It’s amazing that the flail system developed 80 years ago is still being used to clear mine fields. Thank you for posting this entertaining and informative video. I really enjoyed watching it.
It works. You can be pretty sure there's no larger object left in where the flail has been... Plows etc. - a mine might get lucky and simply get tipped over. Rollers are heavily dependent on configuration. Some models have gaps in which they may get tilt-rod mines but not pressure-activated ones.
Due to the war unleashed by Russia, Ukraine is now the most mined country in the world. And this is right in Europe. It will take up to 30 years for the complete demining of the territories of Ukraine. We need more demining machines like this
I'm a Marine, and in 1965 my mine clearance vehicle was an LVT-E1 that carried two 350 foot C-4 charges that were pulled out with sidewinder rockets. I wish someone had video of my version of the first mine clearance vehicle!
2000lbs of C4 pulled out by a sidewinder missle and command detonated. Used to give classes on these monsters to the grunts at Lejeune in 81. Everybody needs one!!
I hope that these tank clearing vehicles are being used world wide to clear mine fields in old war zones. That way, the civilians can get on with their lives. If someone made a career of driving and maintaining these mine clearing vehicles to remove left over mines from old wars in peace time, it would be a career that anyone could be proud of.
The mine flail "the Crab" was developed and first used by the British during World War II. They had a group who developed specialised tanks, known as "Hobart's Funnies", after Major-General Percy Hobart who was responsible for their development. There was also a mine clearing plough called the "Bullshorn Plough" together with a bridge layer and AVRE assault tank that mounter a petard mortar instead of a gun. Both Churchill and Sherman tanks were modified for these purposes.
Loved the comment on the first one - the Keller - it has a 98% success rate in destroying mines! so at a guess it has a 2% success rate at destroying you!
Yeah, 2% remaining sounds nasty. However, I read, that there is a risk that Keiler just throws away the mine and such it doesn't count destroyed. I assume the thrown away mines count within the 2%. Also for the 'worst case', the Keiler bases a extra old tank design that had no welds in the floor, as these are potential weak points. I guess the true likely worst case would be, if a hand full of hoistile troops with ATGMs have watch over the mine barrier.
@@andreasr3828 Well it's for combat clearing, so taking out 98% of the chances on an uncharted field in Eastern or Southern Ukraine is still much better than not having one in front of you. All you need is a penetration axis and break out after that...

I like the Prohon 1. If I was going to design a mine clearing vehicle it would be similar to the Prohon 1 but with some improvements and additional capabilities.
Reminds me of the old story of when an American advisor was sent to Afghanistan in the '80s and saw the tribal chief coming towards him on the road with a woman walking about 50 meters in front of the chief, seemingly leading the way. The American was surprised, as he thought women were 2nd class persons in this part of the world and would be made to follow subserviently behind the men. He asked the chief why the custom seemed to contradict tradition, and the chief simply replied: "mines".
And what do you think about demining vehicle to clear minefields with smart mines like M93 HORNET. Everything in range 100 meters would be destroyed. What is the best vehicle for that?
Problem with flails is they dig out ground ahead, and when the vehicle reaches the dug out ground it dips the flail to dig even deeper then the vehicle encounters the raised parts of the earth and digs shallow its all about a control system that keeps the flail depth at optimum regardless ofvehicle angle
SLOW AND EXPENSIVE It must be possible to make small and light robots that go out and detect the mines maybe as hovercraft Build from glassfiber and with a small metal detector many would be destroied, but they would be cheap
