  • Have you ever been faced with the situation of having one (or multiple like me) Super VHS VCR's but no S-VHS tapes to record with? Well with this quick, easy, and very cheap modification you can have all of the S-VHS tapes you want. Bear in mind, S-VHS tapes have a different videotape formulation (often much more refined) than VHS tapes, so while this modification works, the S-VHS footage recorded on standard VHS tapes will degrade prematurely (2 to 5 year lifetime instead of 20+ years if a proper S-VHS tape is used) so if you're not planning on archiving S-VHS footage, but you want to experiment with the system without emptying your wallet on new old stock Super VHS cassettes, than this modification is for you.

    Nice! But can you demonstrate the quality of a tape recorded that way?

    Or get a Super VHS-ET VCR. You get the same effect without having to drill a hole in the standard VHS cassette.

      I have a Mitsubishi SVHS VCR with the ET feature and it works great. It even has a tape calibration tool so that it will record the best possible picture the tape can handle.

    But what is the video quality like?

  • @mrmagnetoscope
    @mrmagnetoscope 6 років тому +6

    I tried, and it does not work. The VCR thinks it's a S-VHS tape, but when I play the recording, it shows no picture. You indeed need a S-VHS ET.

    Useful.
    3:14 I had a same tip as this but with a natural desolder. (without at Electric use.)
    Anyway that's will be have at Full Function (VHS converted) as S-VHS (210% Luminance) because that's doesn't depend at Additional function as "S-VHS ET" (190% Luminance)

    One concern I have is when the hole is made, some of the loose plastics drilled out may have fallen into the cartridge.

    Make sure you use high quality VHS tapes, Using low quality ones gives bad recordings since the VCR is optimized for better quality magnetic properities, If you must use normal VHS tapes use VHS-ET feature if equiped, It optimizes the recording quality based on the quality of the tape to get better results than using S-VHS setting.

    Be careful not to drill the hole near the running tape hubs.

    You have poor VCR, so buy better one with S-VHS ET function. LOL

    What about VHS-C ? is it possible to modify VHS-C to SVHS-C ?

    • @stonent
      @stonent 4 роки тому +1

      Same way, just look for the hole on the SVHS-C tape and drill it.

    How about quality in comparison to original S-VHS tape? Did you test it?

    Guarda che non è solo una questione fisica esterna della videocassetta,la videocassetta SVHS e una metal,ed è fatta apposta per lavorare ad una frequenza del segnale video più alta del VHS.il VHS esiste solo normal e chrome.

    What would happen if one did this to a prerecorded commercial vhs tape and then played it back in an S-VHS machine?

    • @stonent
      @stonent 4 роки тому +1

      It may not work. S-VHS records brightness and color on separate channels. VHS records them on the same channel. SVHS can play and record VHS without modification, but if you drill the tape it will try to play it oncorrectly.

    If I modify VHS tape so VCR thinks it's a super VHS, will a regular VHS recording show any improvement when played in super VHS mode? My machine will only output the S-Video when using a super VHS tape. So was thinking about modifying cassette to get S-Video output function on regular VHS recording to see if it's improved over using composite (RCA).

    • @Capturing-Memories
      @Capturing-Memories 3 роки тому

      No, VHS is played back as VHS and S-VHS is played back as S-VHS. The only improvement you get from playing back a normal VHS tape in a S-VHS deck is the S-Video output, It's much better than yellow composite out even for regular VHS.

    • @JD_1978
      @JD_1978 3 роки тому

      @@Capturing-Memories Thanks for your response. My machine will only output S-Video when utilizing a super VHS tape. I modified a vhs-c adapter and even though the machine recognized it as a super VHS tape, S-Video output would only appear as black and white.

    • @Capturing-Memories
      @Capturing-Memories 3 роки тому

      @@JD_1978 That's what I just said, VHS is played as VHS, If you put a hole in it, it will be played as S-VHS and the signal will be wrong, because the VCR doesn't care what signal is on the tape.

      Because in 10 years you can still play it. In 20 years you can still play it. In 30 years you can still play it. etc. I have already lost more recordings than I care to remember that bit-rotted and faded on recordable DVD's, CD's, Flash Drives, most of which didn't even last 5 years. Future generations may never even know who we were because we stored information so volatile.

    Ummm a DVR makes Better Recording of Video and So Did a DVD Recorder Which is What Killed the VCR's....Now if you were Recording Audio From Long Play Records or CD's to Tape then that's Best Way to Go Next to Obtaining a Reel to Reel due to WiderTape and Bigger Record Heads in the Player...

      I was like 14 or 15 when I made this video. It was made years before it was uploaded. This, and the camera I was using had a terrible microphone. And just an FYI, I prefer CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM instead of the ignorant insults. Thanks!
