Only Hamish and Andy could take something as mundane as seeing how far your car can drive on an empty tank, and make it such an unbelievably funny and entertaining video
This is like the Seinfeld episode where Kramer takes a car for a test drive and him and the salesman get so excited trying to go as long as they can on no fuel.
but i mean its pretty bad an misleading, this is a diesel engine and there are alot of factors, if you think driving your car on anything below quarter is good for it youre gonna have a bad time
Think we don't appreciate how ridiculous 100kms is. That's past Wollongong if you're in Sydney, that's practically getting to Ballarat if you're in Mebourne and GC to Brissy.
@@vincenzopanetti294 Most of your cities are like packed with more people than our other major cities. Just putting it in some context on how far 70 miles is.
This video saved us today, we were running empty with 30km to go until a petrol station But then remembered golden era Hamish and Andy did 100km on operation dry tank! Hahaha
I tried the same thing in my car a few years ago. Ended up somewhere between Wagga and Canberra in the dark with a pretty annoyed wifey in the passenger seat. On the plus side, I now know how to siphon fuel and what that fuel tastes like too.
Part of the reason for the extra buffer is it's really bad for the fuel pump to run the tank empty. The fuel acts to remove heat from the immersed pump, so you generally don't want to run the car under 1/4 tank, let alone to bone dry. Car companies probably know people wait until the gas light comes on, so have built in a buffer.
Wonder if its just a safety net. Like imagine your in the middle of nowhere with no gas stations in sight and your meter hits zero, now you've got 100km until you are truly screwed.
It's not a safety net, it's a design safety thing. This is a diesel injected car, and running it dry will absolutely fuck the inner workings of the engine. I'm pretty sure Hamish later said they ended up having to sell this as a result. You can run past empty for say 20-30km to get fuel, but anything past that and you're actively destroying the car.
The knowledge this video gave me jus what I needed to push through and not get stranded in the outback ahah!! I knew we could make it to the next fuel station even after we hit empty and there was still 20ks to go! And we did!! Thank God. I wasn't ready to be wolf creeked in the outback!
Keep in mind driving with low fuel is bad for the pump since it's cooled by the fuel. And you can't count on any specific empty range since driving conditions and weather have a big impact. City driving you might be lucky to go half that distance.
+1 for this. He could have given it one good squirt of throttle to accelerate or pass another vehicle and instantly lost power for example. Cruising like they did is as efficient as it gets.
most cars have a reserve of 2 to 3 gallons after it hit's "empty". The car gets average 27mpg and they went 111km, 68 miles. Car has roughly 2.5 gallons reserve after the gauge hits emtpy
This is the best thing ever!! So true like finding out about the matrix 😂 makes me want to test my own car! All the lies we’ve been fed! Thanks Hamish and Andy! You guys are legends!!!
35 was the most I’d ever been game enough to try. I had run out of fuel twice tho in a different car, both times were meters away from the bowser luckily
I'm assuming people already know this but just in case: Every car is different but the general rule is the steadier you drive the less fuel you consume. 111Ks is indeed a pretty insane number
I feel the reason why car manufacturers are telling you that your car is almost is gonna go on empty is becuase they dont want you to runnout of petrol and start pumping air into the cylinders at all csuse the bearings can be damged, so its a saftey feature to save your car from getting replacements. On reasurance if you run out of petrol cause your car says it does, just know you still have at least 1 to 2 gallons left depending on what car you have so that you have time to refuel up your car with petrol. So you can drive up to another 50 to a 100 miles
So I know this might be hard to believe, but I did a equation to figure out exactly what it would look like to leave a string representing how much fuel you use behind you as you drove forward. In my car that gets 30 miles to the gallon, that means whenever I drive I'll be leaving a string of fuel behind me the thickness of one normal head hair.
Have they never noticed that when they stop with 0km left per the computer that when they fill, they end up putting in 2 or 3 gallons (litres or whatever) less than the capacity of the fuel tank in the owner's manual? I think this is the way the manufacturer kind of builds in a virtual "reserve tank", like on a motorcycle. It keeps dolts from running out of gas on the freeway.
*haha you characters!! this is the first piece of content I've seen from you in about 6 years and you guys are still AWESOME!!! Expect brand endorsements from car companies now :-D*
I seriously believe that there should be a sign erected at that point on the freeway. You know, like "Hamish and Andy made it this far"... we could crowd fund it. A flashing neon sign!...But part of me wishes they made it to Sydney.
That gives me hope for work tomorrow my work cars on empty and I've got to travel 25 ks... might just take me skateboard Fleetwood Mac album and some raspberrie juice just in case..
@Hamish & Andy try this. Full the tank. Reset computer (also consumption). Drive in city to empty (not empty but 0km/mile) and then drive in city to dry it. It´ll be maybe 30km or 40km with SQ5. :) You will get proper data and more accurate test. :) Have nice day
Coming home from a holiday last year driving a mazda cx 7, we were racing to get to a petrol station. But it stopped literally as soon as it told us 0kms left 😂😂
That was actually hilarious. I think the best thing is that they were really expecting like 10ks. Also even though I'm Australian it looks so weird to see the driver on the right side because I watch too much American TV.

TheAngryOutlaw can't say I've seen it!
its actually super lame and highly misleading as its a diesel engine which behaves differently and doing this to it is basically death
pretty sure they did this on seinfeld as well
you find them funny? Oh god how low is your IQ?
Makes you wonder how people ever run out of fuel.
For real lmaooo
Older, dumber, less efficient cars probably
My car stops telling me when i hit 50 kms left and if i use the odometer i get legit 10 kms or less once it hits "empty". 2016 lancer too
I think it most probably is depends on the car. Logically speaking though; different car, different performance. I dont know.
Cuz you need to be able to afford an audi

Yeah, it's kind of a dumb video, that reserve is there by design, the machine isn't wrong in any way.

All depends on acceleration and how much petrol you're using. Freeway it'd be barely any
