    We have been raising 3 chicks in the apartment. Hope they are hens so we could keep them for a long long time.

    Lovely birds you have here..amazing..but what's the purpose of those shields like on their backs ?

      Some of the hens wear saddles, because they tend to lose some feathers when the rooster mounts them. The roosters feet have big spurs. Eventually the hens may end up with bare patches of skin on their backs and shoulders, that's why chicken farmers invented saddles! Some people make saddles or aprons themselves, but I wanted something very sturdy and weather proof, and these come with shoulder pads. The hens don't seem to be bothered by them, they can still fly up to the roosts, run, dust bathe and everything. (I made a video about the Down Under saddle.) Thanks for watching!
