  • Foam in your hot tub's water is never a good sign. Possible causes include high pH, soft water, high TDS, and overall poor chemical and filter maintenance.

    TDS aren't affected by filtering; they are dissolved. If you put water on glass and let it evaporate, the residue let behind are the solids coming out of solution. The only way to lower TDS is to replace the water (or use reverse osmosis, but you're not going to do THAT)

    Great channel sir!
    Just bought a house that has a artic spa summit hot tub.
    It was empty when we bought the house, we assumed it would need some TLC lol!
    Oh ya, I was correct.
    Replaced the heater (did a continuity test and a short test first, it was a short) installed the new heater and the heater wouldn’t heat.
    Pump one high speed doesn’t work, low speed does work though. Tested the high speed capacitor for capacitance and short. Everything checked out from what I can see on the capacitor. Had a tech come do a diagnostic test. He said the mother board is fried.
    So I bought a mother board and installed it myself cause I’m a nut case lol.
    When I removed the old motherboard the motherboard was shorted out on the heat and failsafe area.
    Now the heater is working, but the pump one high speed still doesn’t work (the top side interface reads flo error)
    But the tub still heats and remains heated.
    Just thought I’d let you have a laugh!

That brown film is in the foam (bubbles) The tub is 2 months old and we did a bio clean using ahh some before using the tub. Haha! That's happened at my house too. You can use a pool net to scoop out the excess foam, and then give the filters a rinse and then hyper-chlorinate it with a double-dose of chlorine shock.
      I might at least try that before draining and refilling. Just check the levels before entering to make sure the chlorine is at a good level.

      Hi Brian
      2020 is a crazy year for almost everything. Between the shutdown closing factories for a while, and people working from home increasing the demand for products, things have gone a little crazy.
      That being said, for a quality inflatable hot tub, I do think $700-ish is a more realistic price than $400.
      The best one, by far, IMO, is this one from Intex - amzn.to/3mApqDh
      I'm going to order the top 3 sellers from Amazon in the next month and do a review video for each. So if you aren't in a hurry, keep an eye out for those.

    If alkalinity, ph, calcium and bromine levels are perfect, also water is only a month old, what could be the problem? I did use bright and clear once in my Hot Tub and since then, it is creates foam. Is bright and clear from leisure time bad product? Any suggestions on how to get rid of the foam(without emptying) other than using the temporary foam down product?

    Great videos Jeff; thank you. We have had our hot tub about three weeks now, your advice helped. But, is it normal to have to add water every week or so? 6 person tub, 330 gallons, and level has dropped about an inch a week. No obvious leaks and all else seems fine. Keep it covered except when in it which is daily by just the two of us.

    • @HotTubOwnerHQ
      @HotTubOwnerHQ  3 роки тому

      Hi Brian
      I don't add water more than once a month, at most. But I also keep mine at 98 so my toddler can enjoy it. The higher the temp the more you'll lose to evaporation.
      I would also remove the panels and check inside the hot tub for any signs of a leak too if you haven't done that.
      But if you don't see anything and keep yours set to 104, then it probably is just evaporation.
      I do have an article on my original website which dives deeper into this if you're interested - newmiddleclassdad.com/do-hot-tubs-lose-water/

      @@HotTubOwnerHQ Thanks Jeff. We also keep it at 98. They came today and removed all panels and checked. All looked great (as an engineer I was quite interested in seeing all the “innards”). If it is leaking it may be from the bottom. So, continue my monitoring and if it gets worse, go to next step with the company.
      Keep up the good and useful work!

Bromine levels are good and adding shock as recommended. by our local spa store. Any suggestions? Thanks for this channel. Very helpful.

    • @HotTubOwnerHQ
      @HotTubOwnerHQ  3 роки тому

      If the alkalinity levels are way low, you could be getting an inaccurate pH reading. So if it's way off, I would use baking soda to raise the alkalinity, and then check again. It will affect the pH too, but not nearly as much.
      Foam can also be caused by body oils, lotions, shampoo residue on the people soaking, so you could try having everyone rinse off in a shower first, for a week, and see if that effects it.

    Hey I have now had a hot tub for 2months and water chemicals are perfect and I check it frequently. My question is that when I turn on the jets I get giant layer of bubbles that look like foam ( it’s a big tub with a lot of jets) and when I turn off the jets in a minute or 2 everything dies down and turns back to clear water. Is this foam ??

    • @HotTubOwnerHQ
      @HotTubOwnerHQ  3 роки тому

      Hi Dawn
      So there's a few possible issues. If you keep the cover off a lot and it gets a lot of sun, you could have an algae problem. If the cover is always on when not in use though, that's probably not it.
      Foaming could be either high pH and/or low sanitizer, and could also just be from too many people soaking who wear a lot of body lotion/perfume/cologne.
      Also, you should be changing the water every 3 months and cleaning the filters weekly and replacing the filters every month or 2 (inflatable hot tubs use much more disposable filters that hard-shelled hot tubs).

    Hello, why did my water get cloudy? And how do I fix it.

    • @HotTubOwnerHQ
      @HotTubOwnerHQ  3 роки тому

      Hi Johnnie
      Cloudy water can be caused by a few things, most often high pH, low sanitizer, or a build-up of scum and/or bacteria in the plumbing.
      The pH and chlorine/bromine levels you can obviously test with a test strip and adjust. But using a non-chlorine shock also typically produces cloudier water than using chlorine shock.
      I do have an article which goes deeper into those issues and solutions - hottubownerhq.com/hot-tub-water-cloudy-and-smelly/
      If those are good and you've never done a biofilm cleanout, I would do that next when you change your water (which you should do every 3 months).
      I do this every time I change the water. That removes bacterial build-up inside the pipes.
      Here's a video on that in case it's helpful - ua-cam.com/video/8VxcrdIHtQo/v-deo.html

    Hi there! What’s your name again? Lol ! I just got my hot tub and I have a solid good time using it and learning the ins and outs. I let a friend use it and he dunked his head at least three times while we were using it. His hair is dirty and he was using my tub as a bathtub! Needless to say, I have good numbers today but FOAM! Do you know any trucks to reverse foam my filters have been cleaned once a week and I don’t have a sub pump yet. Like you said, look on Amazon but I don’t have time to do it with the holidays and my vacation coming up.
    Am I screwed and have to dump water? Any help please!

    • @HotTubOwnerHQ
      @HotTubOwnerHQ  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Craig, it's Jeff from Hot Tub Owner HQ (lol).
      Sorry for my delay in responding too. I get hundreds of comments and can't keep up. I would start by cleaning the filters at least with a kitchen sprayer, but maybe the deep chemical soak (watch this video if you haven't done one of those - ua-cam.com/video/6tEJGMEjavI/v-deo.html)
      Then I would hyper-chlorinate the water by doubling the amount of chlorine shock you normally would use (probably 1/2 cup should be right). Run the jets and leave the cover off at least 30 minutes.
      It may take a day or 2 before the chlorine levels drop to a safe soaking level, but it should help mitigate the foam.
      You can also use a net or skimmer-type device to literally scoop out the excess foam which will also help.
      I have that issue every time my teen daughters have friends over!
