- Famous Cities Then VS Now
The world has increased over the last 100 years that it's difficult to imagine just how much things have changed during that time.
Many of the world's most famous cities and country capitals bare little resemblance to their earlier selves.
Take a look at these before and after pictures of beautiful cities to see what I mean.

Hi
UAE 🇦🇪🇦🇪🇦🇪
Paris was even better 100 years before than now.
WWII did a number on many of Europe's most beautiful cities.
On the photo of Paris in 1900, what we see in the foreground are the pavilions of the Universal Exhibition. These are temporary constructions with metal frames and staff facings. On a photo from 1899 or 1901, they wouldn't be there either!
Population was better too.
I love the buildings in 1900 but now was replaced by trees😢
Ww1 kill paris
When it comes to Old Athena I literally expect to see Zeus standing there
Lol
I love Europeans. They maintain the beauty.
Only until recent times yes. Before it was chaos among themselves and onto other civilizations.
Because European nations had so much historic building that need to be preserved, so that's why they don't really have modern glass building
Maybe they remain fragmented as all other non-historical buildings will be replaced by tall skyscrapers or even more taller structures
Because cities end up crystallizing the period when countries modernized. In 100 years, Chinese cities will look a lot more like what they do today than what they looked 100 years ago.
By destroying and taking wealth of other nation by colonisation or other evil methods...Cute
It's insane how these Asian cities were barely there in the early 20th century and then became these massive futuristic metropolises in such a short (relative) timeframe. This is awesome, I had no idea just how much development happened just within the last few decades of the 20th Century alone.
I was absolutely gobsmacked at the change of pripyat.
I was in Singapore in 1994. Never realised how much it has changed since then.
I first came to Singapore in 1982. Astonishing how the place has changed over the years. Best wishes to all. Stay safe. Ted.
What I love about European cities is that they haven't changed that much thru out the years 🥳
Yes 💜
Sad that some European cities lost a lot of old buildings in WWII
Go to Vienna,it looks like it did 400 yrs ago.
Thanks to world wars, that kept young people away hence no population boom. 😎👍
European cities had their glory days 400 to 500 years ago
I can't tell you enough how much of a service you're providing with all your videos. The whole "Then vs Now" theme is both a delight and sad, over-whelming and poignant. There aren't enough comparative adjectives to describe the range of emotions that arise looking at your videos. Keep them coming.

I appear and dissappear 😂 hope you're well
For a change
I noticed, compared to earlier, the cities look more greener than before.
Especially, Paris, Seoul, Chicago and few more. The cities had baren land or some kind of road or mud but now they have gardens or long trees.
5:10 Why do I feel like Paris look better back in 1900 than now XD
Except that the buildings in the 1900 photo of Paris are "fake". These are the temporary pavilions of the Universal Exhibition, metal frames covered with staff facings. As quickly built as destroyed.
@@nicolas2419 Ah, that explains
@@alexg3744 yes lol I was so confused when I look at it first.
@@nicolas2419 unfortunate that they took them down afterwords. They could have easily been reinforced a relatively cheap price, and would have made the city much more beautiful. They don’t even have to be functional and they’d still be amazing
Wow, cities were once small towns, that were peaceful and quiet. Now it seems all of them are getting too crowded :( thank god I’m leaving the city.
I wish I could leave the earth
That's why they're cities dawg
We left a major metropolitan area back in 2019 (population a million) for a "small" city of 20K, surrounded by farms and other smaller cities/towns. It's still too big. Too crowded, too loud, crime is starting to go up...I can't wait to get out.
@@katie7748 ifcyou dont like cities why didn't you just move to the suburbs
Fascinating! I grew up in downtown Frankfurt Germany in the 60’s and remember when it was safe to be out on the streets all day and night’s too. Today never! It’s so sad to watch a beautiful city become a manure pile to put it politely. (At least the Bahnhofviertel where I grew up).
Conclusion: Not sure I can see all this as actual progress.
Having your country stolen from you is definitely not progress. The way it is being done is on-purpose and tantamount to genocide. But it is "politically incorrect" to point this out if your genetic heritage is European.

For me unbelievable thing is Paris view. It's reverse to the today's concrete jungle mentality. 😇😇😇😇
This is tartaria
Paris nowadays is a dump. Human turds and drug addicts and rats.It s Skid row.
@British Vlog I am an Indian and I agree with that
The 1900 view was from a worlds fair- temporary buildings
@@towaritch Paris has always been a dump, I invite you to read what Mozart had to say on the city of Paris (he explicitly said that Paris at the time was a shithole) or Victor Hugo, things don't change even centuries later, Paris was always seen as that crime ridden dump. Baron Hausmann in the late 1800s did a good job at renovating the city, but at the same time only put the problem away from the center, until the early to mid 1900s there was a big slum around Paris.
AMAZING pic of Singapore. Changed SO much in only 22 years!
You either love it or you hate it. My great grandparents grew up in Los Angeles in the 1920s. The neighborhood they lived in is now a cheap strip mall. And on the property their house once stood, hundreds of people live, stacked like sardines, in small overpriced ($500k) condos.
Ah yes, the famous city of Rysstad, Norway. On a serious note, I'm Norwegian myself and I think it's really pointless to include a rural area into vids like this, those areas will by default not change much anywhere in the world.
Ok ☺
Maybe that was exactly the reason to do so. 🤔
@@miguelmayer3473 Maybe, just didn't fit too much into a vid named famous cities in my opinion, but hey it's no big deal, vid wasn't bad.

Most of these cities didn't change all that much, except for the Arabian and Asian cities. The color photos just obscure the similarities. If you do grayscale on both time periods, you'll see the same city, with just taller buildings and more developed roads.

1:38 the picture taken in 1945 is after destruction by WW2. There were lots of buildings before the war.
But Tokyo was not affected by nuclear bombs at all. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were completely hit.
@@hexmaniac65 despite not being nuked, the city was shell bombed by the americans
@@diggasinparis No, Tokyo was not hit by bombs and nuclear bombs. Because after Japan's surrender from the war The United States had to pay for damages and rebuild the city. and enacted a law that prohibited Japan from having a military and Hiroshima is far from the capital. They changed the path of the river in Tokyo?
Sad to see NYC before the Twin Towers and then After they are gone.........
Yes 😔
In other parts of the world much many buildings went down during the wars, and NY only got fatter because of that. I don't say that the collapse of WTC was good, but just think of Europe and the rest of the world.
this is not twin towers this photo taken 1962 wtc completed in 1973

Actually Istanbul has not change so far, only modernise few buildings

Because photo just shows old town of istanbul where is constructing new buildings has prohibited
Sonya Jersey should do another video about the exact opposite. For example, some ghost towns that used to be some of the biggest and famous city’s back then. Like there is a town in southwestern Idaho called, “Idaho City” and back in the 1880s, Idaho city used to be bigger than Portland Oregon back then. Idaho city was the biggest city in western USA back then.
Small Norwegian towns in a video titled famous cities is a bit weird, but it was still a wow change in that first with big nature changes. That's a nice change.

Dang. Pripyat is just chilling.
Now, forecast 50 yrs. from now in photos. 2021 will look barren 👌
When first looking at the change in New York City, it may look small but if you look to the right of the image you will see the building in both shots, but in modern-day New York it looks small.
Watching this video and seeing the huge change over such a short period in some cases made me realise we have absolutely zero chance of halting or even reducing consuming all of our Planets resources. Sad but true...the human race won't want to go backwards only forwards...but into what?
We do have a chance if the correct leaders gain power. Hint: they are deemed the "greatest evil of all time" with no solid proof to back up the claim.
Freakin overpopulation destroying everything really.
@@pedrojuan8050 Not really. It is estimated the Earth can handle well over 10 billion people. We are at 7 billion now. It is not the sheer numbers of people that is the problem. It is the stupidity of humankind that is controlled by greed and self interest that is the problem. By not being able to take care of resources in an efficient and effective way, yes we are consigning ourselves to a sad, sad future.
I'd rather live in the 'then'. Nice video.
Now let's be fair. Beautiful coloring and expert photography and technology really pretties-up these cities. Black and white make the rivers look brown, which they may be. Color them blue and you have a good-looking city.
In some of the places...sea level remained same...example - last one...even with 100+ years time gap, sea level has not changed!!
That so cold photo of Singapore in 2000 isnt even close to being right. I've been going there since 1992. That photo is a lot older than 2000.
Amazing city in the world.
Low buildings view gives me feeling of peace for some reason
Vilnius, Lithuania really grew..... lovely city. The two towns in Norway look cozy and humble. The one in Germany didn't change very much. Athens was always beautiful. Paris looked big then, it's still a big city, but it doesn't look quite as exquisite.
