Some dude's don't realize how important volume is for strength, even if you aren't going to failure.

I think most realize it but rather do lots of sets of low reps like 10x3 or 6x6

In strongman they have deadlifts for reps as an event most of the time. Doing high rep deadlifts in training has worked exceptionally well as a peaking strategy for both deads for reps and a single. The recovery from one of those all out sets can be absolutely brutal though. Pete knows what he’s talking about.

It takes about a week before you're back on your A-game, but I think these have a huge payoff in terms of upping one's one rep max!

First time i got 660lbs deadlift all i did prior to this lift for about 3-4months was max rep with 400lbs one giant set. My max before this was 620lbs. Wasnt aiming for a new max or anything really. Just wanted to push my limits and see how many i could do with 400lbs. And one day i decided to feel my way up and see how the strength was going since i felt my glutes and hamstrings really blew up with that rep approach. And just liftet 660 pretty easy without any belt or nothing.

I'm not surprised at all! I'd say 12x525 would translate to 660 for me. Trying to get there!

I tried 315 for 20 just because and there’s just something so rewarding about rep work with dead’s.

I'd say this rings more true for shorter torso and longer arms. See it all the time with super high work capacity on deadlifts with these leverages.
But no harm in lighter hypertrophy work regardless of level or leverage.

I remember Chris Hickson R.I.P and George Leeman do high rep deadlifts. And with heavy weight. Back in 2010, 2011 and 2012 even. They were touch and go deadlifts though.
Did high rep deadlifts as a 17 year old. Did 315lbs for 10 reps, 365lbs for 1 rep, 405lbs for 1 rep conventional. Back in 2009.
    When I was 19 I did 405lbs for 15 reps and 405lbs for 16 reps easy. Back in 2011.
I also saw you do high rep deadlifts at the time.
I balanced both high rep and low rep squats and deadlifts and every compound lift.
Not only did I get stronger and built work capacity.
Also added muscle mass to my frame and got me jacked.

It really is a great way to get jacked and get stronger! Hickson loved them!

The last time I went for a PR on the deadlift, I just wasn't ready for the weight. I was super frustrated so I decided "I'll do a backoff set at 405". Got down on the bar and just decided to GO with no stopping place in mind. Managed to get 7 reps, and on the 8th rep I had a minor upper glute tweak but I finished the rep. The minor tweak limited me for a couple weeks but MAN it felt good to know that I could just fucking OWN 4 plates like that. I've done the same before with 315 for 20. AMRAPs may be rough to recover from, but they sure do build confidence. It just feels good to know you can handle heavy loads for big sets and not just feel afraid of really going for it. Love to hear that one of the best deadlifters ever signs off on AMRAPs. Just gotta watch the form and avoid injury.
For those curious, I'm 155 bodyweight, my best pull was 465 (3x BW), and I pull conventional.

I've only ever done high-rep deadlifts, I wouldn't know any other way. All because I followed Wendlers 5/3/1 and majority of the time on your 5+ week you'll hit 12 reps, then 3+ is around 10-12 reps and 1+ is nearly 10 reps. Doing a year of that added nearly 100lbs to my deadlift. Went from 365 for 5 to 435 for 6. It's one all out set, once per week.

About 2 weeks after a max single, I can do high reps for about 3 weeks straight and need to stop for a few weeks cause I can no longer function. However, the carry over to the next 6 week cycle to max is apparent.

    • @peterubishfitness
      @peterubishfitness  9 місяців тому

It takes a full week to recover in my opinion. You almost have to just limit it to that one set per week.

Deadlifted hard and heavy lots of high reps for over 20yrs. Just can’t really do them anymore. Too much wear and tear. Hit 405x16 dead stop no straps on iron plates when I was 38 though. Loved reps

doing it right now as a natural lifter, every weak. 505 x20 on the plan in a few days. wanne build up to 660 x20 lol. Mainly doing it bc my joints can't keep up withthe weights so I have to progress in some other way. I leave like 2 RiR bc it allready takes me one whole week to recover :D bt mainly to prevent falling over while getting dizzy while strapped in. happend one time, fell on my head, not fun but kept training right after ^^
I don't like bounce and go at all but I slightly touch and go like keeping tension for every rep, a bit like leeman did with high reps and benefited him really well. but will incorporate dead stops in another block aswell.^
yep, noticed the huge difference in ur biceps right away! I also work at the home office outside in the yard in between training sets while the dogs get their outside fun at the same time lol. I was running 100+ km a week several years ago. Like to incorporate some, too again. Just doing some nature parcour stuff and light beach sprints with the dogs lately and some random rock climbing at the shores. Builds great functionality and works the stabilizers really well doing it at 300 lbs bodyweight lol.

It is so difficult to tell how many you have in the tank right around 80% 1RM. There have been times where I go to pull 455 for 5 or 6 and that first one feels so terrible that I talk myself out of it. When I finally said screw it I want to know I’m going to go til I drop at 455 I pulled the first and again I thought no way am I even getting 6 and yet once I had the mentality right I ended up pulling 11. I think the issue is since deadlifts start at the most difficult point that first rep psyches people out of going for a higher rep set. Even with dead stop reps the first rep is still almost always the most difficult, so once you break that mindset it’s amazing how far you can go, but if the defeatist mindset kicks in before you drop that first rep down you are screwed.

Ive discovered for myself doing deficit deadlifts standing on a 25lb plate doing 3-4 sets of 6-10 reps twice a week. My max was stuck at 495 for a couple years. When i started this training, My max went from 495 to 525 in 4 months. My back feels absolutely bulletproof. Also been doing power cleans and front squats like crazy which may have also played a part

High reps 15-30+ reps for all compound main lifts helped me gain the most amount of muscle & strength following George Leemans style of training. Then peaking towards the 3-5 repsmonths later feels like lift work instead of feeling dizzy & gassed afterwards

Yeah, the problem is recovery. I remember doing high rep snatch grip deadlifts for volume after doing heavy regular deadlifts earlier during the same training session and I was just fried for a few days. That said, my approach wasn't exactly smart either.

Ironically I watched your Doucette interview at work this morning and you guys talked about his 405 deadlift rep record. Seems to me that this actually makes a lot of sense for you to be doing from both a physical and a mental standpoint with the half around the corner. Would I personally be excited about an AMRAP deadlift day? If you didn't put 45 deg. extensions or squats with it I could see it being pretty entertaining.

As someone who has always tried to juggle endurance and strength i really appreciate the new content here. Its an inspiring journey you are sharing! Im going to have to try amrap deadlifts again. As a lanky lifter i found i could always do more than my reps indicated. Think i hit 475x10 but never maxxed more than 580. Going to try lower weight ranges and longer pause this time see what that does.
