  • The Crypt at Hexham Abbey has an amazing history - it was built of Roman Stone by the Saxons as part of a church destroyed by the Danes, the Vikings. Rebuilt, attacked by the Scots, and then lost and then rediscovered in the 18th century!

Hexham Abbey with its crypt is located in the middle of Hexham, Northumberland about 22 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne and about 4 miles from Corbridge, very close to Hadrian’s Wall. Roman Corbridge was here.
This Crypt is really old, it is Saxon and was constructed in 674. Nearly 400 years before the Norman Conquest, when England was effectively made up of warrior states in what is often known as the Dark Ages
The original church and this crypt were constructed by Wilfrid and his fellow monks and it is likely they stored the relics they had collected around Europe in this Crypt. The church was dedicated to St Andrew and then was destroyed, burnt to the ground in 875 by the Danes or Vikings.
The Church remained in ruins for some time before being rebuilt as part of a monastery. The current church largely dates from c.1170-1250. During the 13th century however there were many Scottish raids and it is assumed or had been assumed that the crypt was lost during this time as there is no mention of it in 12th century records.
The church also survived another threat when Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries, however the church was kept
Their leaflet provides a good picture of the north passage roof slab, known as the Geta Stone. Geta was actually a Roman Emperor, who ruled jointly with his brother who murdered him but then tried to remove all references to Geta as we can see on this stone, his name has been roughly chipped away.

What were Saxons doing building a church in the Angle Kingdom of Northumbria?
I think someone has got their history mixed up.

I take your point, however Hexham Abbey describe it as a Saxon crypt so I followed that convention.
