    The internet certainly lacks quality content on everything sprinting-related. Meanwhile, there is a ton of shit about marathon and long distance running. This is so unfair.

    As a coach this is the most important thing i teach. It is amazing that nearly all athletes I run into do not know the importance of their hips in sprinting, or what it means to push, or pushing through the ground when running.
    It’s funny watching this I said man of this explains why he was so successful running, he understands mechanics and actually uses his hip!

    Thank you for this video! I was having issues with this and was wondering why I was moving so slow even though my cadence was high. I wasn’t activating my hips enough.

    I think it's easier to keep your ankle over the knee and not dropping it if you have good rotation in your spine so that your shoulders move more back and forth.
    That American you mentioned lacked rotation in this spine, I believe.

    I find that most people find it easy to flex, it's the lack of extension that causes "low hips"

    Hi Dwain, really helpful video, i was curious, what strength exercises do you prefer to strengthen the hamstrings? or do you prefer to avoid direct hamstring work outside of sprint sessions?

    Hey Dwain, great insightful information on your page man, i was wondering if there's a difference between pulling the heel to bum or hamstring than the calf to hamstring?

      Martimus B Good question. Check the video attached. Youll see that all the athletes run the same. They all fold the leg so as to accommodate calf to hamstring or heal to bum. Avoid heal to bum with the knee pointing down to the ground. This will result in a butt kicking action.

    Good info. So don't bend the knees when landing? But wouldn't that stop springiness? Also, can these techniques be used for long distance running?Thanks.

      Watch Kenesisa Bekele run the 5000m, slow it down to 1/4 speed and you'll see his knees clamping, his ankles coming up and no buckle in his hips, even in the last lap. So, in short, yes!

    hey Dwain when you talk about the calf and hamstring meeting isn't that a pulling motion. i here a lot of people say push instead of pull

      ben pugh push or pull. It's just a case of wording and what method works best for the individual. If I tell my self to push I'll focus my attention on pushing my knee forward. If I tell myself to pull I'll focus on calves to hamstring. I tend to push from the blocks and pull as I start to establish an upright posture

      understood. I have another question Dwain i really want to get my 200m and 400m time's down would doing long run's help. When i watch these distance runners they seem to run 200m in 25's and 400m in 50's so effortlessly

      ben pugh: Run long distances as a means of supplying your body with a good level of base fitness. Good base fitness will enable you to perform consistent levels of sprint and speed endurance. Long runs strengthen the muscles of your heart which enables your body to perform more efficiently.
      Be careful running to many long distances as you'll slow your fast twitch muscles to a rate that accommodates your ability to run longer.
      You want to run faster for longer and not run slower for longer!

    Great video. In the "maximum speed" stage are your hips/pelvis tucked therefore in posterior rotation OR in neutral position? Some videos say tuck the hips but if the hips are posterior rotated the lower spine becomes rounded which is a dangerous position for force transferring. Alternatively Michael Johnson videos say stay upright to drive more force into the ground which therefore eliminates the rounded spine from the posterior rotated hips/pelvis, similar to maintaining a neutral spine in hip extension in a deadlift, but is this only during the "drive phase". What are your thoughts?

      Good question. The entire chain should remain in alignment from your head, shoulder, hip and knee. This video gives a good description to your question.

      The key is to set your hips from the 'on your marks' position. Prior to that you will need to drill this action so that it become second nature. Once second nature you won't need to think about these things at the start of the race.

      Hi Enrique. It would be good to perform dribbles from a ankle height for a set period of time. Then progress to mid calf height then knee height. I've found this a useful drill to help develop the discipline required to avoid over striding.
      The key will be to perform this drill and carry it into a slow running tempo. As confidence grows you'll feel encouraged to increase the rate of intensity with the running portion of the drill.

    Are you ever supposed to attack the ground during the flight phase? Or do you just hold a firm front hip and dorsiflex...
    I've heard that at max frontside knee height, you drive the foot down the ground and prepare for ground contact. Once you hit mid-stance, you focus on driving the knee up again.
    What do you personally feel between when your leg is at peak height in frontside swing and when you're at mid-stance?

      Jonathan Berk Really and truly all the details you'll get from text books/videos and coaches will vary. Technical drills are necessary as it teaches your mind to deliver the drills in the correct way.
      Once in race mode you will focus on running and executing the correct leg action.
      In some circumstances when telling an athlete to strike the ground it can result in a shortening or the stride or chopping/stabbing action.
      In my opinion once you perform the 'pulling' action of the calf to hamstring your non pulling leg will naturally work downward toward the ground so as to accommodate and prepare for the next step and so forth.

      I have no objection to these type of drills, However I'd advise you perform these in a good technical manor. Maintain good form and relate the drills to your personal running style. Avoid performing drills in relation to what others do and make them suitable to you.

      keith gladden: I want you to decide based on the following.
      Driving the knee up will encourage your torso to lean backward to accommodate the upwards knee angle.
      Driving the knee down, especially when in fatigue or under external pressure will result in a short choppy stride.
      Allowing the hamstring and the entire calf muscle to meet will result in good ground clearance, excellent hip height, good maintenance of speed and excellent efficiency with very little expenditure of energy.
      Your knee is the equivalent to the spine of a book. When held closed the pages represent your hamstring and calves touching one another.
      Fold the knee or close the book!

    Its amazing how much of these fundamentals olympic level athletes violate. Actually high hip running to me is the most difficult aspect of the sport. If at all it is a muscle memory thing, its a habit because even if the hips are strong some people land bent at the knee anyway. That stems from bad habit.
