    could do a waterproof momentary push button there so the button pushes the button underneath

      That’s a great idea. Ben brought up the same thing. I’m gonna look into it! Thanks for watching Bolt!

    Seeing that I keep a small tool kit and tire plug kit and mini compressor on my 2018 Wing at all times. I would use the plug rasp to bore a hole in the door to get to the to the fuel door release when and if it ever happens. No drilling, plastic rivets, rubber/plastic plugs or Velcro for me. I've even put a hacksaw mark and a small drop of red paint on my plug tool so I can use the tool to locate the fuel release door.

      @BigSmittyRiding  Рік тому +1

      Now that’s a smart idea that I never even considered! And I carry a small compressor and a tire plug kit with me as well. Thanks for the great idea, hopefully it will help others who may run into the same issue.

    Nobody probably would have even noticed the push pin unless you brought attention to it. it seems like the way Honda designed the door to open seems flawed. I think the new wing looks great. Gonna play catch up on your vids. Glad you bring up men's mental health it's something that generally gets ignored. But has been shown more attention lately. Some guys really suffer. Know a few guys that do. Good on you, smitty !

      @BigSmittyRiding  Рік тому +2

      Thank you very much Beazer for the kind words and for watching. Yeah, Honda had quite a few oops moments when they designed this bike, but I’m learning to live with them! And I absolutely agree, men’s mental health is a touchy subject but we gotta talk about it and help each other if we can! Thanks again.

    Did it as soon as Max put out his video, using a rubber mushroom plug from my puncture repair kit. Totally waterproof and looks like it belongs there. Pressing the cap, then the release button hardly constitutes a great inconvenience. I can't understand why people moan about this. The filler is as secure as a key operated system plus one less key to worry about.
    As stated in the video, one day this hack might just save your bacon but I've never come across any reports of failures of the cubby door latch.
    Thanks for putting this out there👍

    • @BigSmittyRiding
      @BigSmittyRiding  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the feedback and for watching! Yeah it’s doubtful that a failure will happen but I’m one of those people who has terrible luck… so I figured why not? And I agree it’s a good secure system and having just the fob and not an extra key for the gas cap is pretty convenient

  • @crupert23225
    @crupert23225 Рік тому +1

    I just noticed the link to this video in your latest post and didn't remember watching it, although I did hit the "Like" button at some point. But I didn't comment. Weird.
    I think that mod is genius. We talk on the Valk forum quite a bit about the fuel door latch failing, and there is a very recent thread about it. Someone said just insert a credit card in there between the fuel door and the surround, though I don't know the technique. I actually despise having to remove my key from the ignition, leaning over, inserting the key in the fuel door release slot, and then having to reinsert it in the ignition. It's just cumbersome. I like having a little security and not having to worry about getting siphoned in the middle of the night, but if someone really wanted my gas, all they'd have to do is pry that door open. I would prefer a simpler push-release/push-again to lock type mechanism without the need for a key. Or at least have the key slot on the fuel door where it makes sense. And having to trust the exterior door to open, then trusting that release to work, assuming it "sees" your fob, that's a lot of electro-mechanical stuff to trust not failing when you're desperate for a fill-up.
    That fuel cable is just one more thing to go wrong, and one more item involved in the complicated-enough process of trying to replace an air cleaner on these bikes! Tongue click and fingers pointed back atcha! 👌🕶🏍🏍🏍😎👉🍺🍔🥓🌮🎧🔫🥃

    • @BigSmittyRiding
      @BigSmittyRiding  Рік тому +1

      Thank you my friend! I’ve never had gas syphoned but my dad has and he swears the extra lock mechanism is a life saver. Thanks for watching and for your support my friend!

  • @ROTV-DanLockhart
    @ROTV-DanLockhart Рік тому +3

    Cool fix. I've heard Valkyrie riders complain that the key gets stuck in the gas cap lock, which would also suck. You can pop the gas latch but not get the key out. I like the velcro solution, that'd work on the Valkyrie too.

    • @BigSmittyRiding
      @BigSmittyRiding  Рік тому +2

      Yeah the Velcro solution is an easy fix that would work for the Valkyrie as well. Honda definitely needs to look at the gas cap and fuel door designs on both of these bikes. Thanks for watching and for the comment.

    This would be helpful for Indian too, pretty sure they have the same set up. No what about installing a plunger button instead where you could press the button and it will hit the gas cap button on the inside?

    • @BigSmittyRiding
      @BigSmittyRiding  Рік тому +1

      That’s a great freaking idea Ben! I never thought of that. I may look into a plunger button and see how easy it is to install. Thanks for watching and for the idea!

    Man that is too much work to pop open a gas cap! Flip a lid, push a button and then it opens. I miss having a cap that was right there, ready to go!! Good mod though. I hate all the fancy electronics that require the key to be in a certain place for things to work. I live electronics but not when it makes everything complicated.
    My sub numbers have skyrocketed lately, and I have no idea who, or why. I wwnt from about 65 last summer to now 170 or so. Oh well! Happy to have them! Never saw you drink wine before. That's a first! Just happy to see you having a sippy!

    Good advise and all owners should do the same. I did mine too. The only thing I changed was drilling 1/8" hole and sealed it with black RTV from the inside. So, you barley see it. I carry now 1/8" longer Allen key in my tool pack to break the RTV and push on the door switch. Thank you for that.

    Your fix i think is a least a little more secure than the velcro method. You would think there would be enough negative feedback from that honda would have figured something else out after 5 years. Honda is keeping old Max in the money.

      @BigSmittyRiding  Рік тому +1

      You ain’t lying, Max has made a killing off Hondas design flaws! Thank you for the feedback and for watching!

  • @petex1568
    @petex1568 Рік тому +2

    The real cure is to fix the cause which is rain and wash water that runs down the front speaker grill on to the speaker then on to the lock actuator. The water enters the actuator though the tiny vent hole on top of the actuator. The water rusts out the innards causing the actuator failure. You can seal the actuator with silicone sealer and for added measure cover the actuator with a waterproof deflector. I covered the actuator with thin plastic, gorilla tape and zip tied it all together. No more problems in 20k miles. Honda should have a recall for this design flaw, but we all know that won’t happen. Ride on!!!

    • @BigSmittyRiding
      @BigSmittyRiding  Рік тому

      I have never heard this! This is absolutely great information! Thank you very much for sharing this and for watching. I’ll have to look into this and try your fix!

    • @frankward8003
      @frankward8003 Рік тому +1

      I had to replace the actuator with my 2018 because of water getting in to it. After I installed the new actuator I also placed a plastic bag around the top of actuator and used a twisty tie around the bottom to hold it in place..the plastic tent should keep the water from dripping on the actuator and keep the water out of the part....for the 2020 model the actuator has a different part number so Honda has probably addressed the water getting into the actuator starting with the 2020 model.

    This solution was a good choice until the fuel door latch mod was thought of...with the fuel door latch modified you can simply lift the fuel door up with your finger if the need ever arises...otherwise everything works and looks like OEM...the drill a hole in your fairing side pocket lid is a obsolete solution. A modified fuel door latch can be bought from a guy on the GL1800riders forum...or you can do the mod yourself in 5 minutes with a simple grinder once you see the latch and see how simple it is. Go to the GL1800Riders forum to see the fuel door latch mod.
