I heard Anja Silja as the Queen of the Night in Vienna in 1959 - with Leontyne Price as Pamina!

Nice to hear her as the Götterdämmerung Brünnhilde; the Walküre one is usually the only one you can find online. What I really want to hear are those roles she sang in Braunschweig as a teenager: Rosina, Olympia, Fiordiligi, Konstanze et al, but I don't suppose tapes exist of those. Someone finally uploaded her Queen of Night from Aix-en-Provence, and it's pretty intense. Too bad her Elektra isn't available in better sound. Thank God for the 'official' recordings: the Bayreuth Senta, Elisabeth, Eva, Freia, Blumenmädchen and Third Norn, as well as the studio Senta, Salome, Lulu and Marie, and also the Fidelio film from Hamburg. There was also an LP of Tosca excerpts in German with James King; I'm not sure that ever made it to CD. I saw her as the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten in San Francisco in 1987, and she was a force of nature. It's not really a mezzo role: the first Nurse, in Vienna in 1919, was dramatic soprano Lucie Weidt, and Silja made the role her own, at least for the duration of the San Francisco run. A mesmerising artist.

Rattus Yu It must have been taken down. I saw it online a couple of years ago, a black and white video.

I know, I also saw it years ago, it must be her student recital or something, somewhere around 1960 if I remember one of the comments there. Too bad it had to be taken down. =(

Rattus Yu No, it wasn't a student recital, it was her appearance in the role at Aix-en-Provence that was famously reviewed by Andrew Porter. Her career started with a raft of coloratura roles at the Braunschweig Opera when she was fifteen years old, so I don't think she ever had much time for student recitals.

Amazing voice, I hope more early recordings would be uncovered. I'm sure someone has a secret tape somewhere...

Brava! This is from a 1971 Helsinki concert, at which Mme Silja also sang the Liebestod. Jussi Jalas, who led the early recital albums of Beverly Sills and Norman Treigle for Westminster, was the conductor.

I am not certain, but I suspect it was the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.
