Thank you Jasper, just spent the last few hours listening to Jake Thackray music on You tube, a fellow Tyke i had not heard of, mind the 80s were spent supping Whitbreads and listening to Fred Wedlock
I used to listen to an LP that belonged to my parents called carrot in notts. Its this plus his wembly broad side, havanagila and basidy chelt. Brillience. yup and tupped them all again.
Jasper what can I say. Your such a FUNNY SOD!!! I loved watching him all those years ago in the 70's & he's NOT LOST IT after all these years ( calmed well down since been on Golden Balls which is a load of rubbish anyway) But, at his age he has to aswell as been on daytime TV. THANK GOODNESS FOR UA-cam! 😂😁😁😁😂👍👍👍👍👍.
Thackeray is truly a genius, but by the same token this is also fabulous. I like Carrott and on Carrott in Notts he certainly bigs up JT before this rendition. It's clear he held him in great esteem Carrott always claimed that he didn't enjoy perfoming all that much. Just think what he'd have been like if he had!
This song must be from a much older tradition - the other day a local radio station in Houston played a track (apparently from a very hard to get discontinued comedy album called "Down home humor") spoken by a Bob Murphy. I found the words on the web - and there is quite a similarity... (search for The-Legacy-of-Raunchous-Red- ) I presume this predates Jake Thackray's version but they must have a common folk tale origin.
Jake Thakary is the better musician and songwriter. Jasper Carrot is the better comedian. Arguments about which is better are really quite silly. Jake plays better guitar, but Jasper's arrangement brings out the humor better. And it's still Jake's song.
With all due respect to Jake Thackray, I have to say Jasper Carrot's version is better because the criteria of how to make a judgment with a song like this, is the comical effect. A bit like how some jokes are funnier than others by the way you tell them.
I don’t think this version is bad. It’s treating the song as a complete joke as opposed to Thackray’s elegant, humorous, poetic chanson. I enjoyed watching this as a “what if Thackray was just a musical comedian” alternative universe but I do wish to go and listen to the original , superior now. No hate to this carrot dude tho.
John Hyland that’s where I disagree John, we shouldn’t be judging on comic effect. If so then yes Carrot sure. But no. Thackray wrote chansons. Some of which happened to be funny but they were first and foremost beautiful, often rural, exquisitely constructed chansons. The delivery by carrot really breaks the rhythm for me. What I love about Thackray’s delivery is it’s very matter of fact, the humorous bits (if any in the chanson) come out of nowhere, and it’s whole-heartedly sincere (not to mention his unique guitar playing). He was ever so charming, likeable, and talented beyond belief. I’d really recommend checking out his work as a whole.
It's probably unfair to compare the two - and Carrot does well enough to be sure. But for myself I prefer Jake's version: wry, tender, humane, angry, self-deprecating. Jasper Carrot is a funny man, but Jake Thackray was a poet.
Quite a few comics started off in folk clubs. Jasper Carrott and Billy Connolly to name just two
Love this song. As much as I love Jake Thackray, Carrot does bring this song to the masses, and does it well. RIP Jake.
I think it’s in the facial expression/movement… as well as inflection etc
I wonder if jake got to see jaspers performance
Carrot introduced me to Thackray. For many years only one of the two has been a mainstay of my listening. Not that Jasper will mind.

Forgot about this song for so long! Remember hearing it on one of my Dads albums. Absolutely brilliant.

I love this song. It's on the Carrott In Notts LP that also includes Bastity Chelt and Hava Nagila. A classic album. One of his best I would say.
Excellent, always loved this song.
Such a funny man, he can make me laugh anytime. Love him xx
Omg, I'd forgotten how hysterical this is.

"and as I was locking up my budgerigar
he jumped my parrot from behind
who was sitting on my shoulder at the time"
hilarious
Hahaha! I've never heard this one from Jasper. Brilliant 8-))...

Carrott always claimed that he didn't enjoy perfoming all that much. Just think what he'd have been like if he had!
Heard him do this on Carrott in Notts, best version that appears to be unattainable x
+Steven Prestidge Me too!
And remember - 'What's 'e TEEM???'?
I've got that album as well.
I have that album as well. Who could forget The Bantam Cock. Absolute genius.
Thanks for posting this, I haven't seen it in years. Excellent! :->
love him. shame I can't see him anywhere in Poland
Very funny ,I've always liked British comedy.......
I always loved Jasper Carrot. 😆. I loved his story about being in Hong Kong.... 😆
Wikki wikki
Anotherr Jake Thackray fan. Good performance.
3:00 He gave me a wink and a terrible grin, the way that rapists do. 😆🤣😆
100% brilliant
Anyone who has kept Bantams knows this is not too far from the truth.
He's actually a great guitarist.
I first heard this on an album called Carrot in Notts, great delivery. Jasper is a skilfull exponant of his art
Jumped me parrot from behind ...who was sittin on me shoulder at the time lol genoius
Now you've got UA-cam you can simply watch Jake Thackray
Grown up with love the mole sketch!lol.
Jasper at his best.
This is definitely not a song I would have expected jasper Carrot to cover.

Hahahahaha!
"And while I was locking up me budgerigar,
He jumped me parrot from behind
Who was sitting on me shoulder at the time!!!"
I'm probably the youngest fan of his here lol, gotta love this and his stepmother sketch xD
Good old gaspa carrot. 😅😊😊
I do tent to change the line to "As perverts do...". Not sure even that's ok anymore.
Have a look on youtube for Jake's stuff - he died just a few years ago I think, oh but he was so funny - what a character !!
This song was written by Jake Thackray.
He gives that indication at 0:19.
Carrot makes this song come to life, I watched the Jake Thackary version, because I prefer origionsls, but Jasper really did make this his own.
It’s the body language that makes it so funny!
Killed it :(
I literally had no idea Jasper Carrot played guitar.
OK I kinda like Jasper Carrot again now after that horrible sitcom he did. His Jake impression is pretty good!
And Jasper makes the funniest face if you pause it at 1.40 :D
2020. Here for laughs.
that is blo*dy brilliant hahaha
I laughed out loud...
listen to jake thackrey, who wrote it!!! but this is a great version too.
I personally prefer this performance.
Still do.
carrots cool, dont diss the man.
carrot in notts has the best version
AHHAHAHAhahaha truly funny!
Brummies are the best
Mother in law I mean *headsmacks*
Just for a laught, I watched this video
I have to say, this is better than the original, but it is also better than the crap we have been spoon fed from The X-Factor!
I myself never Considered Jake Thakaray to be a Singer, but, to be fair to him, he got away with it!
This guy looks like he could be an older brother of poker author Puggy Neutron.
fantastic! the way tht rapists do! lmao! carrott is a comic genius!
i thought you may like this one
The Corries did it just as well.
piss funny :P
@gokory its about a randy male chicken

Haha 3.00 - 3.08.
Jake Thackray is a genius. Carrot is not.
"Little black BLINKING eye" not laughing eye...
I've just been looking & Listening to Jake Thakaray, I have to admit, Jasper Carrot can sing a lot better than Jake!
This rambling version is an insult to Jake Thackray but goes a long way to explain what made Jake Thackray so special.
true, agree.

Sorry, No. but I know a joke about a donkey.
PISH!
An absolutely GHASTLY parody of Thackray. Carrott should be ashamed (and tupped repeatedly).
