What's Behind The Firefly's Glow | What's Inside?

- The firefly is probably the Earth’s most famous bioluminescent species, with over 2,000 individual species. And the secret to its light comes from two essential components: luciferin and luciferase. But while the firefly may have evolved its lantern as a form of protection, today the lightning bugs use their light as a species-specific mating ritual. Here’s what really happens inside the firefly’s lantern.

Fireflies >>>>>>>>> LIghtbulbs
It really is interesting how efficient the firefly's lantern is!
Its restricting them from mating idk
@@BeanOnTheFlipside mister why is their a hand in ur pocket 😅
@@BeanOnTheFlipside how does it restrict them? She literally just said it helps
I've always enjoyed fireflys! This is the best non-technical explanation I've seen. Thank you!
I've finally understand now
Fireflies are the real original firebenders, not dragons
So who are the real original waterbenders?
😂❤️ 🔥 lord Zuko big fan
@@thanthanh5190 let's find out 😂
Their light doesn't even produce heat...
@@aquaeious16 we enjoy the joke so we do not care
It's sad that I don't see nearly the amount of fireflies (or lightning bugs as my kids call them) as I used to when I was a kid. I thought I was just imagining things. Now I know I'm not.
Sad man ❤️😢
I never seen them since 2017 im wondering what happen to them? Climate change or chemicals?
@@alexsmith1207 bit of both 😐😔
Fireflies are incredible creatures, they’re like the light during the night. And it’s so awesome that it’s like small dots in the sky lighting up the dark nights.
Last but not least, fireflies represent energy. Natural energy, and economic energy. But it also has the meaning of economy and efficiency because they use their environment in order to be as effective as possible and in order to gain their energy. Fireflies are fascinating little creatures.
❤️🔥 thq 💞
i remember kids catching them when i was a kid too, never saw one again in 15 years
Yeah man sad life ❤️ ( well I'm from India and I see them when I visit my Village it's beautiful ❤️)
@@LegalStolenAMVs same with me too in india, I miss those childhood days.
@@divasv ❤️🔥🙌
People keep catching them and soon they're will extinct.
Damn it’s a shame you don’t see them anymore, I’m lucky I guess to see them every summer out on Long Island but deff not as much as it was when I was a kid.
I had never seen a firefly in my life until I was in my late 30's. It was amazing I was in awe like a child seeing something awesome for the first time. My colleague was having fun seeing my experience and laughing. You see I am from California and have never seen one in my entire life until that day...a most memorable experience nature is soooo cool.
Same with me, I'm 34 and I saw one flying around my room as I was trying to fall asleep last night. I had no idea what it was so I crushed it because it was freaking me out, I feel bad now they are interesting insects.
I live in a part of Germany that's supposed to have fireflies, but I've never seen one despite being outside a lot. I hope I'll see them someday
0:17 The Answer is found in the Bugs Butt
Lmao
Thats why we have to look inside it.
@@willieboi6115 👀yeah
Yes. Da booty is the key to knowledge.
You would not believe your eyes if ten million fireflies, lit up the world as I fell asleep
I went to the comment section specifically for this comment 😄

A true scientist. I am at peace.
Lol
Excellent observation
I remember being in Central Park one evening with my partner and we were so surprised when we saw all these flying yellow lights in the bushes. So beautiful ❤️
We don't have those in Finland and they are by far my favorite bugs here in USA. I enjoy watching them in the evenings. I feel bad that the numbers are declining :( I hope they never disappear I want to keep enjoying them as long as I can. Thanks :)
I wonder if the fireflies consciously adjust their light patterns like moving their hands or automatically like a heartbeat
Probably fire
Lol
Very simple and lucid explanation. Nature's beauties are truly magnificent! I didn't know that these little wonders were facing threats.
I wouldn't want to live in a world without fireflies too💖💖
For anyone who hasn’t seen fireflies before, please add it to your bucket list. It’s one of those experiences that changes how you see the world. Like diving
Eh I grew up catching them and does t change my world view much. I guess it depends on if we have the same world view
@@kachoww5981 maybe that’s because you grew up with them so it’s not special
This is giving me The Last Of Us flashbacks.
😢 it's scary and Hard to digest how cruel humans are
Nice explanation,+ precises detail 💯💯💯
This is sad. I have nieces and nephews that have not seen a firefly. ☹️
when she said " waitwaitwaitwaitwait, bleeeeeep, bleeeep" i felt that.
So we're literally watching bugs bootycalling eachother
everything life does in nature is strictly to survive (food, defense and mating)
lucky enough to spend some time at my in-laws in the Province; witnessed some of these beautiful creatures chasing each other... 🥰
and it is such a wonderful view!
Eversince my childhood, I've wanted to see fireflies in real life. I still haven't had the chance, and it's worse knowing that they're now endangered.
This is actually my seminar topic.so glad I found this
Great video!
It has been years since I saw a firefly , like 5 years at least, I don't think this generation will ever see one at this point
Amazing on, how we are all connected towards energy.. light attract light
Great Video.
I grew up in Vegas. I am in Texas and saw my first firefly. I swear I felt like I saw a damn unicorn. I almost felt like they weren't real like a jackalope or something. And here I am am rofl
i remember when i was young.. i keep on spotting them.. but now, my 10 yr old niece hasn't seen 1 ever.. sad
Oh the magic of fireflies! Truly spectacular! 🌟

why can't we use bioluminescence to produce light if it's 100% efficient?
I was thinking the same thing, I wonder if there’s any updates to this experiment I found
Modern light bulbs give off wayyyyy less heat
The point is that fireflies give off virtually no heat.
So your telling me it’s basically their lungs... like when we breathe in and out our lungs expand and contract just like there light turns on when they breathe in and turn off when they breathe out.
I still see fireflies, but they're not as common as they were in my first 25 years. And I don't want to live in a world without fireflies! I just took a video of them to show my mom, she's in a different state and misses them. Thanks for this!
I miss seeing fireflies so searched YT and this is what I found.
I'm so sad about the fact that their number are decreasing...🙁
There's one that enter my room once. I was wondering why a flickering light moving around. Scare the hell out of me.
There were so many fireflies in my garden day before yesterday. 💡❤
I love fireflies,, thank you so much after finally seeing
Best video.
I don't wanna live in a world without fireflies
TY 😊
great❤
Awesome
I haven't seen a firefly in years, figured they were dying out
You wouldn't believe your eyes, if 10,000,000 fireflies lit up the world as I fell asleep.
My daughter just caught one tonight! Of course, she set it free.
You would not believe your eyes...
11 and when ever I was like, 5 6. Or 7, my dad used to take me outside. After I took a bath to catch fireflies with me in tonight, I caught one in a tiny little jar in fact, I caught 2 in my hands. It made me so happy to bring myself back to that memory, and then I was curious, how do they glow, So I came to this video.was very useful, I feel so happy inside
Awesome dude someone in my family saw this 2
Im from some rural areas of central PA and theres almost no light. They put on some wild light shows in the corn fields and other fields.
I always wanted to know this
I remember summer nights were full od this wonderfull creatures but now I only see few, last summer I saw just one 😢
I noticed something flashing and moving around in my room last night and it freaked my out so I chased it down and crushed it. Turns out it was a firefly which I've never seen before... fascinating insect, next time I won't crush it...
When I was 6 yo I sometimes find a lot of fireflies in my garden, but today i found nothing .. and it's sad
It’s true, hard to find fireflies now instead when I was a kid. Sad 🙁
Can't we recreate this? For any benefits for us. 100% efficient. Biological. Make our body glow 😼
It reminds me of Grave of the fireflies (1988) anime 😭😭
I've just seen a firefly. It has been years since I last saw one
I always wanted to know that
so cute wait wait wait wait wait~
1. Encourage to save fireflies so the next generation can see it
2. Encourage kids to capture fireflies in a bottle for fun
As young: they use it to tell bugs to not eat them As adult: [insert saxophone music here]
before there were lots of fireflies in our backyard. Now, you cant see any firefly even in the farmside
You would not believe your eyes if 10 million fireflies lit up the world as i fall asleep
I don't want to live in a world without fireflies........
There is a firefly in my house right now. But it not glowing when its sleeping.. why is that so
I love fireflies. 😍
EXPLOSIVE BRENDEN - Aww, you do too. You just won't admit it. Unless you had other motives for watching this video?
“Trying to capture the lightning in the bottle” that ending is a bummer 🤦🏻♂️
Even in our country Phils I rarely seen fireflies nowdays unlike before due to the fact that thier habitat had been detriorated also can be attributed to polution thats is why these luminous insects are disappearing.
I’m pretty sure that about 90% of the energy in a light bulb turns into light while the other 10% becomes heat, this is of LED’s
I see them all the time. In fact, I was just watching them and wanted to know how high they fly because some of the flashes were quite high up. I guess those are the males and the females were the ones close to the ground.
Batteries? 😆👀
If we could havest the power of the firefly's efficient lighting, our flashlights would be 10x more powerful 🤔
Its been a decade since I last saw a firefly.
@EXPLOSIVE BRENDEN this is a comment section, don't forget that. Baka!
@EXPLOSIVE BRENDEN did I ask for your reply?
I havent seen a firefly YET but
I have seen them in movies
Okay I suggest you to watch "Grave of fireflies" If you haven't
No 1 1st
This world was a forest land when I was a kid and I have seen many fireflies hovering over the dark and deepest part of our surroundings when I walked out at nights and I enjoyed it very much but as I have grown up deforestation have decreased this insects appearance very much and for one of this insects I must hover now from places to places
I remember squishing the light inside of them
Short answer is?
Last seen 1997 8 😢 miss my childhood n fire fly 🪰
I saw them in 2018 and after that i never saw them for 5 years
I have never seen a firefly.I've lived in Southern California and in Utah. They don't seem to be in those places.
One is taking rest on my arm
That's why i like darknes, not full just dim light
Hi where r fireflies, i plan to breed. I feel like feeding roaches jellyfish it can become firefly?
I'm only here for the expert's bleep sound effects
The saddest thing is i cant see even one fire fly now so its true that this creature is in danger
Now that we're talking about fireflies I want to remind you of "grave of the fireflies"
❤
My cousin and I got into arguments over what the name of them were fireflies or lightning bugs... I'm from Massachusetts and he's from Georgia, maybe it could be a different slang for them down south...
They are Fireflies. Right.?
As kids my friends and I would take squeeze the firefly light and rub it on our foreheads and it still would glow. The things that kids will do !🤣🤔
Tak² maw
My neighborhood is lit up and we have tons of fireflies
That’s pretty sad that these insects are going out
