I’m pretty dang happy right now. Today was by far the best session I’ve ever witnessed in San Diego. As you will see, it’s not the most organized or easy wave to read, but the potential for a session of this level has been in the making for a long time.
I want to send a huge thank you to Damien Hobgood who I’ve been shooting photos of here for nearly a decade. He used to paddle out in psycho conditions where no one thought it was possible, and it was borderline most of those days. His wave from the last El Niño in 2016 was seriously historic (Watch Surfing Magazine’s video: Just Up The Coast) and the same angle I shot that photo, is what I chose to film from today. He also helped babysit my daughter Koura this morning so I could shoot, and then helped line up our friend Kevin to continue babysitting all our kids when he paddled out.
I also want to thank Skip McCullough. La Jolla local and a core icon! You can tell he was waiting for the stars to align to show what he can do out there. Amazing performance. Someone pay this man!
What was originally supposed to be a short window of me filming this morning turned into 7:15am-3pm on the sticks, zero food or water, dodging parking tickets, editing until the late hours of the next morning, and about to drive straight to Mammoth with my daughter and girlfriend on no sleep, just pure passion!
I hope you have the same enjoyment watching this footage as I did shooting it!
Surfers:
Skip McCullough
Damien Hobgood
Tosh Tudor
Balaram Stack
Kobe Hughes
Cliff Kapono
Duran Barr
Shea Perkins
Kyle Buthman
I’m sorry for the names I don’t know!
This raw footage is so much sicker than a soundtrack, the commentary makes it feel like youre there!
Always.
yes you can soak in all the bullshit.
Love the live streaming effect. Great footage!
It’s fun watching all the lajolla hipsters
San Diego or Padang?
I’m a San Diego native and have surfed all over SD county.
I am now (and permanently) unable to get into the water due to complications from cancer surgery.
I appreciate you capturing these amazing moments in SD. 🙏🏼
I live vicariously through any surf vids.
So sorry to hear that but happy to send you stoke
you aint alone bro, been surfing Norcal since the 60s and age and injuries have now taken over........time for the young uns to have their day.
Sending you all love and happiness 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I am sorry to hear of your setback
I am sorry to hear of your physical disability
The perfect footage. No music, no special effects... It's just like being there. FINALLY! Thank you for this!
I surfed Sunset cliffs yesterday. It’s was unbelievable. Broke my favorite board. There were only 8 of us out there, very experienced locals. 5 of us broke boards. That’s a 62.5 % kill ratio lol. And the shore break paddling in from that was just insanity.
Yeah,we went by at about 2:00 pm and it was mammoth. A bit lumpy though. We should have gone to Dolphin tanks too.
@@Elloguvanahyah I bet you’re just the sickest charger out at 50 foot jaws! We all wish we were as cool as you
@@Elloguvanah 100% you didn’t paddle out yesterday. But it’s ok, we need onlookers and critics. Leave the surfing to the men.
@@Elloguvanahhaha real shit, cliffs is such a pussy wave
Fvckin great vid. Ventura Local.
I was surfing in Pacific beach 2 days ago and my leash snapped and was in the impact zone of 10-12ft waves for a couple minutes! These waves don’t play around, I’m happy I made it back
How tf u get out
You still use a leash? Grow up.
Like many of these rock slab bottoms on La Jolla point, at low tide the inside slab rock at this place is about one to two feet deep. With a series of ledges that go out deeper and deeper at an extreme ratio, which is why it gets so dam hollow and powerful. I enjoyed surfing it in the 60's through to the late 90's, in the lesser crowded days. But when it gets this heavy you don't really have to worry because only the good guys are out. I'm retired now. Too many sports injuries for a 67 year old. It's definitely a spot for gnarly young surfers in their prime.
This used to be my spot back in the early 90's!!! Absolutely love seeing guys charge this place. Ron would be stoked!!! Miss you buddy!
Best footage I've seen of this swell. Excellent work.
Glad you enjoyed it 🙌
Came here to say the same!!
I am an old guy, ex Californian in Atlanta… what a cool watch this was. Thanks from the dirty south! Man, when the sun came out, it just went straight magical!
Keep coming back to this. 12:05 and elsewhere mini-Chopes, super thick round barrels pealing off the clear subtropical waters of the Southern California Countercurrent. Spectacular. I've been out of surfing for a while having only just moved back to near the coast. I had no notion this was kicking off, except I could smell the salt spray from 7 miles inland! Just a really cool natural event, both mother nature and these surfers putting on a show!
That's insane! I learned to surf on Pacific Beach last year and now I surf on Lake Michigan but these waves are on a whole other level!
Pay attention to this master of One & Done surf video with commentary and dialogue. Cover the scene with video. Color the action with pointed descriptions. Contrast with different observations. Feels like a chat among friends. Fantastic coverage. Thank you.
I would be doing this anyways! May as well share 🙌
I much prefer commentary to music.
best waves i have ever seen in San Diego.
Skip for the win!! epic waves...
Wowowowowowowow!!!!! That guy Skip !! Holy @*&@* !! This is freakin amazing. Those barrels were easily comparable to pipe. Thanks for showing the whole thing , the waves got better and better.
Easily comparable to pipe? Let’s not get too excited there kid.
@@haveaday1812Beat it, Barney 🐢
La jolla shores?
@@dannynysushe’s right tho… 6 foot pipe is way heavier than this
Epically sick
This is so epic. Congratulations! Thanks for dropping it for us!!
I was there and watching these waves was incredible. Thanks for posting this footage.
Day of days... like el nino 82/83 all the sand gone in front of marine street and the shoe looking like off the wall backdoor.... Wow amazing! Aloha and thanks for filming
Thanks for putting this together. Epic!
Awesome ,San Diego has amazing surfers!
Epic! Historical! Thankful to watch! Go Tosh!
Broseph is a legendary surf photog and only has 679 subscribers. Juice this man
🙏
Thanks mate, was awesome that you caught it all and edited too! Great to see!
Thanks for making me homesick living in Arkansas now and miss the beach and waves
Great video!! Brings back memories of surfing that same spot in the late 80s and early 90s. Epic conditions!
Great video! Thanks for sharing.
Wow those are some gnarly waves
Those are some brave surfers
So glad you captured it, epic world class surf!
Nice filming, props to the brave souls catching those waves, those are levels above.
Not according to the chick who called them all morons.
excellent! Thanks for being there, I feel like I was there too just watching this. ✌️✌️✌️
That was epic. Thank you for documenting!
wow thanks for posting. that was so fun to watch!
Sick footage. Appreciate it!
That wave right there is one of the hardest and most technical waves to ride successfully in SD.
Reminds me of Puerto just colder.
lol ok
He's not lying lol. You have 2 sections of reef that closeout into each other on half of the waves (on the best days). You fall deep on the south end and you have a 20 minute circle back through the channel. The good ones feel like you're too deep but you are not. There's so much that goes into it.
These guys are great surfers that are making it look like it's doable. Black's is way easier of a wave.
Truth!
What spot is it?
THANK YOU for the great video!!!
So sick!! We are blessed, Carlsbad got some good ones too! Happy New Year, great footage and commentary 🌊
I've seen SO many days like this at Ocean Beach that LOOK good but no one can get in the right spot as it shifts and the current moves everyone.
Yeah, except bigger and more closeoutish
Damn! Firing down there!!! HB has been firing but not like that! Sick Video! Love it! 🔥🔥🔥
Oh wow. Thank you.
You did a great job capturing the culture at these local spots Jimmy, super sick video 🙏🏽
Thank you 🙌
Wow what a way to end the year!
All time day Thanks Jimmy!
Yeah Jimmy nice footage of the boys charging. I've been sick for the last 2 weeks so I'm glad to see some local footage without leaving the house. I felt like I was there.
So sick. Team effort making this video happen!! Go Jimmy 🌊
Phenomenal video, epic waves and surfing! Thank You for your passion!
Skip was killing it!!!
Skip was definitely the hero. Amazing.
that's some awesome video. Nice work.
Wow, the first few minutes are heat pounding with the break at high tide, great watch, thanks from the UK.✌️
Sick video - but needs to be renamed - 'Skip again, make that!' haha. The one where the dude went right on the left of the day was physically painful to watch! Some absolutely perfect ones in the mix- thanks for sharing dude.
I feel that pain! And also yeah, sorry for my over the top commentary haha
the commentary was excellent 🤌@@jimmicane
Aloha from hawaii! Brah these waves looks like pipline on Oahu's north shore! Thanks for posting! Mahalo!
Mahalo for sharing such over the top prime video 🤙

Crazy bombs out there. Watching your video from the west side of Oahu. Mahalo for sharing braddah. Good job!
Thanks for making this!
Amazing footage!
Gnarliest Wave in California! Hands Down
ayyyoooo zeke!!
Where were you Zeke ? I was hiking around the bluff at Mavericks. No swell today . Coming again though.
What spot is that? It's not Big Rock, is it? Horseshoe?
Ghost trees, Mavericks and it goes on and on.
Wedge much?
Super cool thanks for posting this 🤙🏽
Amazing waves, thanks for the stoke
Very cool....Fiji Pipe in San Diego!!!!🌊🌊🌊
Well done. I appreciated your narration and sounds of the neighborhood, rather than soundtrack. Outstanding footage. HNY!
A bunch of friends and randoms stopped by so it was non stop chatterbox haha
Swell is as big as _____ can handle but angle is too north. Still fun to watch…thanks JW.
Incredible to see La Jolla break like this. What a left! Thanks for sharing.
Those are breaking so close to shore, crazy to surf that, thanks for sharing
A textura do mar 🌊 eh algo que impressiona. Eh um ser com vida própria e nitidamente feliz!!!
much respect for catching this session and even more respect to the surfers making it out!
I could smell the waves all the way in Vista on Friday. Intense churn out there!
Amazing! Great video!❤
Nice work lads, some insane Horseshoe.
Sickest footy from the swell!
Someone just give Skip the keys of the city of La Jolla please
Insane sets!!
Thanks for sharing the stoke! Those waves look insane 🤙
You know it’s hectic when New York’s own pipe master is there
Thanks for sharing! These are bad a$$ !
insanity in SD. Skip was ruling that left. Nuts. Love the footage.
Good stuff. I shot for the first three hours of the day and then bailed. Seeing some of the rides you got I'm now kicking myself for not hanging around until the tide started to drop. Oh well, live and learn.
Nothing like Big Rock in SoCal when it goes off. La Jolla is one of the most beautiful places insanediego. Loved it!!
that is NOT Big Rock. Look at the street and houses It is Horseshoe reef and Hospitals reef.
Both of you are wrong, this is at Tourmaline Surfing Park straight out in front of parking lot. I don’t like blowing up spots but I felt I had to correct you guys
Yeah you got it right Law street....LOL@@bloblablah7409
I’m not saying who’s right or wrong but the house on the left with the flag is on 274 Coast Blvd. La Jolla. Just south of Cuvier park. It’s about 3 miles north of Tourmaline beach. Or less than a mile south of La Jolla cove. Just looked on Google earth.
@@yotarunner85 Nope its tourmo
The waves and weather are all that I miss from CA, but damn do I miss em.
Holy hell! Great footage.
This was my home break from 1990-1998. North swells are always shifty, the place shines on rare big southwest swells. When it walls out across the channel to the right all the way to the break named after a street, then it's really big.
We're you friends with Ron?
Or Mario?
Epic La Jolla...well played 😂🎉😂😅
What an epic day!!
Great upload
Thank you Spicoli!!
Great video, great story, this swell has been amazing!
Great!
Skip was hammering
Santa always brings the surprise swells around this time of year!
Wowza
Awesome footage 🤙🤙
that was sick .. thanks so much for filming and editing just like that
epic footage
That FedEx wave Skip got was so good. You owe Jimmy and Skip some money fedex
This! Great job.
I hope todays another rad day Haha..
I went to Cari's & OS just to watch too..
Over Loading!!!🔥
Great footage man
Dude, I passed you while you were filming looking for a place to fly my drone, just about 50 yards from you I set off to film that break. I left after a while to film the outer reef at marine street. You did a great job dude. I've shared tour video around to my friends, that was by far the best I've seen this spot go off
