I had a pair of Maggie 1.7i speakers in my very moderately sized room, but to my absolute dismay, they were a bit to large for the room, so I had to downsize. But, when I did have the 1.7i's in my room, I felt that they could use a good sub to augment to bottom end. I decided that the smaller Maggie .7 speakers would be the perfect match for my room. I auditioned the .7's with a pair of new REL T7X subs and was absolutely floored by the full range sound that the Maggie/REL combo produced. The sound was mesmerizing!!! The subs were dialed in to the Maggies to perfection. We were all completely captivated by the sound of this system. I had the same reaction to a Maggie 3.7i/REL set-up that I heard in this same showroom about a year ago. This was it!!! I ordered the Maggie .7's and a pair of the REL subs.
I originally purchased these speakers at LivingSound in Wichita, KS. They are out of this world in the way they reproduce lifelike sound across the entire range of music. I listened to several types of high end speakers, including B&W & MartinLogan, but I kept coming back to the Magneplanar 1.7.
They are certainly the best I have ever owned, and I am very particular about my sound. The price, though, is not out of this world. In my opinion, they sound better than much more expensive speakers. I never thought I would be able to afford incredible sound like this on a working man’s budget, but that is exactly what Magnepan has done.
Do yourself a favor and try out the Magneplanar speakers. You won’t be sorry. And when it comes time for me to upgrade, I’ll be shopping at Magnepan!
I think these Magnepans are the best sounding of the many I have heard. Lifelike :)
I have been smitten by Maggies ever since I was a kid (SMGa) and I have owned 3.6s and now MMGs. Soon to get a hybrid Black Ice audio amplifier to go with my Chord dac. MAGNEPAN FOREVER!!
The best volume to play/record music is about 75db. When you get up around 80db, the Auto-Level Control in the camera starts to kick in and compress the sound. Still your system sounds very good, incredibly lifelike.
I like it. I have been watching Magnepan videos, I am itching to hear them in person. Audio Research is awesome. All you need now is a turntable and a phono stage and you are set.
Excellent setup. Certainly the word “investment” is incorrectly used but I understand your sentiment. Enjoy the system!
Thanks for doing this, I'm ordering this CD today, right now on discogs. There is nothing that images like a Magnepan or sounds like one, I had the Magnepan 1.6 and do miss them. I have vandersteens now and love them. I have the stereo version of your two mono amp the 450s. That Ref 5 is nice and I have been looking for a reasonably priced ref 5se. The bass was nice and tight, very punchy.
Hey Sid, just wondering why you stayed with Vandersteen over the Maggie's, I'm considering Vandersteens over Magnapans and would like you opinion. Thanks
sid vicious I have vandersteen 2ce will these be an update. Can the 1.7s be run by rotel 130 watt a,p
@@j.c.cooper9591 I went through two iterations the 2ce signature with two 2wq subs and I ended with the Quatros with. Hilt in subs. More bass was what I craved and Vandersteen when set up right can have that 3D like sound. I’m making another change with speakers and subs to be determined. I’m sorry it took me so. Dry long to get back to you.
@@Isingdabodyelectric You can run Maggie’s with that amp, it be very careful to check out the dampening factor or it’s ability to control the drivers if available. Not all 120-130 watt amps are created equally and Maggie’s. An bring amps to their knees. Vandersteen s are more forgiving. I’m sorry it took this long for me to get back to you.
Thanks! Great Tone! How did you connect the DVM to your system? Did you use high pass or?
Lucky you! You got space and that’s what these Maggie’s need.
I ordered them and my previous speakers were the .7, magnificent model for smaller rooms.
My first impression is that they perform a better bass compared to .7 but the mids and highs are kind of shy still. Is that normal? I started yesterday the burning in process.
Also I noticed that the back of this dipole speaker doesn’t almost vibrate like the front side of the vertical ribbons.
Love your set up
Very nice set up. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
why don't you put the camera on a good stand at the listening position to get a nice steady view, and a close up from your components and cables, speakers to get a good idea from your music room ? you got a beautiful set up..how does the 1.7i react on the sidewalls ,how far does it need to be from the sidewalls at least? and how did you connect the basspanel to the amps? again great set !
Nice presentation video
I was wondering, do your magnepan has a slight ribbon vibration on the back of your speakers? I own the 1.7i and there is almost none vibration on the back panel, thought they are dipole that’s why say that.
I owned the .7 before and the panel ribbons were vibrating equally from the front say and back side.
The magneplanars really need a flat wall to reflect off of , ad some diffusion helps with the sound. Firing the rear wave into a cavity is a recipe for aberrant reflections.
Agree, diffusion did awesome things for the imaging of my pair of 1.7i.
Wo- did you just call your 50k audio system, “modest”?
Have you considered the Magna Riser Ascension Stands with replacement jumpers?
I had these also. My only issue not really an issue is why the connections are so tiny! I would prefer to run a slightly thicker speaker wire to them but they are so petite in size and space because they do require a decent amount of power to sound like they should. They still sound great. I’m sure Magnepan knows what they are doing but I would still prefer a more heavy duty connection on the speaker itself. I attached a Rel subwoofer when I had them. They are so accurate they needed accurate bass to keep up with them.
you can move massive power, over a kilowatt, perfectly with good copper 12 AWG cable. there's no improvement with larger gauge speaker cable.
herr trigger your assuming things.
Just add a 120" drop down screen with a 4k sony projector and you will have a mean viewing setup. Its hard to tell through my computer but it sounds like you have matched the amplifiers to perfection with these magnepans
Oddly, a home theater system is a lot of buzz, bluster, and poor quality sound. If you manage to clean the sound up , it doesn't match the screen. Clean sound takes away from the film, at least it does for me. The beatles on a good stereo sounds like teenagers with pimples. If that is what it is, so be it. Almost all music sounds better on a good system. I've also noticed that different notes sound true to frequency, and that is why , even simple music, is a lot more enjoyable. Most sound systems are compressed, with all notes closer together. It is also impossible to tell the difference between a base fiddle and a drum. Sounds become jumbled together because they are. Or, to put it another way, All the sounds of music mixed together and replayed are only one frequency at the time. The system has to "unscramble" the mix to allow two sounds at the same time. Very few systems can unscramble a whole orchestra at the time, with all the tones and harmonics in tact. The difference in a good stereo and a lesser one is the same difference as watching a football game on TV and sitting in the stadium with a good seat. Most people have never heard a quality stereo, and my guess is that is why they like home theater. Mostly, the stores that sell "HI FI" have mismatched systems that they have to sell to make a living.
Right on, Marshall...I love my Maggie HT
Great video! I have the 1.7i speakers as well and have pondered purchasing the DVM panels, however I feel a real subwoofer might be better for rounding out the sound. Do you have any regrets getting them?
Do you still use the 1.7 and prefer it to top box speakers? Also have you seen people who output the high and mids to the Maggie’s and all bass to a sub array? MikeOCD on UA-cam demonstrated this and the highs and mids are clearer and the bass tighter. Also I hear magnepan mini have been prototyped and demoed with great reviews.. suppposed to be out in 6-12 mos and cost 20k
Hi. Excellent setup you got there. Let me ask you how did you connect the bass panel? Is it a parallel connection or does the panel crossover send only the midrange/high frequencies to the 1.7i's?
My set up is similar somewhat. I have a REF75 , a pair of 3.5R's, a REL sub (for ultralow freq) and just got one DWM which arrives next week. I will try both parallel and crossovered DWM/3.5R options, but I wonder which option you use?
Each mono amp needs to be plugged directly into it's own dedicated socket, it appears that tiny power cord on the left side is feeding the whole system? If so those amps are being starved, they will get the current they need much easier direct from the wall. All power filters choke some of the current compared to straight juice. Some big Krells won't even power up using a filter / surge protector
Those amps and system are on a dedicated circuit. Thanks for watching
@@tdrizzy41 I really like it, your rig is awesome. The 1.7i are a great fit for this room.
Are they accurate and dynamic sounding?
Thank you for the video which was nicely done. Did you eventually move to the 3.7i's or higher and if so was it worth it? Oh, one more thing, how critical are they for sitting dead centre? Thanks Rodney.
Seems like there needs to be a center speaker.
Two DVMs might have balanced the bass a touch better. Great detail and impact
Edgar Misplaced I have two dvm's I just upgraded to 3.7i so stay tune for my review
Edgar Misplaced I have two DVM's
Would love to hear how the 3.7i are working for you verses the 1.7i. I am in the market for new speakers. I can't afford the 3.7i now but would like to get them later. Thinking about getting the 0.7 now and the 3.7i later vs 1.7i now. What do you think would be better for now. Get the 0.7 and one DVM or just get the 1.7i alone?
Do you think the DWM's made a difference? Was one enough or did you need two?
so is this where you go to get away from the wife and kids?
Can you play dead can dance song of stars chamberlin michel farrel sade
What is a streamer? Where does it stream music from? It sounds compressed! Play something with dynamic range!
Over the internet?
You MUST be joking!
A streamer captures a digital source from the internet and the quality is the same if not better than most redbook CDs. When they first came out they were so-so but now they are really good due to big improvements in USB hardware and way better DACs
Cool beans. I juts got some of these speakers. WOW. I do disagree about needing the bass panels in my small room but how do you have the bass panels connected? Thru a crossover or just to a full range speaker output?
Del Smith I have the 1.7i with parasound Halo. I also added a 12" Klipsch ported sub
if the bass panel does not have built in crossover, you are gonna need a crossover, the heavier weight of the diaphragm does not lend itself well to full range.
So you need sub woofers for these things?
Pelt Down Posse omg
No
In my Sennheiser hd600 these sound good but a lot like my Klipsch 280f, honestly. I think the piano sounds better than my Klipsch, the bass sounds about the same as my Klipsch but just over UA-cam it sounds the bass is slightly less controlled, or more standing bass waves than my Klipsch.
Mental, so somehow I am meant to judge how this system sounds while listen to this video on my computer speakers. I do like the look of your system though.
Sounds just like my iPad.
Will 130 watt rotel amp drive these
I SING THE BODY ELECTRIC yes, very nicely
Ohms are more important
wow, your $50k of components sounds exactly like my laptop! and that was only like $1,100. there is literally no point to this video (or channel) this is a person who has nothing to say (but doesn't know it).
get a tape measure and measure from side wall back walls and where you sit....and then tweek from there.....i say this because the way your speakers are set up they are uneven and the sound cannot be that great
Pessoma acustica, stanza troppo riverberante
I'm not impressed, it seems like the sound is hiding behind
your speakers.
Do you even know ANYTHING about Maggie's? I doubt it
Lol. Review? All you did was play a song.
Where's the bass? I don't hear a door or window one rattling. Pictures not even bouncing off the wall. What's going on here? All that money on gear and zero bass response.
Even the next door kid, with a lot of effort cant knock pictures off the wall with his drums. This sounds very good to me. Some people get used to muddy base and think it is great. It isn't. My system has magnepan 1.6's, pulled by a couple of Conrad Johnson 11a's. I love it. With the right room treatment, it sounds very close to live... which is the objective. Music is more musical. This system does the piano well, which is hard to do.
His dentist recommended against it.
@@tomdobyns2062 I been enjoying my Maggie 1.6's since 2005.I I recommend the Myesound stands. They will deepen the bass and tighten sound staging focus. I'm biamping with a Conrad Johnson mv55 for treble and midrange and Adcom 555 mk2 on low midrange and bass. Spectacular!! Extended bass is from two Vandersteen 2w's as they are of the very few subs that are fast enough to keep up with just about all speakers. The Premiere 11a is beauteous and sounds gorgeous. Conrad johnson hasn't been able to top themselves since. Enjoy those beauties my man!! My mv55, though not quite as pretty, or as powerful is a looker and sounds somewhat sweeter to me because it uses EL34's. Happy listening my friend!
Not very natural sounding. I got it, you are missing tube gear. Thought I recognized that dry shrill sound. Good ol' solid state.
jim davidson learn your components that is tube moron!
Amps are solid state Jerry. Only tubes are in the preamp. Learn yours first before commenting Jerry.
@@jimdavidson5208 Output tubes with Maggies?...pull the other one!
And you can tell this over your logitech computer speakers ?? hahahahaha
