      @@Kenjh71 that's a down right stupid comment, the 170 will be a few inches longer and weigh MAYBE 100lbs more, but the car will have lost its AC power steering and countless other items that would more than make up for any weight gain.
      A BP (an engine that came in this car and in no way made it a pig) comes in at about 300lbs, a 225 weighs about 475lbs in its heaviest iterations, a 170 weighs signigantly less already and is likely to get some weight removed during the swap.
      Answer me this.... if Tony said he was keeping the stock engine but adding a turbo would you protest that the 100lbs of turbo kit would turn it into a pig? Or have you not actually given this any real thought?

    Hi Uncle Tony. I have been driving a buddy’s 1966 Mercedes Benz 250se four speed which is actually a “gray market “ car that imported was imported by a serviceman in 1968. I totally dig what you are saying about the perfect combination. The engine in this is very comparable with the engine you are installing in your Miata. The Mercedes engine has a bore of 3.23 to the 170’s 3.4, stroke 3.1 to the 170’s 3.125. The horsepower of the Mercedes is 170 SAE and 173 ft. Pounds to the low performance 170’s 101 horsepower and 155 ft pounds. You should easily exceed my 170 up. What impressed me about the Mercedes is how “Fluid “ and fun it is to drive with the four speed. It’s final drive gear ratio is on the low side, about 3,750 rpm at 65-70 mph but it’s very happy there. I’m sure that you will be very happy with your engine choice but this is what I’m curious about. What engine block are you planning on using aluminium or cast iron and the same question about the cylinder head and what is going to be your transmission choice? I’m a weird combination of British car and Muscle car guy. Who also street raced heavily in the 1980’s and 1990’s.

I came back and watched it when I heard you were putting a 170 slant six in it. I'm a fan of the older carbureted British sports cars like the Triumph TR6 and Spitfire, MGB, and several others. I've never considered a Miata because of the EFI. I want no part of EFI, or any other computer trash on a car. Glad you are doing it right.

    My first new car was a 1970 Duster with a 225 slant six. I was working at a Chrysler Plymouth Imperial dealer at the time. I asked the senior mechanic how I should break it in, he said warm it up get it out on the freeway head south, when you get past the city limits see how fast it will go! If it blows up we have warranty to fix it, if not it will be a good one. It didn't blow up and outlived the Duster and went on to power another one. He also adjusted the transmission so it would shift at 6000 rpm at full throttle. With the 2.76 gears that was 70 mph in second gear. It didn't have enough power to hit 6000 rpm in high and toped out at 110. In the summer of 1971 I drove it from east Kansas to Grand Rapids Michigan (735 miles) in 10 hours including food and gas stops.

    You should use the 170 as a "3-D" basis for a 225 V-8 like the WV VR-6, where the pistons run in a Very-shallow Vee. You only need one DOHC head to cover the pots, and the length would be 30" or less, because of the Vee. If you're "3-D-ing" the engine you can use alumino-titanium fused-metal, making it strong AND light.

    Hey Tony, have a project idea for you. Recently dropped a VW Diesel into my 1990 Geo Tracker 4X4. I had the diesel completely torn down. It looked perfect. All the dimensions were well within spec. Bearings looked perfect. Rings were clean, springy and the right gap. Hand lapped the valves and put all brand new gaskets in it. Got everything set to factory specs. Runs like crap and no power. Compression tested it, 250/250/110/000. Supposed to be 300-350ish. I'm about crying here, LOL. After watching your MIata slant project it makes me wonder how great the 170 slant would power a lightweight offroader. I'm disabled on a really limited income. So this was kind of a hard hit.

    Hey Tony, As to your rollover bar, I am a mechanical engineer. I don't trust anything or anybody. I know how strong structural things need to be. For the large part, just by looking at them. If I were installing that bar, it would immediately be clear to me that it needs to be mounted like..... well like strong enough to resist the car flipping over. It would not even enter into my mind to use it as is, with 2 bolts in some 1/8" thick steel plates. The problem is people have expectations concurrent with the current state of entitlement society. People in the general population are not smart, and expect to buy a solution for everything. They do not put any burden on themselves to be responsible for something they are involved in. This is a custom aftermarket part. Not an engineered factory piece. In my mind, it is natural to expect the user/installer to verify that it is fit for the intended use. If it was engineered to work out of the box to be a safety item, maybe it would have some UL or Interek testing sticker associated with it. Or a Snell rating or NHRA certified or something. But lacking this, I would assume it is an ornamental dress up item only. Only unless I make sure it fulfills MY use requirements. I agree with you. People want it all perfect and they want it for free. Sounds like a politician's speech to me. Stay real. ---Doozer

    It's interesting that the original smaller capacity versions of an engine are often the best balanced and sweetest running. The later higher capacity versions are an after thought that undoes some of the designers good work. 170cu in a Miata (MX5 in the UK), that's gonna be interesting. 👍

  • @MegaBuster777
    @MegaBuster777 3 роки тому +1

    I'd say the issue with the 225 over the 170 was the increased stroke without changing the length of the rods. I'd say it's putting too much force on the cylinder walls because of the return stroke or the compression stroke as it's less linear up and down. I only suspect that because an issue I had on my 4g64 was it burned an awful lot of oil. by 190k miles, the rings were toasted. the engine had a 100mm stroke and the same exact rod out of the 4g63 (150mm), which had a stroke of only 88mm. Sure, the deck height was also 12mm higher to compensate in the 4g64, but it didn't fix the poor stroke to rod ratio. The engine was torquey as hell. I tried teaching a friend how to drive manual with it and you couldn't stall it out no matter how bad you dump it, but when it came down to it, it just burned so much oil to the point it starved out one day and spun a bearing. I wish I still had it, just to examine it, but I considered building it with a shorter 94mm crank and 162mm rods with the custom pistons where the wrist pin was moved up 6mm and see if I could basically make a screamer of Sirius hybrid of sorts, building out the flaws of the engine and making higher end horsepower. Money and time was the limiting factor to that project, but I still got my '89 Conquest at least. It's got it's own flaws, but the stroke to rod ratio isn't one of them on the stock engine in that.

    At first I was apprehensive about a slant in a Miata, cause I thought it would detract from all which makes a Miata beautiful. But after hearing your explanation, it all makes sense. I just hope, with all your recent emphasis on weight savings, that you can make a slant-powered Miata as light, or maybe even lighter, than the original 1.6L Miata
    Good luck, Uncle Tony!
    (Also I think a car like this deserves a 4-speed, not a torqueflite)

  • @danderson9881
    @danderson9881 3 роки тому +1

    I think that Miata and the 170 will be great! Alot more torque than its used to, with an engine that will not die, with little maintenance. Just Fun! Seen a Miata a few years ago with a 5.0 Ford Windsor, kept it EFI, it was cool, but he was constantly messing with the electronics, to make it talk to the car. Sounded mean, yet reminded me of a Sunbeam Tiger. Add a simple engine, that takes little parts, and just Enjoy the damn car!

    hi Uncle Tony, I gave you credit for knowing how to install a roll bar like that.
    If you are SCCA track racing in some kind of open class you would need a cage.
    I didn't connect your hunt for a 170 slant six to this project and
    I think you will have a nice sports car with that engine.
    I mostly an hoping you can make it street legal.
    They may try to make you meet the Miata emissions standards.
    Consider getting the title for the engine and registering it as a modified Dart...

    Nobody commented on bracing your “mousetrap” style bar because companies make actual roll bars that have been crash tested/SCCA approved and they aren’t that expensive. I bet you could make yours work but it’s a backwards way to do it and a crazy place to save a few bucks IMO. Awesome project though.

    Have you ever considered working on the V-6 Magnum engine? Being it's a cut-down Chrysler V-8, there may be plenty one could do to it based on the V-8, and it'd likely fit into the Miata easier.

    Just a tip for a recessed firewall.
    Instead of using fabricating something up you can just use the tub off a wheel Barrow, saves you hours of fab looks clean and isn't much more expensive than the sheet you will use.
