    So basically, had that been the REAL Nael van Darnus, 1.0 might not have happened the way it did at all. The whole of the 1.0 story came down to a homicidal, psychopathic woman who was fueled by the grief of not being able to save her brother.
    You have to wonder, if that had been the real Nael van Darnus all along, would it have played out the same way, or was it just because she was going on a mass killing spree and had some warped vision of what she had foreseen her brother could achieve that led to Bahamut being released?

    Having not played 1.0 I never really cared much for Nael and simply took the character at face value. The fact it was never actually him is an interesting character twist I didn't seen coming though. Kudos to the story and lore team.

    One thing that's always fascinating about the story and lore written for games is ideas, characters and scenarios could be worked on many months or years before they are worked into the game. A lot of story and characters tend to be cut in most games with a hefty amount of story.
    So... it doesn't seem farfetched at all to me that they would twist the story this way. Could have been intended long before 1.0 was even launched. People never truly realize how long this kind of stuff is written and worked on long before you see the end result in the game. Course, at the same time it could have just been an idea cooked up after the fact. I can't appreciate enough when these holes are filled in properly, because this was proper. It makes sense. In how Eula's character developed and how Nael would be a woman in the second coil.

      I suspect that this part of "Nael's" lore was made for the original direction 1.0 was heading before it was realized to be an absolute dumpster fire of a production.
      Sucks we never got to see it in full fruition in the game itself, but sacrifices had to be made for the sake of the relaunch

    I love Nael(is actually Yeula & I hope that i am spelling it right) & for a tragic character . . . . .it impresses me that her insanity drove her to really cause the Seventh Umbral Calamity & the Garleans must feel responsible to allow such a thing to happen.

    On the topic of how the author of Encyclopedia Eorzea would know the "truth", most MMOs have extensive backstory documentation. Some of this gets revealed in the game story, and some does not. With so different writers working on different parts of the story, plus with staff sometimes being replaced, this is the only way to keep the lore straight and avoid story conflicts (even though these still happen sometimes.... quite frequently in some cases.) My guess is, with a lot of planned story being scrapped when they decided to crash a moon into the planet (Dalamud was originally going to be used for a location in an expansion for example) some stuff they had planned to reveal, they realized never would be. This being the case, they allowed the author access to some of this lore to put the Encyclopedia together.

    The way I understood this whole story was that the original plan of SE was that Nael was meant to have been a woman from the start, which was supposed to be a twist not unlike the one Metroid gave us with it's lead some 30 years ago. However, a combination of the fact that the english team gave Nael both a male voice actor and had characters refer to her as him forced them to try to come up with an explanation for the events of coil, where said reveal was to take place.
    I could be very wrong, but as far as I can tell this was a retcon made to justify a translation error. Either way I love this take on the twist and I do find it adds some more grief to Nael's character arc.

    • @cobymalus
      @cobymalus 8 років тому +8

      If I'm not mistaken, Nael deliberately never had a voice actor in 1.0. The problem was the JP team never communicated anything and they used, like for Gaius, male elezen rigging for Nael and unlike japanese english doesn't have natural sounding gender-neutral language.
      It's a retcon, or not, to close up the problem that infected 1.0 at every point of its development. Absolute lack of oversight and communication.

      A good thing that everyone needs to remember and many forget, is that the lore master, the man who wrote most of these stories and is in charge of making sure it's all one coherent world, is ALSO the lead English translator, Mr. Koji Fox. Thus all instances of "him" were intentional and known, and part of the story from the start. The guy who wrote the lore can't exactly fuck up his own translation.

    Most of this was actually retconned as the he/she thing was a translation error. Japanese text didnt use gendered pronouns so the localization team assumed her to be a he, so when the reveal came, they had to figure out a way to resolve the inconsistency, thus came up with this.

    • @ecMonify

      It's only a retcon if it changed something that was fact before. This is new information that explains a long-standing mystery without contradicting anything that we knew for absolute certain. I'm 95% certain that this was decided before Nael ever appeared, even in 1.0.

    • @ColorOfSakura
      @ColorOfSakura 8 років тому +5

      The way Nael was written and presented in 1.0 was deliberately vague - based on everything from that time, I am certain that Nael was always supposed to be a woman and that the story was simply muddled when they tried to explain it. There's a lot of instances of weird localization from early 2.X, all the way up to 2.4 with Haurchefant's personality being changed in the English localization.

    • @BroadwayRonMexico
      @BroadwayRonMexico 5 років тому +5

      @@ColorOfSakura In the case of Haurchefant, it was because at that point the English version wasnt a translation of the JP script. A rough outline is given to the JP and NA teams and they write the script in each concurrently. Haurchefant wasnt fully worked out when his dialog was handed to the script teams, so he wound up pretty different
      Nael was indeed due to translation issues though, since everything was done differently in 1.0

  • @SigmaTheWhiteFlame
    @SigmaTheWhiteFlame 3 роки тому +1

    Question why are you using male pronouns when Nael is a woman in the original version. Japanese doesn't use pronouns so it was a western mistake to use male pronouns for her. Instead of owning their mistake they falsely changed the lore that "She was a he, but Bahamut's a weird perv and changed her into a woman."

    • @crazy13alex
      @crazy13alex 3 роки тому +2

      Did you watch the full video when you wrote this? Whether it was improvised or not, he did mention that Nael was always Eula, from 1.0 to Coils of Bahamut. "Nael's" gender hadn't changed; we never met the real Nael. Whether they came up with that to fix the he/she confusion or not honestly doesn't matter. Because everything about "Nael"/Eula doesn't change anything other than what Alisaie SPECULATED about her. Both in game and out of it, were fan and npc speculation; meaning they could be disproven.

    NNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAEL
    Also seems like a typical Square-Enix thing where there's a perfectly-acceptable story behind a character (Nael, Xehanort) but then they go and make it 20x more complicated with no prior reasoning.

    • @crazy13alex
      @crazy13alex 4 роки тому +5

      Actually, they had always intended for this to be the story. But with overhauling a game and staff/author changes, it's natural for things to get muddled. You have to acknowledge that it's hard to keep track of aspects of a story when it relied on more than one person to write it. In this case, the reveal of Nael van Darnus being Eula was meant to be the plan but over the years it was never given the clarity it should have had. Keeping it in the Encyclopedia Eorzea was the ONLY way future writers would ever be certain.
      Even then, the "perfectly acceptable story" you're referring to was an on-the-spot theory concocted by characters, AND new writers at the time, who didn't even know about Eula and were only making sense of her with information they did have. That info being that "Nael was to be revealed as female", but the "why" was missing. The Darnus background wasn't made more complicated, it was simplified by writers who didn't have that information until Encyclopedia Eorzea.
      A comment on this video by "Steve Williams" explains it better I feel.
