from one side of your head and twist it gently as if you are ringing the water out of it BUT you are doing this UNDER the water. This (I believe) is what helped bring the sebum down and cover every strand.
kay jay have you ever gone to ross or marshals and then to the skin care section they usually have expensive conditioners like shea moisterure and chi there. You should check it out. I know it is still expensive but it helps to save every dime. I got some shea moisture conditioner for 6$ instead of 10$ their. I hope this helps!!
@@benitajones3165 i got a chi leave in conditioner there for $9 and a apothecary leave in spray with bioton and collagen for $7 (when its normally $22).
I'm a natural hairstylist and I just wanted to tell you how overjoyed I am that I ran into your page. It is sooo refreshing to see an accurate representation of natural hair in an animation and your hair tips are things that I'm constantly telling my clients and am honestly learning to master myself as a girl with long 4C hair. Loove you. Love your mission. Keep going girly! ❤
i know this method can be intimidating and people are worried about dry hair but mannn...if you've never felt your hair with a decent amount of sebum coverage root to tip its INCREDIBLE. i havent found a product more protective and softening than my sebum. the baggy method and rubbing braid or twists ends on your svalp can help this along quicker. Give it a month. shes got great takeaways. ITS SO WORTH A TRY!!
Yes it’s definitely worth it! I started almost 2 years ago and grew my hair from BSL to hip length with very strong supple protected hair! That’s how well it has worked for me. I would never have imagined hair care for dense coarse low porosity 4B hair like mine could be so simple and effective. Like man!
This def works!! My male cousin who had a fade haircut most of his life, grew his hair close to mid back length in 1 1/2-2 years after letting it grow out, and all he put in his hair daily was water from the shower. His hair grew faster than mine and I was using a variety of store bought products!!
Oh wow seeing this comment has given me hope! I buzzed my natural hair off recently and I'm starting from scratch again. I'm planning to do the water only method and I figure that since I'm starting with barely any hair, getting sebum coverage shouldn't be a problem. 1 1/2 years is goals!
I started WO almost 2 years ago to the date and in that time, my hair has grown from BSL to hip length, thick and healthy to the ends. And I do a light trim every 2-3 months. I do live in mini twists though which helps me not manipulate so often, aiding length retention. It’s like my hair is trained now. It’s stronger and easier to manage than ever, very defined. I have so much less shrinkage too, which I noticed within about a month of using the method.
Flower Girle how often did you wash your hair and did you take down your twists each time? I did wo last summer but I felt like I was taking my twists down too much and stopped
@ Miscellaneous Life In the beginning, I started with chunky twists, maybe like 40-50 total. I made sure to stritch and massage daily, sometimes running the sebum on my fingertips through the very ends of my twists. I washed my twists like every other day maybe 3 or so times per week until I had full coverage (about 3-4 weeks). I only took the twists down to preen and redo once per week. Depending on how busy I was, I would spread this out different times of the day some days, taking my time, finger detangling and preening a few sections of twists as I had time. 5 twists here, 10 twists there, etc. But I made sure all twists would be preened one good time within the week. Sometime after I got full coverage, I put in mini twists. I wash these without taking them down until it’s time to redo them - once per month or slightly longer. I typically wash my mini twists only 1-2 times per week, but it varies. And I massage my scalp whenever I feel like it, even when not washing. When washing my twists, I focus on stritching and massaging my scalp and kind of just let the water flow down my twists, squeezing them a little. Even though I use a shower filter, I still do a final rinse with distilled water to further discourage mineral build up on the hair. I find my twists really don’t frizz at all when they are washed so I wash as often as I want. I always T-shirt dry and follow up with a blow dry on cool high speed setting to make sure my hair gets fully dry. I don’t want to risk fungal issues from leaving damp spots. And that’s it. Easy peasy. I don’t miss the long drawn out wash day process I used to have using products. My “wash days” are now managed well under an hour- like 30 minutes tops. This includes T-shirt dry time and blow-drying. I also never moisturize my hair with water or anything else between washes because I have found that I don’t need to. 🤷♀️
I think for me the water only method might work better with shower water filter to remove the hard water chemicals. When using a water softener my hair feels fantastic and drys less frizzy. Just a thought!
Hi! I am doing the "water only" method, but I am absolutely helping my hair's moisture with my home made shea butter mix, including plenty of oils. I massage, scritch and preen with an essential oil and rinse thoroughly every other day. I style my hair with flexi rods, using the shea butter mix and flax seed gel. This may not be the traditional water only method, but my hair is very soft, manageable and barely sheds! The sebum is there and I am really enjoying it!
I absolutely love how you explain the science behind all of these hair crazes so we can make informed decisions before we try things out. Love love love your page, keep up the good work!
I've been doing this method 6 months and it's done wonders for me. I used to hate wash days when I used to use shampoos and products. My hair used to tangle alot and I had a hard time getting the moisture balance right. I used to be a product junkie as well. No product i've ever used has worked better than my own sebum. My hair is the strongest it's ever been and it doesn't break. It's rough in the beginning when you first start, but it gets better the more you do it.
Please I'm curious. Can you give me your detailed step by step regime? I can send my email address if you prefer that. I really want to know how you did yours.
Yes I been water only just shy of 2 years now, and my hair is definitely stronger and better for it. It seemed to help sort out common natural hair issues for me- shrinkage, tangling, fairy knots. It also grew from BSL to hip length which is the longest my hair has been in my adult life or at any point in my nearly 18-year natural hair journey.
The water only method works best when you run water (not warm water) thru your hair every day or two. Not just for wash day. I unintentionally did it for 6 months because i would have hot flashes and felt the need to wet my hair to cool off and my hair was in cornrows..went from 5 inches to 13inches in 6months💯no lie...rinsing my hair with water daily for about 5minutes...WORKS WONDERS! gotta remember the #1 moisturizer for every part of the human body is WATER...so if u have to wash your behind everyday, scrub them legs and keep them elbows smooth and clean, wouldnt u think u would have to apply water to your hair every day as well???! #LOGIC water works better than any product that is man made💯💯💯💯try it. U will not be disappointed...but beyond shocked😳😍😍😍
Girl yes! My hair has grown from BSL to hip length in less than 2 years using water only- no products, oils, creams, shampoo, conditioner or anything- and wearing mini twists. It’s also been super easy to manage and care for. I’ve found that taking care of dense coarse type 4 hair does not have to be complicated at all for great results.
I️ rinse my hair every 3-5 days and in the shower I️ use olive oil to lightly coat the rest of my hair that doesn’t have sebum coverage (then as I’m rinsing the olive oil and sebum travel and coat my hair leaving it moisturized and soft for days) I️ then let my hair dry in a wash n go.
This is the very basic part of it. To combat dryness there are oil you can use to keep your ends moisturized until you get full sebum coverage. Also there are various things you actually can use to deep condition, condition or use as leave in such as okra gel or flaxseed gel. I have been doing this method for about 9 months and have excellent results. I tried it because I was at my wits end trying to find a product and regimen that would actually soften my hair. It's important to add that this regimen can be tweaked for your hair needs. A good channel to watch is wateronlyhairwash. She has a wealth of information based on her own research and her water only hair journey. Good luck to those who try it.
If u ever decide to try this method again, I would say try not to rinse daily, or if u want to do it daily, at least do it once a day rather than twice (morning and night). Also, i would recommend oiling your ends so they won't dry out as u are waiting for full sebum coverage (^-^) Great video overall though
***** Basically said what I was going to say ;) Supplement when needed with an oil or butter. #StillGoingStrong #10months I don't wash everyday, it varies by the week.
I've found just wetting my hair every day and doing cowashing/shampooing has blessed my hair. I think wetting my hair has just allowed more moisture for my hair and I'm seeing a difference!
I tried the Water Only Hair Method a while ago (last summer) and it really did not work for me. It left my hair brittle with A LOT of split ends. It also left my hair smelling funky all the time. One thing that I did gain from the method was the need to simplify my regimen. I found that my hair thrived when I did not overwhelm it with two different creams and three different oils applied at once. I don't think I will every try this method again but it did help me to develop a more simple regimen for my hair.
I tried it again without daily rinses and was successful. I wanted to make sure the first time I tried it was to the book. But after that, I tweaked it a little to suit my hair better.
I love it. I detox my hair with a bentonite clay to get it balanced. Then I use an overnight deep conditioner inspired by 22nd Century Natural Woman. I rinse every other day and my hair is thriving. I'm so grateful for this method. I have 4C hair and I can't imagine going back to store-bought shampoos and conditioners. Water only hair washing is simple and effective
I am shocked, lost for words and super excited ! My hair has changed and my regime has improved Just a little over one month after daily scritching & preening has helped my hair grow almost 2 centimetres of !! I have the gray/coppered henna roots as PROOF! Thank you for sharing
this is working great for me and I've been doing it for like 5 days haha. I have 3b/3c high porosity bra strap length hair. after 2 rinses, I had sebum over all of my hair, even my ends, to some extent. especially the front, it is very waxy and my curls clump on their own. I used to use hair gel for defined curls. my hair is soo soft. the cons though are that my hair takes forever to dry and it takes 45 minutes to an hour to finger detangle. I cant wait for full coverage!
Wow! I really wish i would have seen your videos when i began my natural hair journey. This info would have saved me alot of heartache and pain! You are awesome!
Wonderful explanation. I find water only is a great way to take care of our hair but daily washes are a nono for coarser hair textures. I think it could be better for finer hair. I find 3 days a week is enough with head massages and sliding the sebum down the strands before wash day arrives again.
WOW! Thank you so much! I've been told to wach my natural hair with cold water to lock in the oils, which I didn't understand :/ Watching ur video I know to watch my hair with warm water!!! which I love!
I feel like this method would work for me if I was eating extremely healthy all the time. Because I have noticed when I get on my raw vegan kick that my new growth is especially soft and silky with the right balance of sebum. I may try it this summer when the weather is humid and therefore it naturally moisturizing.
Thank you for your video. I've been water only washing since October of 2014. I did not rinse my hair daily, because of the reasons that you mentioned. Also after washing I used a flat front blow dryer with a comb attachment and on the low setting to stretch my hair and make it easier to work the sebum down from my scalp to my ends. I used a mix of glycerin and water on my ends at first, because they were just too dry and were breaking off. Glycerin is water soluble so it washed away with each rinse. Now that I have full coverage I rinse as needed, blow dry on low, and use a SOFT boar bristle brush regularly. I love the water only hair care regimen. My hair is softer than I ever remember, it shines, and I keep a lot of money in my pocket. I also followed the "Water Only Hair Wash " channel here on YT. She is a great resource. I asked her many questions and she always took time to reply and provide answers and suggestions. My take away is that this method works for me. I took the basics and used my judgment along with good advise to make it work for MY hair. At this point I use no product and follow the method pretty much as you have described. Thanks again.
Ca Roll That's awesome. I started in September and also watched the same UA-camr. I supplemented with either shea butter or coconut oil the first 2 weeks and every so often, I will still add some if needed. Nice to see how you've tweaked the method for you.
Love how it is rocking for you! I am doing a overhaul of my routine and glycerin is on the list. So you can imagine how happy I was to se someone else thinking outside the box of how to keep hair moisturised in this method!
Listen to your hair right away when it begins to shows you signs. Why not use oil or a homemade conditioner when needed along with water only washing? In the end, it will hurt you less than ignoring the signs that your hair is in need of something more just to risk seeing whether or not things pan out well. ^^^ This is what I personally learned from this video. Thank you so much for such an abundance of information but for keeping it sweet and to the point!!! I feel much better educated about this method. Thank you, thank you.
Although I watched a couple videos that claimed this worked well I knew it would lead to dryness. The idea of not putting any product on my hair is absolutely crazy to me. It's nice to see the science behind it.
This is such a great analysis of this method! loved this! Im currently washing with water and I do like it a lot! Its so simple and refreshing to rinse with water. And since I'm an avid runner, I love rinsing my hair everyday. I started with a Bentonite Clay mask and now am currently on week 3. I agree the dryness did become more frequent on my ends but I did as WaterOnlyHairWash suggests, and used olive oil on my ends only...this week I've started adding Jamaican Black castor Oil on my ends and I've noticed a def difference in moisture balance. I think not for nothing all afro textured heads should step away from the product overload at least a couple times a year to get to know their hair better. So far I'm loving the experience!
What I have heard from other people trying the water only method is to use an oil initially until your hair can achieve full sebum coverage. I would assume jojoba oil would be ideal because its properties are closest to that of hair's sebum.
This was done incorrectly. I have been water only washing for some time now. Your biggest mistake was leaving your hair in twists or braids for the duration of this experiment. These so-called " protective hairstyles" are actually protecting the damage, the only thing you are accomplishing with this is keeping the damage from your roots and you are ensuring damage to the rest of your hair. Six weeks was certainly not enough time for you. I appreciate the knowledge that you shared about how sebum spreads; that being said, you need to have full sebum coverage before you know the full experience. The amount of time it takes for the sebum to spread varies from person to person. For me it took 3 months before I had full coverage. The key is not to let anything touch your scalp and roots. When you are first starting out use conditioners and moisturizers on the hair that the sebum has not reached yet. As time goes by, you'll notice that less and less of your hair needs product until you are in no need of it. Wash your hair with warm or cool water (depending on your porosity) daily, but "scritching" is not necessary. Also, for those of us who are NOT protein sensitive, monthly protein treatments are not amiss. You should not be experiencing breakage, dryness, or a brittle feel if you are doing this correctly. In fact you should notice that you are not even shedding half as much as you did when you used product. I conducted an experiment a week prior to starting and the first week during the water only method. For my last week before beginning this method I collected all the hair that I shed during my nightly styling routine. This hair did not include the hair that I shed in the shower. And during the first week of beginning the method of preening and daily water rinsing, I collected the hair that I shed during the nightly styling. To my shock I discovered that it took me a WEEK to shed the same amount of hair that I would shed in ONE DAY of using product. Breakage? Single strand knots? Did. Not. Exist. After you wash your hair with water, grab a micro fiber towel and wrap your wet hair in it and leave there for about an hour (if you have high density; d-e-n-s-i-t-y, you may need longer than an hour). Then take the towel off and style as usual. When you take the style out the next morning, you will have the typical first day hair and it may feel hard to the touch. that hardness is the dried sebum. But after about and hour and a half you will have glorious 3rd day hair and the hardness will melt away into beautiful softness. Also your days of frizzy dull hair are over. I have low porosity but strangely no matter what I did, I could never get my hair to shine without one product in particular. Now my hair is always shining and even more than it ever did with that product. You will notice that your hair will dry many times faster than it did before. This is simply because when you add, conditioners, leave-ins, moisturizers, etc it takes anywhere from 15-24 hours for your hair to be completely dry. Not so with water only washing... because you're using water.. only. haha My hair has never been so soft and dense. Because I shed less, and experience NO breakage, I repeat, ABSOLUTELY NOOOOO breakage, my ends are thicker and my hair is denser and stronger over all. Your hair was dry because it wasn't ready to be without moisturizer yet, your hair was tangled because it was in twists >.< and your hair was brittle and broke because of the tangles and knots. I encourage you to try this again. But this time you probably need about 4 months before you can post a video about the full experience.
I love this channel but u have to say, and I am glad that someone said it (YOU!). I agree with everything you stated. I am just going through an overhaul of my wohw routine and reading through ALL the comments. I think those with the negatives opinions have never tried it or as you say, doing it incorrectly... I am still trying to figure things out but overall, my hair is thriving not suffering under this method. People still have dry hair, breakage etc when they use commercial products so what's the difference? Don't we all still try to figure it out? Had the video not shown breakage (because of in corrections), the naysayers would be jumping all over this method. However, it was HER experience, and overall, a great video!

i was wondering, if you use oil or conditioner on the parts where sebum has not yet covered, how do you get rid of the oil or conditioner on those parts so that the sebum can take over? do you use a mild or organic cleanser, like ACV or clay mud washes on those parts?
Gaelle Marelise Most of the time I would just use water (daily), however occasionally I used ACV and water mixed with a few essential oils. Presently I use black soap.
Naomi Segura, can you please email me the steps and how you do the water only washing? Do you not twist your hair? My email address is: Janice.Jones.Sanders@gmail.com. Thank you.
I've watched a lot of videos on this & noticed that when people have used oils as a pre-poo it really works. It take a few month for your hair & scalp to get used to it. A lot of poeple try using twists & braids but because the hair tends to get matted the hair will tangle a lot more. If you just stick to wash & go's, protective styles at night this method should work. Adding DC protein treatment every 4-6 weeks
Thank you! I was fed up with maintaining my natural hair. I wanted to give up and just get a relaxer or something. But since I've found this channel, I feel more ready to manage it!
Idk what my hair type is 😅 but I've been water only for a while now, and I can say im absolutely in love with this method! Again. I was wanting a refresher course and this did it! Thank you!
I've never tried the water only method and I probably won't try it. I love wearing mini twists but I have to moisturize my hair especially my ends so I don't think my sebum glides down my hair fast enough.
This is the best put together video for natural hair info! Your presentation, your animations, your video examples. If I was a natural hair professor I'd give you an A++ for this PowerPoint lol.
My thoughts... I have been using the WOM and I love it. However with any method. It has to be tweeked to fit your hair needs and your lifestyle. I rinse in warm water first, followed bya quick blast of cool/cold water. I coat my hair every other day or two with my oil mixture and use some type of leave in on the last 2/3 of my hair. Gotta protect them ends. I am usually in twist and under some type of hair cover 5 out of 7 day. And hot oil treatments and deep conditioning treatments are a must. With daily scalp message and pruning, I don't have scalp issue. So I never need to put anything on my scalp. And that is how I manage Lillian. I have my grandmother hair. So I name mines in honor of her....
This method is definitely not for me, my hair gets super tangled. I literally feel like I get dreads right in the crown of my head and I have super dry hair. I need all the moisture and conditioners I can get
my hair care routine is perfectly fine for me, i just said water only will not work. i need moisturizing thick products for my hair such as shea moisture products as well as oils, like coconut oil. my hair will be a dry tangled hot mess without those things
Wow...thank you for taking the time to try this out. Your analysis is so thorough. It was great seeing the photos and video of your hair's progress throughout the experiment. I was interested in trying this method to see how well it would work to increase my sebum production. One question for clarification. In the first step, what is used to Clarify...water or ACV? Thank you!
@greenbeautychannel You should try the Water Only Method with your hair loose instead of in twists. That's how I do it and it works GREAT for me.. My hair has never been this soft, manageable and no frizz finally. This is how I do it: I create about 6 sections while rinsing my hair in the shower w/ warm water.. I massage, scritch, preen then twist or braid each section. Then repeat every 2-3 days.. Sometimes I leave the twists/braids in inbetween rinses or sometimes take them out when I leave the house. Regardless I always take them out before rinsing then retwist back up.. Therefore I never have to worry about matting or locking like you had experienced. Hope this helps someone!
+Arianna Quiero True. Works for me as well. And I see nothing wrong with using natural oils, so everyday I rinse, massage, finger detangle maybe once or twice per week, oil just the hair shaft; never my scalp, then braid. I don't take the braids down everyday so as to keep manipulation low. I use head wraps while the big braids are in.
I don't have kinky hair but it got so much more curlier after going nopoo and I LOVE IT! 😍 I'll never go back to using shampoo. It was pretty hard at first but now I know how to wash it and I never have bad hair days. I can even go swim in a lake instead of taking a shower and my hair is so clean, soft and shiny. The only thing besides water that I use is coconut oil.
i love the graphics ❤️ sis with the Afro in the shower tho.... she’s awesome ❤️ A sister in another vid mentioned something that resonates: water moisturizes but does not nourish. Its smart that you added herbal oils to your routine 🌹 seems like instinct too ❤️ you didn’t go for heavy creams and conditioners, you kept it simple 🌹 Thank you for a great, informative, helpful and super cute video 🙂
I agree that using healthy products with the massage and preening or praying hands method is best for longer hair. I also do the warm clarifying rinse before my cowash. Am now experimenting with adding baking soda to the cowash once a month. A bamboo tea or fruit tea or black tea rinse before using my conditioner, mixed with banana baby food, has been lovely. Rice rinse once a month. Carol's Daughter Mimosa Hair Honey mixed with hemp and castor oil when completely dry helps my braidouts. Using no silicones or mineral oil and only a very little to zero petroleum in products has helped these naps immensely. Rice rinse is great for growth, but drying. So be prepared to deep condition. Hope this helps.
Great video. I tried water only and initially my hair loved the constant water it was receiving but like your hair...the length of my hair suffered from no product/oils. I'm bra strap length so that was a lot of hair that was dryung and tangling up so I started using my shea butter mix and it's a lot better now. I've learned that constant water on my hair and scalp and scalp massages have greatly benefited my hair. Besides a good DIY deep conditioner and aloe Vera juice as my Leave-in, my hair does pretty good without all of the products I've bought due to Sally's BOGO. Bc I have all of these unused products I still style my dry hair with them but water, aloe juice and my shea butter mix is what MG hair is loving lately.
Make sure you have SOFT WATER for no hair method. If not get filters from Home Depot. Don’t use a boar bristle brush. Use a wood bristle brush. Use the PADS of your fingers
@@vintagefiasco2271 I recommend buying the large 5 gallon bottles at grocery stores. It’s really cheap clean water. And you can use it to wash with. You could buy a small hair wash station also. Fill it with enough water for you to wash and go at it. It’s cheaper than using water at home
I tried it, and I love it. I am 4c too. To prevent the dry ends, I added oils to the uncoated parts of my hair. I added the oil until the sebum reached that area.
Wow. Thank you for testing your method with absolutely truthful results. I really like your approach to trying something and not leaving out some of the cons. A true educator! Great visuals as well.
I water only wash everyday. I wet it with warm water, brush it under the water and seal with mousse. And I wash them once a week with a shampoo bar and I use my avocado oil as a conditioner rinse it off and put mousse. My hair never suffer of dryness now. Water only method do wonders on my hair
I would at least use black soap to wash my hair and coconut oil or olive oil to seal in moisture. I just can't do a water-only regime. Not with my job, but the regime I just described above works quite well for me.
I tried this experiment when i was in my early 20s (almost 30 years ago). I didnt wash my hair for almost 2 months!! I did wet it to brush it now and then. After two weeks my scalp was a bit itchy, but that went away. It looked good and healthy. But because of our environment (especially if you live in a city) the pollution builds up. My mother still mentions it now and then, usually in company, and it always sounds bad: ''Remember when you didnt wash your hair for months!'' and she'll leave it at that, lol...so I have to make a point of elaborating why i did it....she does then usually add it looked good.
I've done this before, with a scalp massage. I find it doesn't replace cleansing/washing but it does rid the scalp and hair of excess oil etc! I often use butters/oils in my hair and find this does work when I don't want to use African Black Soap or an ACV rinse. It helps extend the period between washing(s).
The quality of your water makes a big difference as well, i.e if you have hard or soft water. Water only works much much better in soft water as hard water can lead to gunky buildup over time. If you have hard water you can try boiling your water first or using distilled water to rinse with....
I'm currently rinsing my hair with water only. I use ACV to clarify, banana Gerber the baby food to condition, and castor oil, tea tree oil, vitamin E oil, Shea Butter to keep the moisture in my hair. My scalp used to be very dry....No More dry scalp. I just need to co-rinse in between rinsing/washing more often. Other than that I really like it.
This is my first time hearing about the "water only method". That being said I think it would have made a difference in my hair journey when I first started my natural hair journey. My big chop was, I shaved my head so this might have worked for me had I tried it then. Tfs
I was looking into the water only method and that’s how I found your channel. I’m a little hesitant because I know my hair will be very dry on the ends and lengths. Using an oil would be my best option since spreading sebum seems worth it all. I was watching more of your videos and came across the stretching video. I was curious on how this would work with sebum spreading. Will blowing dry out the sebum? Should the dry occur after scooping and spreading?
IM 4c AND WATER WORKS FOR ME. MY HAIR HATES LITERALLY EVERYTHING I PUT IN IT LOL, EXCEPT OILS... WATER AND OILS/HOT OIL TREATMENTS, DEEP CONDITIONING, AND A LITTLE (TLC) WILL DO IT. LOVE YOUR HAIR, BE NICE TO IT, DON'T TRY TO MANIPULATE IT, STOP WEARING WEAVE. LOVE YOURSELF THE WAY YOU ARE... WORK IT HONEY!
Your videos have helped me understand 'the science of hair' much better. I have dreadlocks of combination 4c and 4b and my daughter has natural strands of 4c hair. You have a new subbie.
I've been doing the water only method for more than a month now and it has been working for me. I use to have very dark, itchy scalp with bad dandruff, you know only the dish washing liquid and acv rise could solve type of dandruff . Ever since I did the WOM I haven't had dandruff or itchy scalp since, and I don't even put oil on my scalp so my sebum can produce more.
+BRWNGoddess Its only been a few weeks since I've got into WOM but I do have to admit I go a few days without washing my hair. Did you wash it every single day to stop the itchy scalp?
The water probably matters a lot more too. Alkaline or Distilled are the cleanest waters. I noticed that using the shower tap water can sometimes be a bit drying on my hair but I'm new to this. However your areas tap water is filled with flouride & chlorine it doesn't make it any better.
This video was very informative and I thank you for sharing your experience with this hair-cleansing method. I have never tried this method and don't think I will, mostly for reasons not addressed in your video: 1) I live in a major urban city and air pollution is a problem. This stuff has to be washed out of the hair. I refuse to believe that water alone will effectively do so. 2) My scalp, like my face produces a bit too much oil/sebum. I just have to clear my scalp at regular intervals of it. 3) I cannot devote so much time to my hair. Daily water cleansing and re-twisting is just too much. I don't like wigs and dislike hats and scarves. I like to wear my hair in stretched protective styles (ex. buns) or loose. "Going back to the drawing board" each day isn't attractive to me. In the summer heat, while on vacation and exposing one's hair to sea or pool water on a daily basis, I can see where frequent cleansing is a must, but for ordinary day to day. Nope.
I must say that the method I used that reaped the best results on my hair was the water only method when I did it. I have 4C low porisity hair. My hair never felt that soft or got as thick using products as it did using water only. I was shocked at how soft my hair felt. No tangles to manage. I could not believe it with all that I had heard. I'm going back to this method because it works!
So far with the water only method for ME, PROS: when I make a herbal water mix My hair has gotten thicker and it's stronger, my acne has dramatically reduced!!! CONS: my hair is frizzier, my scalp is creating dandruff I never knew I could produce because I usually just use leave-in conditioner products, and my hair dries out a lot quicker and it's harder to refresh the curls correctly.
lovely presentation and accurate info. your experience was v similar to my own, and I fully endorse your findings. WOM is great for getting to know your own hair and scalp better w/out the distraction of other products- that in itself is such a useful experience
wow thank you for this i have never tried the water only rinsing i have heard of it and some of my curlfriends currently are doing this method but i will include scrintching and preening in my reggie thank you for sharing this info
Love your videos. I appreciate hearing views from people that try the method. I have 4c armpit length hair. I cannot imagine what would happen to my hair if I did this method. Perhaps in 3 months my strands will be coated enough with sebum to protect my strands, but while I wait for the sebum to coat my hair I can only imagine the breakage. I do use the water only rinse method when I feel I have been heavy handed with my products and I don't feel like washing my hair. I keep my hair into twists and totally drench those twists in the shower to remove sweat and perhaps a layer of the product. I also massage my scalp and loosen up the sebum and work it down my strands over whatever existing product remains on my strands. If my hair is dry, sometimes drenching my hair in water helps enough remove enough product to let moisture in.I typically do not have to add more product until a day or 2. I wash my hair monthly with shampoo to clarify my strands and cowash or rinse in-between shampoos.
Thanks for sharing. There's another UA-cam vlogger who posted a video about the water only methods. I personally wouldn't do it because of the drying effect and also the time needed in order to achieve great results. However, it is great knowing that there is yet another option.
Is there a difference starting in cooler months than warm? It maybe counterintuitive to do it in the fall but I think it might be better. The cuticle of the hairs would lay down better and the sebum could go down the strands much easier. The only drawback you would have to manipulate it with heat. Say a hat/scarf/warmer water to start. Summer can be drying to the hair too. Just a thought.
I am just getting started with the water washing method and this video is very helpful. I clarified last night and I am going to water wash and twist tonight. TFS!
I tried this for a while, and, as you said, there was excessive dryness and breakage. So I stopped. I figured that it was just too much manipulation for my transitioning (shoulder length) hair. I still massage my scalp nightly, however. I think it's good for increased circulation, which is good for growth. I'll try inverting my head while massaging though.
i have straightish hair... and i have used the water only method multiple times "successfully",but i have never used warm water ever. and i only wash it once or twice a week. i end up washing it again with shampoo just to get rid of contamination or products i put over my hair. i would never advice using water daily on your hair unless you produce a lot of sebum. reason why is because water usually carries metals, salts, and other substances that can make hair brittle and damaged.
I absolutely love your videos. They are so amazingly made and so informative--filled with research and it's a huge knowledge booster if natural hair. When I first found out your channel, I binged washed most of your videos and learned so much. I'm hoping this becomes one of the more popular channels, tbh. Anyway, my 2cents: I'm happy you tried the water-only method and put honest results. You have kinkier hair than me but years ago before this method was as big as it was now, I did it and it sucked the same exact way. I didn't do the massages and so forth but I did what I thought was doable and I just saw tons and tons of breakage. but not to mention, at that time I wasn't on the healthy hair journey as I was now and didn't care so my hair broke and broke and broke but I paid it no mind (that's why it's uneven! I regret my idiotic choices). Idk how some people make the water only method work. I have 3b, 3c hair and I can't even rinse my hair with just water and just leave it there since I know it'll dry out yet my scalp is oily so it has sebum buildup in like 2-3 days. I want to know their secret or who's paying them! anyway, loved the video! Keep up the good work! I want to know what you think of washing hair more often (like naptural85's hair journey now) and why black women dont wash so often. I mean, I was taught to be like scared of water and I'm sick of it. I now wash every 2-3 days and my hair loves it and I saw more growth. I want answers!! Which one is best in your opinion and whats the science-y stuff you always have in your videos to make my mouth hang wide open in enlightenment as usual.
So glad you shared your experience with us. I don't think this is something I would try longer than a week. I have done something similar but not for more than one oe two days at a time.
This was a great video! I too have kinky hair. It doesn't do well with water only. I have to have a condish and a butter/light oil based moisturizer. Good info regarding the preen and scritch method. i probably misspelled it.
At the beginning my hair was dry. I believe it was because it didn't use oil on my hair (after every wash) until I had full sebum coverage. I got full coverage after 3 weeks. As of last month, I have been "water only washing" for 1 year. What works best for my hair is a weekly protein treatment using coconut milk and an ACV rinse every 6 weeks or so to remove excess sebum.
Great method. I have to try it before the end of this summer. I seat a LOT from the scalp right now, I believe a lot of sebum will slide much easier this way. Thanks!!
i want to take the time to thank you for the fabulous video! you did an excellent job with your animation, presentation, and explanation. i watched it with my longtime hairdresser who learned a few things herself. the most important lesson i learned was that it is NOT for my hair! i would have a dried up dreaded black ball on the top of my head if i did this method. so i want to thank you again for the incredibly well done video. i got a lot from it.
+Denyse Denyse I appreciate this video as well. But I honestly think that before deciding not to do this method you should do a bit more research and actually watch videos from women who have been successful with this method and done it for a long time and listen to the advice that they have to give. Wateronlywashing is a good place to start even though she herself doesn't claim to know everything about this method, she has really good advice for making this work. For instance, despite the name, you don't actually have to only ever use water. You can oil/butter your ends (its recommended actually) as a substitute for your sebum until you reach full coverage. You can deep condition (edible things like bananas and what not are suggested) and can even use add real proteins (like what Green Beauty herself talks about) whenever you feel like it. Its really not as strict of a method as everyone seems to think. There are many ways to do it and customize it to you so that you don't have to worry about dried up dreaded black balls LOL.
+Danica Kelly I thank you for your reply. I will look into other's videos as u suggested. thank you for the information you gave me about the other side to doing this method. I truly thought it was WATER ONLY. 😊
Sure of course! I think that's what most people think because of the name. Its what I used to think so I always assumed it wasn't for me either (sounded too hippie). LOL but yeah wateronlyhairwash and minimalist beauty as well are two good sources that I know of who have good info on the method and are worth checking out if you're interested.
I am definitely going to try this and update every weekend on my results for 1 month. Let’s see how this goes, because I really would love for my hair to grow.
Candy Rockets a.
Candy Rockets You are awesome. Thank you!
When first doing this method what should you use to clarify? I’m protein sensitive so that’s what’s making me willing to try this method. I know I’ve heard about the apple cider vinegar rinse & let’s just say it didn’t work for me.
.
I’m guessing that you stopped doing this?
That will produce a moldy smell over time.
christine1962ful
yes, standing in the shower with warmest water did bring down the sebum.
This is basically life for me every time shea moisture goes up on their price
Inever use shea Moisture does it work good on hair?
kay jay have you ever gone to ross or marshals and then to the skin care section they usually have expensive conditioners like shea moisterure and chi there. You should check it out. I know it is still expensive but it helps to save every dime. I got some shea moisture conditioner for 6$ instead of 10$ their. I hope this helps!!
@@benitajones3165 at my store they $15 plus tax
@@benitajones3165 i got a chi leave in conditioner there for $9 and a apothecary leave in spray with bioton and collagen for $7 (when its normally $22).

I'm a natural hairstylist and I just wanted to tell you how overjoyed I am that I ran into your page. It is sooo refreshing to see an accurate representation of natural hair in an animation and your hair tips are things that I'm constantly telling my clients and am honestly learning to master myself as a girl with long 4C hair. Loove you. Love your mission. Keep going girly! ❤
Thank you Chana ... where do you work out of ?
Yes, we want to keep it, don't touch it!
Clarify mean?
i know this method can be intimidating and people are worried about dry hair but mannn...if you've never felt your hair with a decent amount of sebum coverage root to tip its INCREDIBLE. i havent found a product more protective and softening than my sebum. the baggy method and rubbing braid or twists ends on your svalp can help this along quicker. Give it a month. shes got great takeaways. ITS SO WORTH A TRY!!
Thank you for the tip about rubbing the ends of braids/twists on the scalp! I hadn't thought of that!
Yes it’s definitely worth it! I started almost 2 years ago and grew my hair from BSL to hip length with very strong supple protected hair! That’s how well it has worked for me. I would never have imagined hair care for dense coarse low porosity 4B hair like mine could be so simple and effective. Like man!
It's been 2 months I started washing my hair with just water but my hair us falling off alot!! Any tips?
This def works!! My male cousin who had a fade haircut most of his life, grew his hair close to mid back length in 1 1/2-2 years after letting it grow out, and all he put in his hair daily was water from the shower. His hair grew faster than mine and I was using a variety of store bought products!!
Oh wow seeing this comment has given me hope! I buzzed my natural hair off recently and I'm starting from scratch again. I'm planning to do the water only method and I figure that since I'm starting with barely any hair, getting sebum coverage shouldn't be a problem. 1 1/2 years is goals!
@@taryn.b update please
Your editing skills and the use of powerpoint slides are great.
lovehope3753 I agree. I'm always blown away. This girl deserves more credit.
This is my first time watching her channel. I was blown away by it!!! Just wonderful and joy to watch.

Hello dear sis that is wonderful day welldan
Man your kids are gonna have no problems with their hair.
I think for me the water only method might work better with shower water filter to remove the hard water chemicals. When using a water softener my hair feels fantastic and drys less frizzy. Just a thought!
Yes! I have used filtered shower water and distilled water on my hair for about 2 years now with amazing results.
@@flowergirle9250 where uh buy distilled water

If you're using products then it's not WATER ONLY.
How long did you do this for? Still going?
I absolutely love how you explain the science behind all of these hair crazes so we can make informed decisions before we try things out.
Love love love your page, keep up the good work!
I've been doing this method 6 months and it's done wonders for me. I used to hate wash days when I used to use shampoos and products. My hair used to tangle alot and I had a hard time getting the moisture balance right. I used to be a product junkie as well. No product i've ever used has worked better than my own sebum. My hair is the strongest it's ever been and it doesn't break. It's rough in the beginning when you first start, but it gets better the more you do it.
Naturalle Tanyah I totally agree!
My hair is so thick and beautiful with the WOM!
Naturalle Tanyah so when your sebum reaches towards the ends, won’t the shampoo wash all of that away again?
Please I'm curious. Can you give me your detailed step by step regime? I can send my email address if you prefer that. I really want to know how you did yours.
Yes I been water only just shy of 2 years now, and my hair is definitely stronger and better for it. It seemed to help sort out common natural hair issues for me- shrinkage, tangling, fairy knots. It also grew from BSL to hip length which is the longest my hair has been in my adult life or at any point in my nearly 18-year natural hair journey.
@@flowergirle9250 wow. Please one more question if you don't mind. When you wash your hair won't you have to start the whole process all over again?
Trinican Bee
Awe u are doing the water only method? I didn't know that. I hope to see your videos again soon (^-^)
***** Yep! I really like it; it's so simple. & Thanks, I need to get in the swing of things again.
Trinican Bee Are you still continuing on with this routine? If so, how is it so far?
My experience with the water only method was successful and I have kinky curly 4c hair. I guess one person's experience is not another's experience.
I tried it again without daily rinses and was successful. I wanted to make sure the first time I tried it was to the book. But after that, I tweaked it a little to suit my hair better.
Really looking forward to an updated video soon.
Will you be doing an update soon about the tweaks you did so that the water only method worked for you?
LiGlisa Chae, So true I love the WOM and so does my hair!
What is this overnight deep conditioner you speak of?
This is honestly THE BEST explanation I've seen of the basics of water-only no poo. Thanks for making this video!
My hair would be dusty and dry as a box of rice crispies!

Do you still follow the wom?
It's super interesting to read the comments of people saying this would never work for them.
Kim Julien lol you never know until you try, try and try again lol
Listen to your hair right away when it begins to shows you signs. Why not use oil or a homemade conditioner when needed along with water only washing? In the end, it will hurt you less than ignoring the signs that your hair is in need of something more just to risk seeing whether or not things pan out well.
^^^ This is what I personally learned from this video. Thank you so much for such an abundance of information but for keeping it sweet and to the point!!! I feel much better educated about this method. Thank you, thank you.
I've heard you should use oils in your hair if it gets dry during this method.
yes you can, you don't necessarily need to follow this method to the key
Heyyyy!!!!😂
In fact you should notice that you are not even shedding half as much
as you did when
you used product.
Not so with water only washing... because you're using water.. only. haha
My hair has never been so soft and dense.

If I was a natural hair professor I'd give you an A++ for this PowerPoint lol.
just started this method, I wash every 2-4 days, twists my hair when at home and use oil and one natural leave in conditioner on the ends.
Your videos are always so informative. This is easily the best explanation of the water only method I've come across. Great job!
Ok so can I just say that I love your calming delivery. Thank you so much for the comprehensive videos. I for one really need and appreciate them.
Yes very informative and also the little girl in the animation is so cute!!!
Thank you :-)
My thoughts...
I've been hearing a lot about this method for a while now. I doubt it'll work for me but I'm still happy you addressed this. Thanks!
This method is definitely not for me, my hair gets super tangled. I literally feel like I get dreads right in the crown of my head and I have super dry hair. I need all the moisture and conditioners I can get
Liz Pena Then maybe the Curly Girl method is something for you c: I use it as well, and this works better for me as a curly girl
Silverbleedy I've been using the curly girl method for about 3 years, best thing that happened to my hair !
my hair care routine is perfectly fine for me, i just said water only will not work. i need moisturizing thick products for my hair such as shea moisture products as well as oils, like coconut oil. my hair will be a dry tangled hot mess without those things
Liz Pena
Then I'm 3 years late with my comment lol! I love the curly girl method myself as well, finally something that works for me c:
lol, yes its amazing. i recommend that method or simple techniques to anyone and everyone i know.
I like the word “scrinch.” It sounds exactly like what the action is. It’s a nice sound effect~ ☺️
This is how I do it:
I create about 6 sections while rinsing my hair in the shower w/ warm water..
+Arianna Quiero Hey Arianna, thank for the advice !
Green Beauty Channel ™ Your welcome
Lydia Lindén Yes I use oils too! to seal in the water after I rinse.
As far as detangling tools for kinkier hair textures, wooded brushes and wooden combs. They help move the oils down and help loosen it off the scalp.
It's interesting because I did this during the summer of 95 and I truly saw growth. Thanks for the reminder.
i love the graphics ❤️ sis with the Afro in the shower tho.... she’s awesome ❤️
A sister in another vid mentioned something that resonates: water moisturizes but does not nourish. Its smart that you added herbal oils to your routine 🌹 seems like instinct too ❤️ you didn’t go for heavy creams and conditioners, you kept it simple 🌹 Thank you for a great, informative, helpful and super cute video 🙂
Instead of the water only method, I water rinse my hair between cowashes and shampoo periodically.
Bc I have all of these unused products I still style my dry hair with them but water, aloe juice and my shea butter mix is what MG hair is loving lately.
i use the same products along with a clay wash and/or diy deep conditioners and found it works.
Make sure you have SOFT WATER for no hair method. If not get filters from Home Depot. Don’t use a boar bristle brush. Use a wood bristle brush. Use the PADS of your fingers
I have hard water and can't afford a filter, so what can I do? Can I just rinse my hair in hard water.
Works well for my hair, I did it for a good 5 months and it was bomb! However I do moisturise with shea butter after that's all
I like this method with the addition of some oils; light use on the ends in the beginning. I believe this is the best natural method.
Yeeessss! Just use one product that can detangle & control frizz curls! It works! I did it
I've done this before, with a scalp massage.
Wooden bristles (bamboo) works better on my hair after I've rinsed for the day and my hair is damp. It helps spread the sebum too.
Awesome video as always. I have always wondered about this method.
DiscoveringNatural Thank You :-)
Your videos have helped me understand 'the science of hair' much better.
+Amy Lindsberg I wash my hair every 3-4 days because I also have low porosity hair so I need water to moisturize my hair
+Amy Lindsberg I wash my hair every 3-4 days because I also have low porosity hair so I need water to moisturize my hair
Why did you stop?
So far with the water only method for ME,
PROS: when I make a herbal water mix My hair has gotten thicker and it's stronger, my acne has dramatically reduced!!!
Indeed .. well said. I was able to get to know my hair and scalp a lot more. Glad I tried it.
i've been wondering about this method!! can't express just how helpful this was.
wow thank you for this i have never tried the water only rinsing i have heard of it and some of my curlfriends currently are doing this method but i will include scrintching and preening in my reggie thank you for sharing this info
My hair is too dry to do water only...but this was helpful in confirming the need for moisturizers.
+Denyse Denyse Thanks, I'm glad to hear that !
No intention of ever going water only, but I watched this video to the end because your graphics are BAWSE!!!
Absolutely love the animations in your videos, subscribed!
I am definitely going to try this and update every weekend on my results for 1 month. Let’s see how this goes, because I really would love for my hair to grow.
