    Margaret Dumont knew quite well what all of the jokes meant- she later said it was important to Groucho to claim she was clueless to his humor so she didn’t protest;
    after all she had been a long time show girl, and was more than experienced in life!

      The greatest straight woman/comedy foil in the business! And you can tell she got the jokes. She hides a sly grin and waits for the laugh to subside in every scene. But she knew how important it was to play her part, and she carried it off perfectly.

    "Tragic?" She died at 82 (the newspapers of the time erroneously said she was 75), still in fine health, and still active, just after having played her last role in a movie the year prior, and filing a big special on stage a couple of days before her death! That's the very opposite of a tragic death!

      This. I appreciate the video, but the title is a bit off base. 82 is a good age (I'm sure I won't be thinking that when/if I make it to 81!) but by all accounts she did OK up until then.

    " Outside of a book, dog is man's best friend........, inside of a dog, it's too dark to read." Groucho Marx.
    Sign that was on display at our local library once.

      Good heavens! You misquoted it and ruined the joke! "Outside of a dog, a book is man's...."

      "I laughed from the moment I picked up your book until I put it down. Some day I intend to read it."

    Why was her death "tragic"? She was "with it" to the end and died of a heart attack at 75.

    Hello. I must be going. I came to say I cannot stay. I must be going.

    0:45 "The Cocoanuts" was made in 1929 (not 1928)

    I remember that episode of Hollywood Palace, but until now didn't realize that was Melinda Marx, all grown up and lovely, introducing her Dad.
    Footnote: The Palace was where Racquel Welch (née Tejada ) got her start, in 1964 as the Billboard Girl, at the end of the show, showing lots of leg, holding up signs with entertainers' names on them, announcing the coming attractions.
    "And now here's Racquel, to tell you who will appear next week"

      Yeah Boy ! And Racquel has to be the prettiest octogenarian in Hollywood. (she's 82 now !). Of course you know Hollywood Palace started as a replacement for Jerry Lewis' ill-conceived 2-hour (!) live talk show (painful to watch).

    Just about every death is a sad thing, but tragic?

    I really enjoy your trivia channel, thank you! Her death may have been because of the stress of doing prime time TV with Groucho after all of those years? Sort of reminds me to what happened to Willy at the end of The Sunshine Boys.

      Interesting comment, I'd never heard that.
