Finally UA-cam recommends me something relevant to my interests: a guy laid up in bed from an injury buying an old pro Canon body. Not even kidding. I picked up a 1Ds Mk III from MPB. Eight grand worth of spine injections later I can finally go out and use it. I enjoy the big, hand-friendly grips. The shutter fails occasionally on strobe shots, but works most of the time. I enjoy telling myself I bought one of those 6000 bodies the guys with the wiffle-bat-sized white telephotos at the sports games use...I just had to wait for 17 years of depreciation!
I have the same camera and it only had 7,000 plus actuations on the shutter. I believe they sold for as high as your spinal injections. Glad you're better.
I was searching for a old dslr and decided I wanted a pro dslr. after seeing your videos on the 1d2 and seeing someone selling a like new condition 1d2n, I went ahead and bought it. I am just so happy now, thank you for your videos!
That's so cool @philou9102! Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you found the video helpful, and it’s awesome to hear that the camera has worked out for you.
I have an old Canon EOS 1D classic in mint condition. I purchased it off of Ebay with the nifty 50mm mkII and a bunch of paperwork, accessories and cleaning stuff that came in the camera bag for the the low price of $150.00. I guess no one was paying any attention to the auction at the time. I don't even use it much. But when I did, I was surprised how good the images came out. I loved it so much, I immediately purchased a EOS 1Dc. Both were purchased after I purchased my A7RIV and saw how boring mirrorless cameras can be.
Started my old camera collecting journey during the pandemic. I’m mainly a Sony shooter. I got three Canon 5D MK I cameras, one kinda battered but fully working, the other two are like new. Then got a 1D IV, then a 5D Mark II. They are all great in their own respect, but I just love the images of the 1D IV, they feel so organic. The autofocus is better compared to all above mentioned cameras and it only had 17K actuations, it was a private sell on eBay. That APS-H sensor also gets rid of any lens soft corners so it’s a nice workaround. Love your narration and voice, I could hear you for hours talking about anything. Waiting for that Canon 1Ds video. I watched this having just woken up and having coffee on a cold winter morning in Greece. Lovely start of the day. Thanks YT notifications, sometimes you recommend something good indeed!
Thanks so much @PadPoet for the kind words! I’m thrilled to know you enjoyed the video. You’ve put together an amazing arsenal of camera bodies there. And Greece must be an incredible place to be, as a photographer, I would imagine. Granted, I hear the same thing sometimes about New Mexico USA, that I must love living near all the beautiful desert landscapes, but in reality I feel like I live in an ugly dirt hole. I guess anything can seem beautiful when you don't have access to it, and anything can seem boring when you do. Still though, I feel like I couldn't possibly get bored shooting in Greece. It's extremely high on my list of places I want to go with a camera.
@@NicholasHornbrook You're welcome, just telling it as it is 😃 Greece is nice if you travel or if you don't live in the big concete cities. I'm currently living on an island so the scenery is nice. But it's way easier in the spring and summer. Again, keep it up with these videos, it's a nice mix of relaxation watching time and information for me. At some point in 2025 I'll try and find a minty used 40D, it's a nice camera for the little money it goes for nowadays.
Hah, nice @basedhalcyon. I think you'll love it! I'm actually hoping to have the opportunity to further my Nikon education soon. I regret that all of my photography has been so Canon centric. I'm hoping to broaden out a little.
Your videos are pure gold! I bought my first DSLR camera in 2007 and it was (and I still use it occasionally) a Canon 1D. It comes with 2 batterys, charger and DC Coupler DC-E1 external power feed-system. It was love at first shot. It's hard to describe but the feel of that shutter release and that shutter sounds so nice. With vintage lenses split-image focusing screen is handy to have. Nice camera indeed 😊.

That’s fair @gohumberto. To me they’re both great cameras. I’d be happy with either, or both. Agreed, I prefer full frame too, but I also don’t mind the 1.3x crop all that much. Especially if I shoot this camera with a longer lens, plus a full frame camera which I’ll pair with a wider lens, rather than switching between lenses on one body. The 1DS Mark II is more directly comparable to the 5D, and I feel it compares favorably. But it’s largely a form factor thing, thus just personal preference. I get why the 5D is so beloved. It’s great! I’m more of a 1D fan though.
@@NicholasHornbrook I can understand why you like the 1D (I mean I bought one myself last year). I have a few "classic" DSLRs but the 1D2 just felt too old given it's size and weight. If I'm going to lug a 1D around then I want at least 12Mp. I may consider a 1Ds variant at some point. The 1Ds mk3 is now $500 and it was $7,000 at launch. That's just too good to miss I think. 21Mp in the ultimate Pro body!!! Great cameras never stop being great cameras and it's half the price of an iPhone FFS.
After some months hunting I managed to find a 1D in fantastic condition, and a 1Ds. What wonderful things they are. Really enjoy these videos, thanks a lot 👍
Hey thanks! I’m jealous @todayshorse. I was just looking for a 1D again today, but only found the same beat up and / or overpriced options on eBay that I’ve been seeing for months.
I love this! I started out with a 1Ds Mark II that belonged to someone else, but I eventually bought it a few years later. I preferred it to use vs the 5D Mark II, which I bought as soon as it was launched for it's high ISO performance and video function, but the ergonomics, nor the autofocus system, ever sat right with me. I did pick up a 1D III for sports but it never felt the same, and after upgrading to the 5D III (glad to have the AF system back!) and a 5D IV, I eventually got back into the pro body game with the 1DX II (and the R5, just like the 5D Mark II, has never felt right to me). I'm looking forward to hearing more about the 1Ds II. I still have mine, with all it's sentimental value, and I still use it on occasion and it amazes me how well I can create modern looking images if I do my part right. What batteries are you using? Have you had a chance to play with the R1 yet?
I shoot with a X2D Hasselblad and canon R5c and my next camera will be a 1ds II or III. as a dedicated “overseas” camera. Plan to snag it with a 24-70 potentially or a 24-105.
I have several of these in my camera collection. All of them work except for a duplicate, which I will attempt to repair. So far, I have the Canon EOS-1Ds, EOS-1Ds MK II, and the MKIII. I should be getting an EOS-1D to add to the EOS-1D, MK IIn, and the 1D-MK IV. The only shortcoming that I have with the first two 1Ds is the small screens, which is due to my old age and sight. Other than that they are great cameras to play around with. I also have the EOS-5D and the 5D MK II. Eventually, I will get the middle cameras of all of them for my collection. Right now I don't see myself getting hold of any of the newer Canons in the ID X series due to my budget. My wife keeps asking me how many cameras do I need. It has nothing to do with need, just want for fun.
It's so odd how some people have constant issues buying used gear that turns out to be bad, and others, like me, rarely have any. I can buy "untested" gear on ebay and 90% of the time it's perfectly fine or workable for the price I paid. I've had nothing but positive experiences with mpb and keh so far, but others never get their items as described. Very strange 🤔
A very low-tech method @OUoht14l. It's just my phone camera shoved up against the viewfinder, which of course blocks the viewfinder, so I have to use the video feed on the phone screen to compose the image. I use an articulating arm that you can put into whatever position you want, and then twist the knob to lock it down. It's always a struggle though, to keep it from moving around, so generally a bit of tape is also a good idea.
You are right in that we are spoiled with cheap options. I've got myself an entire vintage Nikon lens collection that fits both my 1959 Nikon F and my 10 year old D750. It's truly inexpensive for what you get. Also shot with a Canon 6D and a 85mm f/1.2 last summer I had picked up as a kit for $700!
This was a wonderful video. Relaxing...cathartic even. You narration and cinematography was great. Subscribing cause I am very interested in the 1Ds video to come...I shoot an R/R5 at work and a 5D classic for fun (actually just bought a second one)...I also have a 6D mk ii but I am trying to sell that as it just feels too new school for me even thought the features are convenient.
Lovely video! I really like your narration, and more techically, how you filmed the viewfinder. I have a Canon 1D (the 4 megapixel one) and it's my favourite digital camera of all time. Just feels so good in hand and everything feels intuitive. My only gripe is the battery life, which is not great even with new aftermarket batteries. How do you find the battery life on 1D Mark II? Now I'm thinking to get 1DX (a much never camera) because the prices are ridiculously low now (on MPB).
I hope people dont rediscover how good the older DSLRs still are. I love the pieces you can get for reasonable prices because everyone feels the need to move to the newer systems.
I have a 1D Mark II that I bought from KEH. Unfortunately, I'm gonna have to send it in to have the mirror/prism replaced, because there is dust, spots I can't seem to get rid of that shows up on my photos. Another reason to lust after that R3 mirrorless I can't afford.
This is so interesting, modern cameras although amazing, seeing them in their full glory, is almost impossible for a client. They are compressed on social media, printers are mostly 300DPI, so who sees the full quality? Only the photographer in most situations. Everyone is now wanting vintage lenses that says it all!
I bought a Hasselblad on MPB (marked as slightly used) it has a huge electric issue lens not connecting and screen flickering really annoying but I returned it thats good. It’s still a pain in the ass
Purchase 1d ccd and 1d2n about 10 years ago and only cost about 200GBP total those years and really like them Sometimes 1D have better white balance than my 5d3 maybe that wb sensor. The biggest problem is I can't find them a modern version of battery 😢
And one thing you can help them to modern is to get a SD to CF adapter , then get a as card with push to phone function like eyefi ( they closed already) and with that combo you can have photo auto delivery to camera and you can check the jpg (where review function are zero on the camera body)
...one day, I'll add one, along with a D2HS - but right now I am still using a 1DX and a D700 when like you not using modern stuff - I need to have the room in my heart/head to properly appreciate another older body before doing anything, so, no hurry. So glad you found one - I could see the potential in the images from the previous vids, so, it is amazing that you even bothered to risk it!
Those are both great bodies. I would go for a D2X over the D2h - even the guys back then thought the D2h was a step backwards from the D1h&D1x for image quality. It was Nikon's only in-house sensor design that used neither CMOS nor CCD.
I'm sure the 1DX is an amazing camera @DrZeeple. I've never used it. When the 5D line emerged, I had to abandon the 1D line. One day when all of this stuff gets cheap, I'll go back and see what I missed. I have very limited Nikon experience, but I think I did some shooting on a D700, several times. I was the only Canon shooter in an all-Nikon studio at the time. We were photographing a lot of babies, I didn't own a macro lens, so I was using a D700 for macro shots (I am pretty sure). It was good! A solid camera. Thanks! Yeah, I didn't imagine I would buy another 1D2 after all the issues last time around. I had even sold off all of my best EF lenses. But then I was lying around, bored, trying to recover from an injury, and got sucked back in. But I also realized that maybe sticking to cheaper lenses was a good thing. Maybe that will keep me from spending way too much money on fun old nostalgia-driven camera purchases, if I just have a rule for myself that I won't spend more than a few hundred dollars per lens, then I won't have to feel so guilty about it.
@@NicholasHornbrook you can get some great bang for buck EF lenses these days. The 24-105 f4 L can be found for under 250 now, the 40mm 2.8 is amazing image quality and very small, a Tamron 35 or 45 f1.8 are great lowlight stabilized lenses used. 50mm 1.8 just works. Something to keep in mind is that over 3 lenses you're just lugging extra weight for almost no reason. Keep it simple!
Another great video. Thanks Nicholas. It really does seem like the right camera to fill that film/digital divide from your images. I recently picked up a 5DS. Wondering if you ever got a chance to use one or the 5DSR? Thoughts? Thanks.
Thanks @jonnoarmo. Oh nice! I haven't. I'm super interested. The price is creeping down thankfully, but it's still too high for me. Even the rental price is a bit steep. Renting it for a week costs more than buying a 5D. Ouch. That's a camera that really held it's value. How are you liking it?
@@NicholasHornbrook Yeah, it really has held its value, it's kind of a specialty thing. The only EF camera with 50 megapixels though. Plus it had a much fancier light meter than the 5Dmk3. I'd be tempted if I did more large landscape photos that could really benefit from it. If you compare it to the 5D mk4 it's not all that much worse considering they're one year apart.
Beautiful video. I want a Nikon Df, but then they're $1000usd used and that's ridiculous money for such old kit. I've never dabbled in Canon-land. They're actually the only major brand I've never owned....mostly because their lenses zoom backwards 🤣 I jest, because my Olympus kit is the same way. I'd like to tinker with old DSLRs again as well. Glad you're enjoying this journey.
I had a DF for a bit and while I liked it, I sold it thinking it would depreciate like crazy down the line so not a worthy investment...truth be told I'm more of a canon fan boy though so have 2 5D's
@codyallen3729 yeah the biggest thing that holds me back is that I don't want to drop a lot of money on an old DSLR that already has 200K shutter actuations and the rubber grip is melting.
@@DennisK47 pretty easy to avoid if you shop with notable sellers online. MPB gives shutter count, Usedphotopro gives shutter count and has really detailed photos, and KEH has slipped a little bit but anything excellent+ or above I am still having good luck with. Most recent 5D I got was on ebay and as described, it's immaculate and was refurb by canon allegedly.
New gear just doesnt do it for me anymore. I have used most off the brands professionally in 30 years, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Leica, Panasonic and one thing is that they are all the same. Canon can make a 1d mark whatever and it is still just a camera. The technology has plateaued like smartphones and unless some alien technology is introduced in these devices, the camera you already own is all you need. I still use the 1D series of bodies, they a bullet proof but the photos are still just photos like the other brands. Glass, well there is a different kettle of fish for another conversation. Glass is what photography is about.
I've got a nikon D1, the first "proper" DSLR. Its cool. My 5D original is much more my type, though. Simplicity and image quality combined. The autofocus is very true though. The center point is.. usable. A 1dsmkii is more or less the 5D on steroids. I dont really buy into the hype of old cameras look better, or newer makes better images. People complain about the jpegs of new cameras and never dive into all the jpeg settings and custom or preset white balance.. a 5D on fauthful and modern camera on the same wont look very different. Try it if you want. There are some aspects that are different like the CFA dyes in old cameras were often pretty good, but nodern oves are very close too. There were always outliers with poor color accuracy like the foveon. However, old cameras are suvh a good bang for buck and you can afford absolutely pro tier indestructible bodies for peanuts and they've almost always had amazing image quality if you've a quality image for it to capture. I use an R6 for fast things like birds, or a 5D for my cheaper than film camera sort of experience. I think the 5D mk ii is probably one of the best value cameras you can get today for good pictures if you can put in the work. Or maybe a 6D if you can live with less overall color accuracy but pleasing color and great low light thanks to the cfa dye choice, among other things l like much more sensitive center point. The 40d and 50d are also stupidly cheap for great cameras but I prefer the full frame and possibility for good film era FF glass. Yeah, anyways. Good cameras are good, full stop. They always will be.
Yeah, agreed @mikafoxx2717. It's fair to say my love of the early 1D line has more to do with nostalgia than superior image quality. That being said, I do find the jpegs more appealing. Raws are a push, because then it just comes down to my crappy editing skills. But I'm starting to wonder if I like less dynamic range, which would be weird, because I’ve never heard that feeling expressed by anyone ever. There's something genuinely off-putting about the jpegs coming out of my R and R5 to me, but I'm not 100 percent sure what it is. And of course jpegs coming out of a modern camera don’t actually have more dynamic range, but modern image processors are cramming more information into the 8bit canvas, at least that’s my understanding. I have spent some time creating jpeg presets, “Picture Styles,” I think Canon calls them. The fault is entirely my own I realize, but I haven’t had much success there. I’ve created a black and white Picture Style that I really love, but haven’t cracked color. I’ve purchased a few, and while I liked things about them, I also disliked things about them. Wish I could just take one of the ones I purchased and modify it, but they are locked to prevent editing.
@NicholasHornbrook The lower dynamic range I would say is a bingo. I think that may be half of what people like about older cameras. Possibly. Slide film has a dynamic range of maybe 5-6 stops, and people loved it. There's an inherent contrast and punch and it matches the dyanamic range of our monitors and prints without rounding things off as much and cramming more shadow and highlight detail in. That's just a guess, though. For Canon I like the faithful profile or landscape and usually use a fixed white balance of 5500k or cloudy for a slide film vibe. I might tone down the contrast one or two and boost the saturation one or two as well. Depends what I'm going for. I just like using these old but gold cameras. I've been tempted by the 1D line before too, and I have the EOS 1n film camera as an analogue to one. I truly think very little progressed after the 5D mk2 or 6D though for imaging capabilities, the 5D 3 only improved video and brought the 1d autofocus chip into the 5D line. The 5D 3 added better live view/video focusing, but then a mirrorless would do better for that. So if anything stick to the 5D mk2 and get a 5DS if you want the extra resolution, imo. Get a mirrorless or 1d if you need the extra fps or a mirrorless and small lenses lightweight, like an M50 or RP or such. And pretty much any brand is good, I just like Canon's ergonomics and have EF lenses. Also have a Nikon D610 but the grip is a bit anemic compared to a 6D, even if it's a bit better for fps or autofocus and dynamic range.. I don't like cramming HDR anyways because you lose all the inherent contrast of the scene as I said earlier. It would only look good on an HDR display to match at its native contrast ratio.
Nothing wrong with these good machines but if some have played with AI, the creations made can be like these generic landscapes/nature since there's a plentiful amount of data on these. And it's unfortunate to say unless you're trying to shoot unique subjects like people. Never love a machine, it's just another tool in the belt

How did you film the viewfinder?
A very low-tech method @OUoht14l. It's just my phone camera shoved up against the viewfinder, which of course blocks the viewfinder, so I have to use the video feed on the phone screen to compose the image. I use an articulating arm that you can put into whatever position you want, and then twist the knob to lock it down. It's always a struggle though, to keep it from moving around, so generally a bit of tape is also a good idea.
@@NicholasHornbrooksir the footage is way too perfect ✨ , i was thinking it done by using external recorder via hdmi but this is not a digital feed
I could listen to you for hours.
What a wonderful video, thank you so much
Lovely video!
I feel the same about the Nikon D3.
Just bought one.
I bought a Hasselblad on MPB (marked as slightly used) it has a huge electric issue lens not connecting and screen flickering really annoying but I returned it thats good. It’s still a pain in the ass
Purchase 1d ccd and 1d2n about 10 years ago and only cost about 200GBP total those years and really like them
Sometimes 1D have better white balance than my 5d3 maybe that wb sensor.
I love mine!!!
...one day, I'll add one, along with a D2HS - but right now I am still using a 1DX and a D700 when like you not using modern stuff - I need to have the room in my heart/head to properly appreciate another older body before doing anything, so, no hurry.
Have you ever used the earlier canon / Kodak dcs2000 based off the Eos 1N?
Another great video. Thanks Nicholas. It really does seem like the right camera to fill that film/digital divide from your images. I recently picked up a 5DS. Wondering if you ever got a chance to use one or the 5DSR? Thoughts? Thanks.
Absolutely fantastic camera.
They're actually the only major brand I've never owned....mostly because their lenses zoom backwards 🤣
I jest, because my Olympus kit is the same way.
Love - 13:11 frame
New gear just doesnt do it for me anymore. I have used most off the brands professionally in 30 years, Canon, Sony, Fuji, Leica, Panasonic and one thing is that they are all the same. Canon can make a 1d mark whatever and it is still just a camera. The technology has plateaued like smartphones and unless some alien technology is introduced in these devices, the camera you already own is all you need. I still use the 1D series of bodies, they a bullet proof but the photos are still just photos like the other brands. Glass, well there is a different kettle of fish for another conversation. Glass is what photography is about.
Even though I've owned a 1DX MKiii since 2020...I ACHE for a 1DS MKiii so much it HURTS!!! 🤕
MPB's ratings are pretty sus
Give me 3” rear lcd with high resolution. And now we are talking. No to that small lcd :(
I've got a nikon D1, the first "proper" DSLR.
@NicholasHornbrook
The lower dynamic range I would say is a bingo.
Nobody loves the 1d mkII like you do! Lol😂
I came here to watch video about camera not to feel
Nothing wrong with these good machines but if some have played with AI, the creations made can be like these generic landscapes/nature since there's a plentiful amount of data on these. And it's unfortunate to say unless you're trying to shoot unique subjects like people. Never love a machine, it's just another tool in the belt
