That's why old matches tend to have longer duration despite the players only need 15 points to win a set/game. 2. Equipments. Old rackets are made of steel that's definitely heavier than nowadays carbon rackets. This of course affect the way the players play the game. I think the shuttlecocks are also different in some ways that also affects the way they play. Not to mention the shirt, shorts, shoes. Those things also have impacts on how the players play. 3. Overall human evolution. Do you know how much the world has changed in the last half century? From the technological advancements, food, nutrition, etc that definitely have impacts on athletes.

Though I had never heard of Punch Gunalan until now, I used to be a die hard fan of Hartono then in 1978-79. I also admired his skipping prowess. 1979 was possibly the year Prakash Padukone became the all England champion defeating another Indonesian great Liem Swie King. Possibly Susi Susanti was the last great Indonesian badminton champion. None can ever match her grace and power. She is way above the Chinese lot. Come to think of it, Malaysia too had the great sidek brothers apart from Gunalan. Gunalan is possibly of Indian origin.
Now Gunalan sir is no more. Om Shanthi. He was a good single player too. I like his smashing styles .Gunalan and Ng Boon Bee are famous doubles Malaysian Badminton Players. Bapak Rudi Hartano is a Super Star of Badminton and world Badminton Legend although he comes from Indonesia.

ganti shutle kock ngambil sendiri...kemudian tahun selanjutnya ada petugas yang handle...tapi kalau ganti kocknya, kocknya di lempar (baik oleh pemain atapun petugas), sekarang kalau ganti kock, diserahin ama pemainnya ke petugas dan petugasnya mengganti dengan meletakkannya di raket pemain. perubahan yang sangat unik... tapi apapun...badminton tetep menarik (bagi yang hobby...hehehe)

The late Punch Gunalan was a member of Malaysia's 1969/1970 Thomas Cup team that was defeated and dethroned 7-2 by Indonesia in the 1970 Thomas Cup final at the Stadium Negara.
In fact,Punch Gunalan and Rudy Hartono were involved in a three set thriller in the 1970 Thomas Cup final with the former almost closed to winning in straight sets.Gunalan had won the first set 15-12 but then in an all out smashing game with Hartono he was pipped at deuce when it was 16-16 with Hartono winning 17-16.The deciding set was all in Hartono's favour winning 15-6.
In the 1974 All England final again Gunalan bowed out fighting losing in three sets.Hartono's 1974 All England triumph was his seventh and it equalled the record of seventh wins held by Erland Kops of Denmark.
But it was in the 1974 All England that Hartono unlike his previous six All England triumphs had to struggle all the way to the final.He was involved in three sets with Elo Hansen and then was nearly on the edge of defeat against Sweden's Sture Johanssen in a three set thriller.

Though I had never heard of Punch Gunalan until now, I used to be a die hard fan of Hartono then in 1978-79. I also admired his skipping prowess. 1979 was possibly the year Prakash Padukone became the all England champion defeating another Indonesian great Liem Swie King. Possibly Susi Susanti was the last great Indonesian badminton champion. None can ever match her grace and power. She is way above the Chinese lot.
Come to think of it, Malaysia too had the great sidek brothers apart from Gunalan. Gunalan is possibly of Indian origin.
Now Gunalan sir is no more. Om Shanthi. He was a good single player too. I like his smashing styles .Gunalan and Ng Boon Bee are famous doubles Malaysian Badminton Players. Bapak Rudi Hartano is a Super Star of Badminton and world Badminton Legend although he comes from Indonesia.
