Some of the hens wear saddles, because they tend to lose some feathers when the rooster mounts them. The roosters feet have big spurs. Eventually the hens may end up with bare patches of skin on their backs and shoulders, that's why chicken farmers invented saddles! Some people make saddles or aprons themselves, but I wanted something very sturdy and weather proof, and these come with shoulder pads.
