I’ve since worked through a vacuum leak on cylinder two and blockage in the oil line and crank pulley rubbing. The engine is running so much better now and doesn’t sound so hideous as it does here.
And from such humble beginnings...lol. You wonder why you've got 1000 subscribers? It's because you're just like most of us... it won't be show ready when we're finished but it'll solve our craving to rebuild an icon. Good Job!
Good stuff. Just started to watch your videos I like how you are diy motivated like me. I recently picked up a 73 beetle as a project car working on it here and there. Keep the videos coming!
Working on it now. Haven’t gotten there yet. Just glued the carpet down this morning, so the interior is next. It’ll be done over two episodes, one on the carpet and sides, and one of the seats themselves.
Good ear! It was due to a little clearance I had to pound into it to clear the oil filter lines. I’ve shimmed it and the alternator pulley out 1/8”, which fixed it.
great effort, but your engine doesn't sound healthy at all. not sure if that's the fan hitting or something internal. not sure if you installed a new cam and lifters, but you had to bring your engine immediately to 2000 -2500 rpms for 20 min. for proper break in. Stop driving it asap. you might cause more damage. hope it was nothing major and I'm definitely not hating on you. just trying to help.
I agree, and I know you’re not hating. Did a little testing, and I’ve got a dead cylinder #2. When I pull the leads from each spark plug, the engine idle changes, except #2. Not sure why. I’ve swapped plugs and leads and the distributor cap, and I’ve checked the valve lash and timing. All seems good but still no joy. I’ll check compression again tomorrow. Oh, and as for what I did, just a ring job and clean up. Didn’t do anything to the crank and rods.

Awesome! Hope to get my '69 running tomorrow. Your videos have been a great help!

Fantastic!!! Building a 68 now... That day is a bit in the future for me, hope it goes as well as yours!!
If I can do it, you can, Bob! Trust me on that.
Thanks. Working on the front end now... goin' for those ball joints later today.. can't wait!
Bob
Just don’t do it like I did! Get a ball joint press or something. Brute force and tunnel vision take too long. :-)
Yeah, after watching your video on it, I wanted to throw something! Went to Harbor Freight and bought a ball joint tool for $20. Worked like a charm!
Been a year, how'd that 68 build go Bob?
Well done Sir, well done indeed. Been following along since Ep01. Inspirational.
Hell yeah! Glad to see it moving down the road.

New one coming out soon. Just doing all the tiny jobs now that take time and aren’t any fun. Almost there!
Cool! Is your 73 fuel injected?
Great series, I just finished watching them all. I subscribed. Thank You for sharing your video, and sharing your project with us. ATB
Thanks for watching, Jack! More episodes coming soon.
Yes!!! The guitar clip at the startup was awesome

Beastie Boys - (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)
Brilliant video, gives me hope with my own project that I haven't managed to get to run yet. It almost fires, just doesn't run.
Now I just have to get it running right!

Sounds awesome!
I'm digging it myself. Now I just have to recheck EVERYTHING to make sure I don't kill it.
School St. Garage Okay. Good luck!
Yeap, when it moves that way it is a cylinder not working. Pretty good job anyhow. "Shaky cam" lol. Love it 😂😂
Yea!
Great job!!!
Congrats on the car and subs...
Thanks, man. I’m watching your progress, too. You’re doing great work, Ross!
Tucker
very very very good job bob in the uk 8/10
It’s alive!!! Nice!
Great job on the resto, looking at the decklid it is a 70 model, check chassis number to find out for sure.
Definitely a ‘69. The Bug has parts from later years due to an engine swap and a minor fender bender at some point.
0:16 - The synth used in 'Beat It' by Michael Jackson!
Nice job!
Thanks!
It's alive, it's alive!!!!
Way to go!
4:18 "Fight for your Right" Priceless LOL
I have enjoyed the bug project. I have 1974 super beetle. It needs brake work.
Just new drum shoes, or something more than that?
I bought new complete brakes and a disc brake kit for the front.
Gotcha. New drop spindles or are you keeping yours stock?
Keeping stock spindles.
I forgot do you have video on putting in the red interior?

sounds like pulley is rubbing tin.

Lol 1 cylinder ?
And no oil pressure! But at that point on that particular day, my standards were quite low.
